I just want to thank all those who have followed the twitter discourse about
@BBCSingers
There’s clearly much more to come but to say this has been the worst day professionally in many a year. Sign the petition and

I think we need a mass gathering of voices to shout in UNISON for our friends in
#Ukraine
.
@TheBachChoir
and all my choral conductor friends and singers, we need to do this very soon with all the publicity we can muster. Yes?
Moving to have been part of
@letmusicliveuk
peaceful protest in Parliament Square for the forgotten freelance musicians. Great to have so much support from so many wonderful musicians.
So sad to hear that Sir Stephen Cleobury passed away on St Cecilia’s day. A dedicated servant to church music, tireless in his quest for excellence so cruelly taken so soon after his retirement. He will be sorely missed. RIP.
Having just collected neighbour Dorothy’s shopping list, in her 103rd year and still digging up her potatoes, she pointed out she’s now lived through the reigns of 4 monarchs:
#GeorgeV
,
#GeorgeVI
#Elizabeth2
and now
#CharlesIII
.Truly extraordinary. I think I need to sit down.
It’s really appalling and so sad for all involved. I’m at a loss in wondering why our country is seemingly prepared to wield such
#cultural
#vandalism
as we are experiencing. It’s tough everywhere but there have to be red lines and we’ve crossed them.
It’s vital we find paths which will lead everyone back to
#singing
in whatever sized groups in late June. Working with
@DCMS
and other bodies MUST happen in the coming weeks. Write to local MP and anything which will assist 40 thousand choirs to return to singing SAFELY.
Exciting. On my way to
#London
for
@TheBachChoir
first in person rehearsal tonight for
#Bach
#Inspired
project. Good luck to all other choirs and conductors in returning to singing. It’s been a long time!
What an incredible day it was. Stunning in all respects and particularly to the musicians
@wabbey
@WAbbeyChoir
& in
#Windsor
, their directors and organists for flawless singing, conducting and playing. It showed just why music is SO important. It was deeply moving. Thank you.
Well it’s the dreaded two lines! Isolation for me till the New Year. I feel ok and always sensed leading anything like a normal life would make this more likely. Happy Christmas to all Tweeters and let’s hope ‘22 will be a vast improvement on ‘21.
So sad to hear Francis Jackson has died, aged 104. What a remarkable man, musician, composer, a stunning organist and wonderful human being to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. RIP Francis.
Recovering from having had the jab. Feel a tad rough but know it’s nothing to experiencing Covid again. It’s a year, exactly, since having it & Spring is in the air once more. Can’t thank enough those who’ve worked tirelessly on protecting us. We must now protect each other.
So enjoyed being back
@stjohnscam
and to hear marvellous singing from the choir. Special to have a photo of my predecessor, Christopher Robinson, and successor
@ANethsingha
Just read that cathedral and college chapels now have 18k attending weekly for choral services. Also good to know
@BBCRadio3
CE now has 400k listening weekly. Stats from Friends of Cath Music. For once,
#goodnews
@SJCChoir
Thank so much and to everyone for their kind messages on Twitter and email about the MBE. I feel very humbled by this unexpected award and am particularly appreciative to all those who make my life as a musician such a privilege.
Have a
#Christmas
#concert
on December 12 and, assuming the venue hasn't become a polling station, I am thinking of re-arranging
#JingleBells
to
#JinglePolls
in several keys simultaneously with no resolution in the final cadence.
Looking forward to hearing
@ChoirOfKingsCam
later and humbled to have a new version of v7 ‘O come all ye faithful’ receiving its first outing. Also ‘Away in a manger’ from Noel 1 making its debut.
I’ve not tweeted in days as I’m totally devastated for all my friends in the ‘gig’ music industry. Whist I worry about my own cancellations, I’m far more concerned about the people upon whom the entire music industry relies .
#Chancellor
think about this!
There’s so much amazing organ playing around. However, I want to help integrate the fusion between skills as organist alongside choir-trainer as incumbent President of
@RCO_Updates
in 2022. The organ and choir are inextricably linked, yet, they are, in many ways, opposites!
@BBCSingers
@JWHallBaritone
@BBCRadio3
I fear this was my last appearance with the amazing
@BBCSingers
as it’s been announced they are to be made redundant prior to
@bbcproms
It feels like a bereavement. It’s truly tragic. The 5 orchestras also affected but intact. Can this really be right? 🤨☹️
Thank you so much for your support, John. Your music is a jewel in the crown of British Choral Music. We’ve all grown up singing your music, and I hope you feel part of the
@bbc
@BBCSingers
culture, because you are! x
#WeAreTheBBCSingers
What a wonderful few minutes of singing with such commitment and love and compassion for the people of Ukraine 🇺🇦. Thank you to you all, to
@TheBachChoir
for making it happen and for all who have been giving to the cause.
Thanks to all who attended

A very sad day with the passing of Richard Lloyd, past organist of Hereford and Durham Cathedrals. I was lucky to be his assistant in Durham for 2 years witnessing at first hand one of the most naturally gifted musicians I’ll ever know. Wonderful man, composer, friend. RIP.
Just been involved in
#Bach
St Matthew with
@TheBachChoir
on
#Zoom
with the fabulous
@excathedrachoir
recording propelling us along. Thanks 160 involved and my amazing daughter Susannah. Watch this space for next one. Likely to be Good Friday and
#Howells
.
It’s a sad day. I am in admiration for what you and Graham have achieved. My predecessor Christopher Robinson and I are of the view this was an excellent venture. The motto in our country seems to be ‘the problem of success is success’. Excellence is now deemed inappropriate. 🤨
SJV TO BE DISBANDED
We were devastated to hear yesterday that the college has decided to disband SJV at the end of this academic year.
We are so proud of what we have achieved and will miss singing together every Monday.
Thank you for your support
Had fun day at BP yesterday. Met some amazing people with extraordinary stories of bravery and devotion. Felt extremely humbled to be there and lovely to have my wife and two of my children enjoy it too.
#Special
You and Rob have led the group with distinction, innovation and total professionalism. You can be proud of that as
@BBCSingers
can be of their contribution to our cultural life. Thank you.
All I want to say is the greatest professional honour of my life has been the incredible seven years I’ve spent with the
@BBCSingers
. As a choir, but more importantly as individuals, they are the best. We are devastated.
You are so right Anna. My four children, two of each, have all been choristers. It’s invaluable training for life: they agree. If being part of a team is good enough for sport, so it is for singing and music generally.
The idea that choristerships are damaging to children is deeply upsetting. In the 5 months since starting the Girls’ choir, I’ve seen shy girls come out of their shell, nervous girls delight at singing solos, & distracted girls gain focus, all with a smile. An education.
So saddened by Her Majesty’s death. More emotional than I thought it would be. Then that says what a deep impact she has had on us all. Deeper than we will ever know. May she RIP.
I’m grateful to
@TheBachChoir
who are going to coordinate a choral outcry for
#Ukriane
and more information will be appearing through social media outlets as soon as possible. MARCH 13 / 3pm. Save the date. Please retweet, tell your friends families:
#SingforUkraine

Rehearsing the
@BSOrchestra
today was different. We lost a friend, amazing cellist, passionate about this great orchestra; he died suddenly and unexpectedly yesterday. The opening of
#Elgar
Enigma V was emotional for us all, particularly as it was ‘his’ piece. RIP dear Roger.
The quietness, tranquility and emergence of Spring is wonderful to behold. I have never enjoyed being in the garden more. It transcends our difficulties right now and speaks of
#calmness
and
#hope
. We need those more than ever.
I will remember for a very long time the gathering for
@TheBachChoir
last night. Friendships renewed and excitement to sing and make music together. They didn’t sound as if they had been apart for 18 months.
#thepowerofmusic
So very sad to hear Sir Andrew Davis has died. He was a very special conductor and a joy to work with - an opinion I know I share with all my
@BBCSingers
colleagues. My generation grew up with him conducting the Last night of
@bbcproms
. Here’s the year he sang the speech. Hero.
Read
@RichmoMusic
in
@thetimes
about the shocking cuts to the BBC’s musicians! Why is it those who devised these ludicrous, devastating plans didn’t draw on the minds of other experts in the industry? It’s truly shameful & then ensuring no appearance in the Proms,
#Incredulous
!
The cancellation of
@kingssingers
today in a US university is truly appalling. Apparently over ‘life style choices’. For it to happen two hours before the concert shows how disgracefully inept and insulting this decision is. TKS are a national UK treasure. Shameful: apologise!
The amazing cathedral of
#Durham
in all its glory and the magnificent organ. It’s good to be back and to play tonight at 730 in the summer series of recitals.
It’s important all manner of responses be expressed about choral singing. The article includes only some of the thoughts in full article and is not fully representative. EVERYONE must be given access to singing, not just in public schools. But let’s not penalise them for that.
It’s a sad day having heard James Bowman passed away yesterday. The ‘Grandfather’ of counter-tenors, his contribution to music in this country is incalculable. A witty raconteur, he made us laugh. His support of
@TheBachChoir
as a VP meant so much to us all. Dear James RIP.
On way home after a stimulating 2 days
@rncmlive
@RNCMconducting
with eager inquiring students. All I spoke with expressed concern and sadness about demise of
@BBCSingers
& cuts to orchestras, but most of all concern about future of Classical Music.
Back to work today with the wonderful
@BBCSingers
and I had to check the tube map on how to get to Maida Vale! Great to be joined by the amazing Thomas Trotter.
At a memorial service
@WinCathedral
and lovely to spend time with so many friends. Us 3 managed nearly 50 years between us as organist, Andy now into his 20th and the longest serving. Quite a place.
Was very lucky to meet and have dinner with the great Desmond Tutu in
#Capetown
1994 and to be in the cathedral organ loft for his daughter’s wedding. What a joyful occasion with him leading the dancing in the aisles. One of the greatest humans of our time. May he RIP.
Lovely hotel in
#Copenhagen
with an amusing list of reasons for not being disturbed. Great day with Danish Vocal Ensemble working on
@jamesmacm
Tenebrae, amongst others.
It’s all very well playing the pianos for hours (which I’m hugely enjoying) but they are now hideously out of tune and in their own unfathomable temperaments. My piano tuning skills are about as successful as the amateur hair cutting I’ve been observing.
Calls for an end to boy-only choirs from Soprano
@garrettsgossip
have been rebuffed by the director of the 142-year-old Bach Choir,
@davidhconductor
. What's your view?...

A brilliant letter in
@thetimes
Stephen. You and so many continue to be exemlpars of why music is so massively important to all young people wherever it can be experienced. Yours and mine
@WinCathedral
was special for me as organist as it was for you as chorister. Multiply that!
Grateful to
@thetimes
for this. I owe my career mainly to
@davidhconductor
giving me a choral scholarship at age 8, and
@HarryGW
for giving me a job at age 18. Five years as a professional singer as a child taught the intense work ethic you need to succeed in the music industry.
The joys of singing as all the 1st year students
@rncmlive
are showing in rehearsing

’s Mass. What a sound and lovely to see them so attentive and committed. A lesson to all music institutions of the importance of this training, no matter your instrument.
So sad to hear Richard Seal, past organist of choirmaster
@salcathchoir
passed away yesterday. A total legend of a man, a superb musician, wit, raconteur and one of the most caring people one could have known. He was the father of the
#GirlsChoir
movement. RIP dear man.

masses on the organ! Never seen church so full last night for concert. There’s a clear need for this in people’s lives.
We were there. You were missed Andrew but your brilliant training enabled everything to sound so assured. George’s conducting was exemplary on every level. It was a stunning display of technique and superlative musicianship. Get well soon and bask in the brilliance of your team!
1/3 One of the proudest days of my career: hearing superlatively talented organ scholar, George Herbert, conduct
@SJCChoir
Advent broadcast (2 days after my +ve Covid test.) Choristers sang SO well, with just 10 out of 16 well enough to sing. Gents simply outstanding as usual.
Just about to embark on a privileged task of suggesting music for those who can't attend church during

and
#Easter
. What a feast and where to begin?
#Music

to millions. It's powerful message will increase in volume the more it's required.
A special moment for a special person. Our amazing neighbour Dorothy’s 100th birthday. Party postponed, alas, but chance to wish and sing her happy birthday and see her card from the Queen. She has lived in village her whole life.
I’m totally in awe of the amazing musicians who can take anything from basic to superlative in minutes. I’m having so much fun making music with the extraordinary orchestra, the

As one attempting to work in

along with so many friends and colleagues, there are two words I'd rather not encounter once things resume, whenever that might be. They are POSTPONED and CANCELLED.
On this 2nd Sunday in Advent, just watched John Scott play ‘Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland’ JSB. A wonderfully expressive performance on YouTube reminding me how much we all miss him. His kind and gracious personality radiating through his fingers and feet. A

Just heard
@PetrocTrelawny
mention the passing of the

Just played the 49th chorale prelude in

First day with wonderful grandsons cycling around Rutland Water and teaching them how to make a fire. So special and a perfect respite from preparing scores.
Like so many others, the first proper snowfall in
#Rutland
for years. It’s cheering with tobogganing on the hills around and no traffic. Back to the fire.
Winding down before the frenzy should things start up in earnest - let’s hope. Love the North Yorkshire coast and the view from the hired cottage is fabulous: that along with a couple of pints and fish and chips in
#Whitby
. All is well.
Lovely
@BBCRadio3
live Evensong with members of
@BBCSingers
sounding as professional and committed as ever. Thank you, all, for including it and singing it with such sensitivity.
Hope dawns once more. We are all overwhelmed & humbled by the continuing support for
@BBCSingers
from across the world. Thank you all. Here’s to this international musical gem and all who sail in it, with it and encounter it. Will be a great concert this afternoon. Keep singing x
Never been here in
#Rutland
when the wisteria is looking its most lovely. The emerging colours in the garden, along with
#Bach
, are lifting the spirit.
Wonderful to see and hear. It provides a glimmer of hope in difficult times for children and music education. Bravo to all who clearly worked magic to make this happen and to the indefatigable

Ely Cathedral yesterday evening. Over 200 state school children singing Gerontius with
@GabrieliCandP
Roar and
@Paul_McCreesh
= the culture of the possible.
It’s astonishing, isn’t it? But alas, most would be unaware and ‘surprised’ at this given the lamentable state of arts education in schools. If things will ever change, it’s feeding the roots as we all know. Feeling increasingly pessimistic about this-and I’m an optimist!!!
I’m waiting for a train having taken the first auditions in nearly 2 years for
@TheBachChoir
. Delighted so many wishing to join and lovely to hear them singing after all this time. Also enjoying looking at this incredible symmetry that is KX station.
#stunning

About to play P&F
#Bach

@WinCathedral

RIP dear man.
A comment I made re.musicians becoming taxi drivers instead has been misconstrued. I doubt I could have passed ‘the knowledge’.

Today begins a
