Conductor. Father. Centrist. Passions - music, arts, educ, young. Hates class snobbery / political hypocrisy. Sticks head above parapet. Age not moderating!
You actually don't give a toss. Every morning 1000s of musicians get up at the crack of dawn and off to whichever airport to earn an honest crust to feed their families. And all you do is snatch their biggest market from them....
When people get up at the crack of dawn to prepare their family business, when people take out a mortgage to fund a new venture or risk everything on a new product or try to find a new market - we don’t sneer at them. We cheer for them and ask how we can help.
Bravo everyone - great work. 👏👏👏👏👏👏. Am I the only musician pissed off to the eyeballs? Being told after 40 years of running a music business and paying large amounts of tax, that I'm now *unviable*? From a gov that can't even use a ****ing spreadsheet?
Moving to have been part of
@letmusicliveuk
peaceful protest in Parliament Square for the forgotten freelance musicians. Great to have so much support from so many wonderful musicians.
I spend most of my life working abroad, and there is utter disbelief in the crass dismantling of the classical music industry within the UK and the decimation of cultural education.
When I meet music executives from across the world they ask how we can be more like Britain?
The
@BRITs
show why.
Congratulations to all the
@BRITs
award winners & nominees. A great way to celebrate our thriving music industry.
If I read one more well-intentioned (or smug?) tweet about theatres/orchestras needing simply to monetise the 'great opportunities' of going 'on line'.😡😡😡. So much of the joy of music, theatre, opera is the proximity, the physical, the social interaction of live experience....
I'm frankly struggling after a year of this. The relationship between conductor and musicians is always skewed, of course, but the truth is I love musicians. Even the grumpy, stroppy ones, and the ones who drive me crazy. I've chosen to live my life with them. I miss them 😭
Delayed Christmas lunch, til 1800 to accommodate paramedic son and his partner on early shift. Still small price to pay. Raise a glass to all those brilliant NHS workers keeping the show on the road! 🍷👍

As I've been saying like a stuck record. Diversity is not putting people of colour on the professional stage, for 'visibility', if they've been to the same old posh schools as everyone else. It starts by teaching every kid in the land. But it takes 20 years.
If you want classical music to be a more diverse professional environment, it needs to be taught from a young age in diverse communities. Without rigorous training and immersion, there is little chance of attaining a professional level.
❤️😢 The last performance of maestro Claudio Abbado recorded on film happened to be this one, in 2013 at his very dear
@LucerneFestival
. Take a moment to watch him conduct Beethoven's 3rd Symphony. ❤️😢
It's been a tough few months
@GabrieliCandP
but the great day has arrived, and we're about to give 250 fantastic kids from all over UK a summer course in the company of this beautiful and challenging music. Can't wait to meet them all!

On my way to London. Can't sit back and do nothing. Let's all keep fighting for the country's soul. 🇬🇧🇪🇺🇬🇧🇪🇺🇬🇧🇪🇺🇬🇧🇪🇺🇬🇧🇪🇺🇬🇧🇪🇺🇬🇧🇪🇺🇬🇧🇪🇺🇬🇧🇪🇺🇬🇧🇪🇺🇬🇧🇪🇺🇬🇧🇪🇺🇬🇧🇪🇺🇬🇧🇪🇺🇬🇧🇪🇺🇬🇧🇪🇺🇬🇧🇪🇺
Hard week ahead. Major problems looming, with high chances of major cancellations, yet again. I'd find it easier if 1) every bloody paper didn't assume travel restrictions only impact holidays, and 2) after two years of little income, gov stopped talking about "a great Christmas"
Yes...thanks to
@pritipatel
, this petty, hideous, thinly-disguised racist agenda is likely to screw up NHS and businesses galore here and will absolutely kill the arts/music touring business. Hard to know whether you're just too blinded to see it, or just don't care.
As ever, no acknowledgment of the rights you have stripped your own citizens of by removing our right to freely move within the EU in work and retirement.
I agree with many of Martyn's comments, but isn't 'diversity' in classical music largely a subsect of 'class/access' issues. And the only real long-term solution, a massive uplift in high quality classroom-based music teaching in every state school?
Can I put in a vote for more matinee concerts ? 5pm start , 7.30 supper, 9.00 leave for hotel . 10.30 arr for beer before bar shuts , phone wife and still time to read before bed 😁
Been jabbed. Have to say NHS really efficient. No queues, well spaced out. Felt safe. Fingers crossed I'll avoid side effects, but so glad to be moving forward ! Bravo scientists and NHS ! 💉💉👍👍
Like a child at Christmas I woke early! Off to wonderful
@Ely_Cathedral
. The choir sounded fab yesterday, and I'm so looking forward to
@GabrieliCandP
ROAR Haydn Creation!
Except you're wrong, sadly. Wonderful though I'm sure these young musicians are, music is only safe when culture is embedded as an essential part of everyone's education. A few talented young players is abs not enough ...
This fantastic performance of Mahler 3
@southbankcentre
by the hugely talented
@RoyalAcadMusic
young musicians under Bychkov's inspired baton restored some much needed faith in humanity. The future of music, at least, in this country is in safe hands!
So happy to be touring Spain after more than two years.
@GabrieliCandP
brilliant in Bach last night, even after 5am start and very tough travel. Then something happened with my plans for a light supper ...
@willquince
The whole of the EU has started a major ventilator drive and will relocate resources to each member state as their situation peaks. They have generously decided to count the UK as a member state for this project despite our 'do-nothing' policy.
Lovely conversation with 14 year old lad on our course. 'I just love singing all sorts of music. I also do theatre. I'm also learning how to do backstage work. Not sure exactly what I will end up doing, but I just know this is where I want to spend my life...'
Still emotional after Gerontius. I wonder what Elgar would think of ROAR? Even as a knighted composer, he seems to have been crippled by inferiority, largely from the rigid class structures of his day. Sadly they still exist in the arts. We are abs determined to change this.
Hugely emotional end to a vast project. Gerontius in the can! Thanks to everyone,
@nickythespence
@StephanyMezzo
@Foster_Williams
@GabrieliCandP
and great young singers from ROAR and Polish National Youth Choir. I'll never forget these last ten days. Wrecked but happy !
Rather honoured to be opening the year long Heinrich Schutz anniversary festival with

in the magnificent Frauenkirche Dresden.

Just been to
@ChoirOfKingsCam
nine lessons - my first time. Absolutely beautiful singing and organ playing under
@danielhydeorgan
🥲. Thanks for the invitation - a wonderful start to Christmas.
I want to be part of a country that is warm, generous, magnanimous, kind, and above all compassionate towards the tragedy of Ukraine. All I see is pettiness, deviousness, grandstanding, and tawdriness. I feel shame. How can we change this? This world-beating crappiness?
Abs agree, and proven in so many studies worldwide...which is why every child in the land should be a chorister, in having access to music and singing in all schools.
Being a chorister boosts confidence and teaches independence, dedication and organisation. A chorister learns both how to lead and how to work effectively in a team; skills that serve them well whatever path they choose to follow in the future.
A lovely festival of amateur choirs in the vast and magnificent Granada cathedral. Hundreds of singers, spaced and with masks. Such a pity UK choirs are still silenced ....
@Howard_Goodall
It's extraordinary how the BBC seem to take us for utter fools. Since when has lying, from politicians or a major organisation, become acceptable?
Last chance to help our

I'm not sure, but it might prove that those in the building world, running businesses, realise there's no such thing as a free lunch ?
Happy Christmas to all my followers! Don't forget tomorrow afternoon is a

That was a great one. What I really love about choirs is the passing on of skills. A young man coming back to help support his school choir as 'staff'; another senior singer deputed to help a younger lad who needs to focus. Let's start teaching from within.
#findingyourtribe
We don't need a roadmap
@OliverDowden
. We need some fuel in the tank. You can't pay salaries with think tanks. Neither can artists and support teams pay mortgages or feed their children with your 'understanding'.
I understand the deep anxiety of those working in music & the desire to see fixed dates for reopening
I am pushing hard for these dates & to give you a clear roadmap back
These involve v difficult decisions about the future of social distancing, which we know has saved lives
I too hate the phrase 'low-skilled'. I think especially of my father's carers. Low paid, but highly skilled at dealing with old people and so compassionate. I couldn't do their job. These people really contribute to society. (And is
@patel4witham
really highly-skilled?)
Tory immigration policy is offensive in principle - it labels vital workers, making a big contribution as ‘low skilled’ & slams the door in their faces. And it is disastrous in practice - it will badly damage our economy. We must get powers to create policy for our needs & values
congratulations..you've effectively closed the doors and prevented millions of people, esp the young, from working hassle free in 27 countries. A quite magnificent achievement. I'm sure they will all share your delight.
After many years of campaigning, I am delighted the Immigration Bill which will end free movement on 31st December has today passed through Parliament.
We are delivering on the will of the British people.
Shameless plug, but, thinking wistfully, it would be marvellous if a few of my 6000+ followers might want to subscribe to this. Wonderful, uplifting Bach, perfect for Christmas, and, small thing, it helps keep musicians alive! . Perfect with glass of port!
You're just way out of your depth, yet again, but you don't want to see the truth anyway. Touring mega bands at huge profits is not at risk. It's the daily hops from country to country for orchs choirs and small bands, which employ 1000s, which are threatened....
Guardian headline: “No-deal Brexit may make touring Europe 'unviable' for UK artists.”
This is why we never get any US bands or singers touring around the EU and performing in huge stadiums. Not a single one.
Oh.
Today's a happy day. After weeks of editing, sound files and booklet sent off to factory for
@GabrieliCandP
An English Coronation! A huge project of nearly three hours music. Over 1000 people on some tracks! All the English greats. Issue late spring

Winged Lion.
Boris Johnson has served our country and his constituency with distinction. He led world in supporting Ukraine, got Brexit done, and was our most electorally successful Prime Minister since Margaret Thatcher. Boris is a political titan whose legacy will stand the test of time.
Absolutely this, as I've been saying like a stuck record. It is a potentially thriving industry, it helps creative thinking, it makes souls sing and keeps minds healthy BUT in the end we should support culture because it's the most glorious celebration of our humanity.
"We must stand up for classical music on its own terms and vouch for it without limply falling back on the utilitarian argument that it makes a contribution to GDP. If we don’t, it will be game over... and soon. The time to stop apologising is now."

🔥again today
It’s
#December1st
and we’ve put up our Christmas tree!
As a British Muslim, I may not celebrate Christmas but I LOVE the spirit and sparkle of it!
Both me and my A+E consultant sister will be working in the

over Christmas so those who do celebrate can have the time off 😊
Another great cathedral, another sea of red. Huge thanks to the dozens of partners, teachers, foundations, donors and Gabrieli musicians and management who made ROAR Praetorius happen. We'll be creating many more opportunities for all these youngsters going forward!
Not so often do conductors meet, but a most enjoyable time talking to Leonard Slatkin after concerts last weekend
@palaumusicavlc
. Great music, food, wine and company in Valencia!
Three years to the day, and still one of the most thrilling evenings in my musical life.

This sort of headline drives me crazy. Some of us have to travel to WORK - it's not all beaches and lager. 10 day quarantine for work is ridiculous. If sportsmen are exempt, why not musicians?
What a great evening. Wonderful singing from the massed ROAR choirs and lovely playing from
@GabrieliCandP
. And big thanks to soloists
@LaTynan
@AJRStaples
@AshleyRiches
for supporting the project ensuring our youngsters (and audience) hear world class singing!
Sad day yesterday for my family. We
lost Susan's mother, Maureen. 90 years old. wife of 67 years, great mother and grandmother. Never had cause to say a cross word or crack a single mother in law joke. Truly ! RIP
If you're feeling all 👑coronationy 👑 this weekend, I will shamelessly promote this recording !! It's huge fun and seriously largescale. Only 22 trumpets and almost 300 singers !
Great to meet
@RobBBCS
and
@PeteDavTenor
to talk about the importance of singing, education... and a solidarity beer or two in the face of threat to the wonderful
@BBCSingers
. Let's all continue the fight ...
But don't worry, because all those folks who told us we were idiot 'remoaners' talking Britain down when we predicted all this, will be apologising profusely. As for the poor, they will indeed pay the price, as usual. Sickening.
Yesterday, hundreds of musicians gathered outside Parliament in London to play music and say ‘Let Music Live’, in a plea to support artists during the pandemic and find ways to allow the safe return of live music across the country.

Achieved is the glorious work. I guess I shouldn't moan that most of my life has been spent in 5* hotels with poncey breakfast buffets, but a Gregg's bacon roll/cob/butty is truly one of the marvels of Creation. And now off to another marvel - Durham cathedral!
Such a joyful morning in Melsonby school. All kids sing, and half play in the brass band. 4 year olds in the choir singing so well! Why doesn't every school do this ? It's so uplifting. Bravo to all!
Please, from the bottom of my heart, support us if you possibly can. We change lives and are doing everything we can to help ensure the future of this great art. Thank you ! ❤️
In 24hrs we will launch our
@BigGive
Christmas campaign.
Our work is driven by the passion & determination of young people, who want to sing challenging works & lead the way in youth choral singing.
Please support us so we can work with the next generation of young singers🙏
Abs this. We should teach music and culture because it's a fantastic expression of humanity, feeds hearts and souls and brightens life. Other benefits are fabulous, but that's not the point.
I mean, great and all that, but it's not about well-being, mental health (most musicians I know are slightly nuts) or supporting other modes of thinking.
Music is a fundamental human expression, requiring education to enable competency. We are illiterate without it.
It's been a massive challenge to make this happen, over years now, but after a thrilling first day I'm so glad we did. Huge thanks to every artist, management and supporters who've made the Dream a reality ❤️
The full forces for the
@GabrieliCandP
recording of Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius in rehearsal yesterday at Fairfield Halls. I’m up there someone in the tenors… 😂
So, an amazing 5000 followers!! Great to talk about the joy of music. Important to fight hard for education and young people, and for other passions, even if there's often too much politics. And if there's sometimes anger, believe me, it comes from love. I want a better world.
Happy New Year to all my followers and
@GabrieliCandP
supporters. Tonight 'Bach for Christmas' continues on 'Live from London' at 1900. Programme 4 with Cantata 4 featuring those beautiful horns, and a wonderful echo aria with

Reflecting on Friday's concert
@GabrieliCandP
in Lucerne: first time B minor mass with real baroque trumpets with no holes. Undoubtedly the harder way, but magnificent work from the virtuoso Jean-François Madeuf and team, recreating the skills of Bach's great trumpeters.
Just let that sink in. One of the world's greatest oboists, prob silenced for 3 months. Music lovers need be aware of the extent of this. The odd streamed recital, however lovely, cannot hide that this year has been abs catastrophic for musicians, with little hope on horizon.
That’s me musically silent until Christmas, or end of January. Took the Rolls for a drive tonight, felt good, sometimes playing the oboe just feels GREAT. So grateful to
@BBCRadio3
and my extremely wonderful colleagues tonight. Listen back for a month.
Absolutely delighted to have won this, but huge congratulations to all our colleagues and friends who have made so many fabulous recordings this year .
I am listening to Praetorius' Christmas Mass performed by
@GabrieliCandP
and
@Paul_McCreesh
. Unbelievably powerful and uplifting. I used to sell this CD in Blackwells Music Shop, Oxford in 1996 and it never loses its impact. One of the greatest CD's ever recorded. Untoppable.
Aged 10 years in last half hour. Held at passport control for having "avoided quarantine" in Poland. I took the test on arrival but the test co had not entered it into the polish immigration system as required. I had print out, but frantic phonecalls. Last on flight..
These photos always choke. How could man have ever descended to this ? And, worse, the feeling that the danger is still with us, and we need reminding.
@kerilynnwilson
@RoyalOperaHouse
Toi Toi Toi, Maestro! I'm in the middle of a crazy week preparing Elgar's sublime oratorio Gerontius and working with over 200 amazing kids. My routine will start slightly differently...please don't judge me 😂
We've sadly lost and had to change a couple of players
@GabrieliCandP
- Covid tests/travel restrictions - but I can't remember looking forward to a show so much. Tomorrow
@3choirs
King Arthur Purcell. Abs our most loved rep and (dare I say) one of the pieces we do best!
Abs 1000%. Not just the singing of four fab colleagues, but staggering bugle and trumpet playing. I don't think I've ever heard the last post played with such unanimous tuning and phrasing...
eight military brass players and a bagpiper performing absolutely at the top of their game, having been forced into near silence for over a year? Too often these activities are sidelined as being either marginal or elitist yet, when the circumstances demand, U.K. artists step up
We were delighted to welcome
@NickGibbUK
to Ely. The other Nick
@ndanielmusic
is introducing Edward, our youngest Roar singer, who has just started playing the oboe, to the wonderful Goossens Lorée oboe! This is what c21 musicmaking can look like! Let's change the narrative !

I found this a very disappointing article. The 'unfairness' of those who spend best part of half a million on private education being 'discriminated' against. And the implication that privately educated kids are the only ones bright enough to preserve the excellence of Oxbridge.
I have to say this makes me pretty incandescent. Now have to pay £300 plus to test, and endure 10 days quarantine at home after working. While football always seems exempt from obeying rules. 😠
