been thinking about it and folks seeking fame should stop at carly rae jepsen level. perfect fame. great concerts. loving fans. don't know anything about her personal life. no notes.
at some point in the pandemic i went viral for noting that the Spanish Flu was not really mentioned in most art and writing afterward and people yelled at me
Welcome to the weird era I’ve been warning about since the pandemic started with scripts, where everything is either bizarrely set in 2019 for no reason, or the year is never mentioned.
these kids have been doing school shooting drills since they were in elementary school and now we have this language directed at them from elected officials.

, I interviewed people who've been on the flip-side of "therapy speak" — ghosted, bailed on, friend-dumped — and spoke to experts to see how we can avoid hurting others in the name of self-care. Give a read!
When I was 29 I wrote an essay for The Cut about aging and beauty. After a few rounds of edits, my editor killed it because I was just too young for it to really work. Super grateful she did. Some young thoughts are best left in your diary.
This is what veteran journalists told everyone in digital media 10 years ago (build a brand on Twitter! work for free! learn to cut video!) and you'll never guess what happened next
No. What it comes down to is, if you wanna make it/survive, you have to make yourself indispensable. You have to be able to do 100 things. Can't just be a writer. Have to be a podcaster, a Tik Toker, a blogger. It's just reality. It sucks. It's grinding. It blows. But it's true.
WNYC: "Mr. Mayor, what evidence did you have that outside agitators were involved in the Columbia protests?"
Eric Adams: "Well, first I had a gut reaction..."
A major tenet of the Jewish religion is that Jews are invited to question everything. This law intended to curb antisemitism is actually specifically anti-Jewish.
Unlike previous house resolutions on “antisemitism” this one appears to have teeth: equating anti-Zionism w antisemitism, this bill wld threaten any school that recognizes Jewish V for Peace or SJP, or assigns anti-Zionist texts, w losing federal funding
i'm pretty confident it's going to be mostly ignored in most film/tv/writing going forward or just briefly mentioned as if it weren't a generation-defining event
Lots of news articles wondering why people in their 30s are dying of preventable cancer, wonder if it's because it's now absolutely impossible to see a doctor even if you have decent health insurance.
When I was a 22-year-old intern at an NYC magazine, a FT staffer there took me out to lunch, told me she was quitting journalism, and suggested I rethink my career path. I think about her a lot.
Sometimes I remember that I lost my own job (at a profitable publication!) a few years ago because the billionaire owner thought it was annoying that his reporters wanted to make more than $45K annually and he decided to shut us down out of spite.
The "singles tax" is absolutely a real thing and it's tough to be a one-income home when your friends are partnered and sharing $$. but I also gotta know why these people are spending SO MUCH MONEY on rent.
Something I've been thinking about a lot is that in 1991, Stu and Didi Pickles owned a home in the Los Angeles suburbs on a teacher's and a failed toy inventor's salary
i am corrected, my tweet was about understanding why ppl didn't want to make art about the 1918 flu and not wanting to watch or read any content set in the deep pandemic...which i still mean tbh! evermore is Taylor's best album tho
this is beside the point but i would not mock people living with their parents if i were mayor of a city in the midst of a historic affordable housing crisis
"Actually, it was not controversial," said
@NYCMayor
of the "We ❤️ NYC" controversy. Rather, the critiques came from "a few people who were home in their mommy and daddy's basement on Twitter"
I should probably make it clear that I'm in an age gap relationship (my boyfriend is 1 year and four months younger than me and keeps asking what the Cold War was like)
people really losing it over the greta gerwig barbie snub when we should actually be mad that Lady Bird lost to the movie about the lady who fell in love with a fish
A recent grad DMed me the other day and asked for advice re: getting into media, and honestly, I have none. We need journalists, but I have no idea how to make that career sustainable for anyone.
In 1973, Rolling Stone offered the main character in Almost Famous $1K to write 3,000 words...which is about the same as you'd be offered now, except then it was equal to about $7k
so if you live in a rent-stabilized apartment, landlords can go back to never fixing anything/terrorizing you until you move out and they can jack up the rent. swell.
Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie confirms that bringing back IAIs to permit landlords to raise rents on stabilized apartments after improvements is on the table in budget talks. I reported that some rollbacks to the 2019 rent laws were brought up in talks
fwiw nothing wrong with being young and writing things! just sucks when you write something embarrassing in your 20s and are stuck with it for years. take it from me, a former 20-something blogger!!!!
Absolutely disgusted by how Jim Spanfeller has treated every G/O Media property. Writing for Jezebel was a dream come true, and losing the site is gutting. Solidarity with all the workers, and F to this herb.
Eric Adams: "That's what I love about New York. You wake up every day and a new small business could open or the magic crystals underneath us could get angry and shake the whole city"

, I spoke to some folks about their so-called "fake email jobs," — some are great, some are soul-sucking, and some are just jobs! A rich tapestry.
@rhiannonlucyc
well yes i also said that i didn't *want* to relive it in art (and i still don't particularly, certainly can't fault anyone who does though)
After a few of my friends were diagnosed w/cancer this year, I sched'd an appt 3 months in advance w/my doctor to get a comprehensive blood panel because I haven't had one since ~2009~, doctor's office canceled on methe day before b/c my basic metabolic panel was fine. OK then!
Scott just accused Sanders, who is Jewish, of "speaking with a forked tongue" in calling for a commitment not just to fight anti-Semitism but all forms of hatred.
@EdwardEricsonJr
I’m loath to put all the blame on the renters because housing costs across the country are out of control right now, but also…$3100/month in Philly??? There have to be better options
Olive Keogh: Quiet quitters are hard to handle because they continue to complete their assigned workload to the same (often high) standard, giving their managers an uneasy feeling but nothing specific to complain about.
I cannot stress enough that there is also no affordable housing anywhere. The mid-level markets are now expensive because people are leaving cities like New York and California and driving up housing costs in places that don't have the infrastructure to handle the influx!
Convinced the whole "you can find affordable housing in a place to which you have no connection, in which you have no family or job, and which doesn't have things you like to do" discourse just comes from people who never do anything or speak to their own families.
I gave it grief when the C train failed me, but
@NYCTSubway
has been an invaluable resource for providing real time updates on service issues. This is a major loss.
For the MTA, Twitter is no longer reliable for providing the consistent updates riders expect.
So as of today, we’re saying goodbye to it for service alerts and information.
But we're not saying goodbye to you, our customers! There are lots of ways to get real-time updates. ⬇️
I’ve seen a lot of unhinged tweets in my time but people absolutely falling over themselves to say paying thousands of dollars for *preventative care* is good, actually…like do you all work for Aetna or something
@1followernodad
saw all the tweets that were like "wnba pays less than an entry level journalism salary" excuse me where were those jobs when i was a local journalist making $30k
Been a million years since I set foot in Murray Hill, but it's funny to imagine tourists following around 22-year-old Goldman Sachs interns to get a feel of "real New York"
This person on a FB group for NYC tourists suggests that they follow us (discreetly) around Murray Hill, a quaint little area, paying attention to our dogs and seeing where we go to get our coffee
Ok I cannot stop thinking about the '90s American Girl dolls because I am a broken woman, but as a fellow former 9-year-old in 1999 I feel like these dolls belong in 1994
look i understand that this is an unpopular opinion but morning sunlight is scientifically the key to fighting depression and permanent DST is going to fuck that up
i have seen many tweets referring to taylor swift as an elder millennial, and as we are the exact same age, i feel compelled to point out that she is actually a middle millennial, or a recessionist millennial, as some of us are called. anyway, carry on!
I knew the Trump indictment would be funny, but I didn't realize it would be "big box labeled SECRETS tipped over in the Mar a Lago ballroom and spilled documents everywhere" funny
Former Israeli PM Olmert: Israel now faces choice between ceasefire as part of deal that may bring home hostages alive, and a cease-fire with no deal, no hostages, no apparent achievement, with a total loss of the remnants of international public support
I have watched every interview with every expert sub diver (James Cameron included) today and it seems like everyone in the community has been talking about how dangerous OceanGate's submersibles are for years.
Most people don't really know anything about IVF. This morning, on a trip for our tenth wedding anniversary, while
