I'm pretty far left, but every time someone makes the argument that substance users in the subway have no impact on the people around them (except an "aesthetic" one, sorry) I get nudged a tiny bit toward the right
If you want to make a compelling argument for getting drug users off of public transit, make one that centers the interests and priorities of the users, who are the only "victims" of their activities. Stop focusing on the aesthetic preferences of other riders.
HOLY SHIT an actual ADA COMPLIANCE DEMAND LETTER from the U.S. Attorney’s Office
I have been wondering who would have standing to sue the cops for parking on the sidewalk but the SDNY definitely does lolllll
Just in: The feds are threatening to sue NYC if city vehicles do not stop parking on sidewalks and crosswalks in ways that "impede the access of people with disabilities to pedestrian pathways," if you want to talk about an actual ADA lawsuit.
PDF letter:
This is just …crime. This person is a criminal! They installed a product that conceals one character of their license plate and blocks photography from above and both sides.
Am I understanding this correctly?
- company proposes tidy 12-story contextualized project they can build as of right
- NIMBYs revolt
- company: ok, guess we'll build this space shard* instead, since we can build that as of right too
* I like it fine
This is the home of Betsy DeVos, one of the Michigan women leading the vandals who are destroying American public education.
Can we acknowledge that maybe economic circumstances play a role in radicalizing people?
My point isn’t that you should *have* to walk into MetLife Stadium. It’s that you should be *able* to. Hotels on two sides are less than 500 yards from the sports complex property and there’s enough consistent demand to walk there that lawyers made this one put up this sign!
This is insane. This NYPD officer could easily have killed him. I’m a motorcycle rider who rides in the city every week and I’m pretty nimble and even I’m not sure I have the skills to stay alive if a cop tries to mash me into a jersey barrier at speed. What are we doing?
It’s hard to imagine this happening in almost any other country. I’m here googling for a stadium anywhere in Europe or Australia that is surrounded by a sea of parking and hard to walk into and so far I haven’t found one. Lotta dumb Americans though!
Ghost car (Dodge Charger apparently), no plates, no registration, blacked out windows, parked in front of the literal fire hydrant that will save me from a fire in my apartment.
Do I call 911, which is the correct procedure, or do I do nothing?
The Chief of Patrol is using his public position to run essentially a fascist propaganda operation, not just free of consequences but with Adams’ approval. It’s not an exaggeration to say the NYPD is effectively no longer under civilian control, which is extremely dangerous.
Port Authority: we support bicycling as part of the regionwide multimobility sustainable bla bla bla
Also Port Authority: if you dare to bring your bicycle to our busiest passenger facility we will take you directly to prison
Regarding the lawyer who got arrested for touching a license plate that a criminal had concealed so they could keep doing crimes: I don’t think people outside NYC (or many in it) understand how proudly corrupt and ungovernable and self-serving the contemporary NYPD has become
(1) lol
(2) if your business can’t figure out how to afford a $15 fee on a $6,000+ revenue job, you are incompetent; maybe consider raising your price to $6,015?
Having a lot of parking near MetLife and American Dream is understandable (I realize it’s in the Meadowlands and most people will drive). But it’s in the interest of all parties to make local circulation on foot within the complex *possible*.
Lol for those saying some version of “who needs a sidewalk there, nobody walks half a mile” — that’s less than the distance from the Empire State Building to Grand Central, plenty of us in NYC (whose putative home teams play in that stadium) walk further every single day
It's not just an "aesthetic preference" to want public spaces that are free of people using drugs, causing disruption, or visibly suffering without social support, and saying that is not equivalent to saying that people like that should be "disappeared" from society
I am playing co-host this week to two visiting teenagers, a boy and a girl, extended family from a sheltered background in the exurbs of a small Midwestern city, and let me tell you, NYC’s still got it, and it’s so much fun to watch them fall in love with the city
Hey
@nytimes
— this is a car crash in which a van driver killed a child on a bike, and what’s more, the child was riding a bike that was speed-limited to 20mph — unlike an ordinary bike, which can go much faster
I’m in a FB group for UK tourists to NYC and EVERY WEEK it’s the same:
Q: Which parts of Manhattan are safe?
A: All of them
Q: Is (hotel surrounded by $3M apts) in a safe location?
A: Yes duh
Q: Is it safe to walk from MSG to GCT at 10pm?
A: Lol what is WRONG with you
You are a random person in Ohio contemplating a summer trip to NYC. You see on Google somewhere there are *literal military troops* in the subway system. You genuinely wonder if it's save to even try to visit. This is the stuff doom loops are made of.
Well, would you look at that. They got 6 bus lane violations in two months, with escalating fines, and then they just… hid their plate. Problem solved! (There’s one in judgment from 4 months ago.)
The only reason this car isn’t immediately swarmed by officers, inspected, and then removed for public safety — like NYPD did when I called in a plateless car in Boerum Hill in 2010 - is that this corruption is now near-universal within the NYPD and they all do it themselves
@CAD5000
Cameras save lives, they’re the least discriminatory type of safety enforcement, and the program generates a tiny amount of revenue, you’ve been reading too much New York Post
This truck is
1) way bigger than needed to deliver donuts and paper cups
2) illegal on all NYC streets at all times
3) utterly absurd to take down a street like this
How did it even get here? Every possible turn onto 13th east of here (3rd Av) is hard or impossible for a truck.
This guy: *starts to turn into the 11th Av bike lane*
Me, loudly, trying to physically block with my motorcycle: Get the fuck out of there!
Him: *ignores me, zooms ahead*
Cop waiting on the corner: Oh no you fucking don’t*
*not verbatim
I know that when I’m preparing to do violent crime in the subway, I always pick the big station with the football jocks with machine guns that hasn’t had any violent crime but that everyone on Long Island has heard of, and I stop at the table so the nice boy can take my gun away
I’m sure this law abiding citizen has a perfectly good reason for a

Hey
@NYPDTransit
: stop parking BEHIND THE SAFETY BARRIER in the Columbus Circle bike infrastructure like it’s the Employee of the Month space. We’re not going to stop until this ends.
you: congestion pricing is good in so many ways, bring it on
this superior intellect: lol you dork, you only support this because you don’t want to get run over and killed
I went to a bar I go to 4x/month and the bar seats were full and after about 5 min the host came up and offered me the big back booth and he asked for my drink order and as I opened my mouth to say “rye Manhattan” the bartender reached around him and handed me one
@nick10bk
@richmintz
it's still a nightmare though. yesterday's show ended at about 11:30 and by 1:30 the line for shuttles was still massive. it probably didn't clear up until like 2:30 a.m. or later
So based on the replies (which are not pretty):
- they are now stuffing “recommended content” (Elon worship, GOP racists, etc.) into your algorithmic feed whether you want it or not
- you cannot opt out
- your only alternative is to choose the chronological timeline
We want to ensure everyone on Twitter sees the best content on the platform, so we’re expanding recommendations to all users, including those who may not have seen them in the past.
You can learn more about them, and how to best control your experience:
To state this plainly: one person has had ten thousand 311 requests fraudulently closed by the NYPD — ten thousand prosecutable crimes by city employees
I think this is the most non-divisive and solutions-oriented way I’ve *ever* seen an elected official explicitly discuss the problem of cultural displacement due to rising rents
This Swann Street situation is an absolute disaster for
@MayorBowser
and for
@DCPoliceDept
. A catastrophe, in a week of catastrophes. Peaceful demonstrators bottled up in an alley, given refuge by homeowners, who are now being menaced by police. A standoff for no reason.
@richmintz
So start giving away all of your money lol. If you want the world to be more equitable it just means redistributing money to the poors. Start with yourself you hypocrite.
I’ll probably be cancelled but why does everyone think that THEIR dog is the ONE dog that’s fine to bring into a food business? Did they all buy placards from the FDNY union?
I could personally show you vehicles belonging to 50 members of your force parked illegally outside your precincts RIGHT NOW with illegal tint that have never, ever, ever been questioned
Every word that comes out of this man’s mouth is an embarrassment to law and order
Excessive tint is a violation of the vehicle traffic law. When officers stop a vehicle with this type of violation, as the video of the incident involving Council member Salaam shows, it creates a safety hazard by obstructing the new inside the vehicle. 1 of 2
I obviously agree with the poster that the needs of drug-using or emotionally disturbed people on the subway should be centered in our response to them (I chair a leftist CB committee on homelessness!). But it is not cruel or selfish for other people to *expect* a response.
Imagine you’re such a butterfly that if you’re obligated to behave civilly in some of the most basic ways that apply to everyone else in the world you have a panic attack
Imagine you're a Cop in the NYPD, and you strap on your boots, gun belt, and Body Worn camera and go out to fight crime and restore order and public safety. You check your mailbox and get your newest civilian complaint, lawsuit, and now parking ticket.
@NYPDnews
@RetiredNYFinest
This guy has $16,000 in fines *in judgment* and parks on the street in front of his house and still gets a couple tickets a week and …nothing happens
This is objectively dysfunctional governance
Fire truck trapped, blasting the siren and leaning on the monster horn, because this asshole just parked in the middle of the street and walked away (even when the cars ahead clear, the truck won’t be able to pass)
Gonna maybe get cancelled and say this is Good Actually. Mopeds that are unregistered, uninsured or ridden by unlicensed riders are dangerous, there is no recourse against near-universal recklessness, mopeds in a bike lane are illegal, and none of these laws are new or obscure.
You can park a van full of explosives with no license plates in the bus stop next to Grand Central for hours and the cops won’t even look at it, but God forbid you walk downstairs with a nail file in your fanny pack
What happens if New Yorkers do not want their bags checked by the national Guard?
“Then go home,”
@GovKathyHochul
says on
@fox5ny
“You’re not taking the subway.”
The snowflake nonsense in here is absolutely wild. A morale crisis because they have to … behave like everybody else and register their cars and not steal from the Port Authority!
lol imagine mocking universal Pre-K, which has probably had more positive impact on more New York City families than any single new investment the city has made in the entire 17 years I've been here
Eric Adams only has one example, and it’s always the police. He’s only got one thing in his book of solutions and it is giving the NYPD more money, instead of eg funding pre-k, which actually helps people.
This statement is propaganda. It’s false. Nothing’s happened to NYPD precinct budgets. THAT’S THE PROBLEM.
What’s happened is six months of petulant blue flu: officers dodging and avoiding their jobs, to punish NYers for objecting to street beatings and riots by officers.
This aspect of NYPD policy is mystifying. I also tried to file a theft report by walking into the precinct, but they wouldn’t; I had to go back to the place the theft occurred and wait for them, so they could write on their clipboard standing on the sidewalk instead of inside.
After waiting for 40 minutes I called 311, hoping to file a report by going to a precinct. Was told they needed to come to me.
Walked to where the AirTag was, found my backpack in a gas station trash can. The laptop, my notebook, first aid kit, chargers, etc were gone.
What a fucking asshole
Imagine talking in this smug tone (and mocking constitutional rights yet!) as a leader of any other city department and not expecting to be fired immediately
Hi Talia! - just so you know, it’s illegal to block the street, which is why cops are making sure it’s clear of pedestrians. We have these wonderful places called “sidewalks” where believe it or not, you can walk safely and even protest if you want. Amazing !
I had 2 hours to kill before a Metro-North train so I decided to sit in the renovated GCT dining concourse and have some lunch and …they took out 90% of the chairs so I am now standing up for 2 hours leaning on a wall
A large part of our police force are basically a criminal gang at this point, extracting wealth from the city budget and casually stealing privileges from the public at large and largely hostile to the social responsibility inherent in the job
Please enjoy my FOUR THOUSANDTH report to the Taxi & Limousine Commission
These reports have generated upwards of $200,000 in municipal revenue (and $0 for me), and I do know they impact behavior (I have personally seen drivers notice my camera and stop at the line)
The driver Y203031C blocked the crosswalk or stopped past the line near 22 E 39th St on June 10 and has been reported to

If you can find me one employee who works in the New York Post headquarters or the City Hall office of a city councilmember opposed to this who hasn’t “jaywalked” in the past seven days I will pay you fifty thousand dollars
Port Authority: we support bicycling as part of the regionwide multimobility sustainable bla bla bla
Also Port Authority: if you dare to bring your bicycle to our busiest passenger facility we will take you directly to prison
The daily drumbeat in the UK/Ireland NYC Tourists FB group: person asks “is the subway safe? I heard I’ll get stabbed” and 40 people reply “actually we were visiting from Twatfield and a lad wearing a ‘fuck you and your mom’ hoodie helped my gran down the stairs at Times Square”
It's always funny that some people think the New York City subway is some kind of hellscape, whereas in reality yesterday the older man next to me politely asked for help in correcting the time settings of his Apple Watch.
This guy lived in his house in a deserted neighborhood for TEN YEARS after all the other houses nearby were demolished pending development, and declined a house swap with a $500,000 move-out bonus. Idk but seems like some of this is on him
I probably would have died at 0:24 when the guy had to jerk to the right to avoid being hit. I don’t think I could have reacted fast enough there.
A traffic violation is not a capital offense. Evading an officer trying to stop you is not a capital offense.
Riding a bike in the city gives you a different kind of intimacy with your environment that you get from walking, because in addition to everything that a person on foot experiences, you also have a view of the city as a network. Example:
1/
Lol this is a …solvable problem? They are literally the police and this is a crime they AND THE MAYOR have explicitly said they intend to combat?
They are not serious people
he didn’t get a school zone violation
he got a regular speed limit violation from a speed camera that is located in a school zone
how is he still going
Delete your own, mooks. You want to send me a straight speeding ticket, I pay without comment. You send me one invoking a school-zone violation, I am going to rightly note the fact that no school is operant on the date and time. In my city, we employ that statute judiciously.
@SilverFoxReturn
@aGreenQueenNYC
Then we have to respectfully disagree, because I don’t think cops should be allowed to kill you for running away under any circumstances, least of all for a traffic infraction that isn’t even a misdemeanor
Wait LA WAS LITERALLY BUILT AROUND RAIL and rail was still one of its most important circulatory systems for people within the lifetimes of my own parents
@RobD2020
@maxdubler
LA wasn’t built around rail so it will never be economical to build rail. It will always be a money losing system that drains society of resources.
I’m referring to political decisions related to infrastructure projects (not regulations) like “we are going to buy all American”…
@richmintz
NYC taxpayer approved. We support the NYPD. Our friends and family are members of this core.
Fascist would be for the NYPD to create a database of all their haters and delay assistance when needed. Hint hint
@NYPDnews
F all u haters of law and order.
Street cleaning day, San Francisco. Traffic agents one block ahead of the street cleaner, getting every occupied car to move and summonsing 100% of parked cars.
The city functions because the city government imposes consequences on people who obstruct it.
NYC is rolling out a new housing incentive that allows developers to mix luxury units (30% of project) with income-restricted units (70%) in exchange for subsidies and tax breaks
The program is targeting the areas on this map

32 NYPD vehicles (mostly official) stored in the 2nd Av bus lane between 23rd and 17th during the morning rush - - a bus lane serving the busiest route in NYC with 7 million riders a year
Why does the city bother building things, when the cops shit all over everything we build?
