Hi
#PortfolioDay
I'm Alison Sampson, I draw comics (interiors and covers) in London, UK. I like making art where the whole page tells the story (layouts, spaces, all of it), and digging into peoples emotions. I like drawing horror and nature, and lots of things.
Open for covers.
Put your health first, people. Especially if you are young. An injury in your twenties can come back when you are fifty and effectively disable you. Or worse. No work is ever more important than your health.
You are not bulletproof, no matter how young or award -winning you are.
This is Nia DaCosta. She is the director of Candyman. Jordan Peele is not the director of Candyman. He is a writer and producer for Candyman. Thanks for your time.
It's also OK to be a beginner at 50. I started this in my early 40s and now I am paid to draw comics and tell stories, a job I love. It's never too late to start.
someone really just said i should be ashamed of the skill level my art is at for being so old??? i’m 23??? also.. why does it matter..?! don’t let ppl shame you for getting into a hobby later in life. you can be a beginner at 25 years old and that’s perfectly okay
This is the future of AI. We will no longer be able to tell what is real.
Far more important than the lack of human hand in ai, it is an attack on truth, and it'll put us completely at the mercy of people who control the media.
I'm Alison Sampson, I draw comics, posters & illustrations. I like storytelling + making work with feeling & emotional depth. Recent books include The Department of Truth and the Sleeping Beauties GNs.
Links in thread. Currently taking on cover work for this year.

Started the lockdown in London by getting locked into my local graveyard. Had to call the local library for help. They wheeled out a giant bookcase and we climbed up the fence onto it and then down the shelves. This just happened.

I've been diagnosed with breast cancer. Whilst this is not my fave holiday activity, it has been caught early, and is going to be treated, the
#NHS
cancer track is efficient and I'm in good hands. I'm still drawing and there's no reason to stop doing that, yet. Fingers crossed.
Hello
#PortfolioDay
I'm Alison, in London, UK. I draw comics (sequentials here) and make illustrations. Illustration clients have included Netflix, the BBC, the Guardian newspaper, Hayward Gallery and others, and I am looking to do more.

That Robin Eisenberg Wonder Woman cover for
@DCComics
is so awesome. Pale denim! Big hair! A body I can identify with. It's so fun. I'd like to see more art on direct market books like this.
Losing your job, especially if its a vocation is devastating. Here's the first page of comics I ever drew, about exactly that experience. It took a long time to come back from. I was not promoted and later let go because 'you are a woman, we didn't know what to do with you'. 1/2
Comic Artists: post your sequentials and I'll share as many as I can. Comics is far more than the covers of the books, let's uncover what we do and show the storytelling.
I'm posting a page of inks a day from Sleeping Beauties with a bit of commentary on the storytelling. I'm very proud of this book. There were a lot of choices to make, mostly because we were compressing 700 pages into two hundred and something of real estate. This is *that* story

The Tori Amos Anthology has received four Eisner nominations, two of which were for the book itself. Rantz offered me space in the book for my 1st writing gig, I drew it while i waited for my radiation treatment. Delighted to be there & honoured to be part of the nominated team.
Hi, I am Alison Sampson, I draw graphic novels both comics interiors & covers (for Image, Marvel, Dark Horse, IDW, etc) and editorial art.
I like designing imaginary+ real places, & am currently drawing Sleeping Beauties, next up: Hellboy.

Hi
#VisibleWomen
it is Alison here. I like drawing places that tell a story and stories with emotion. Sometimes called a horror artist, or 'trippy', i just like composition and am open for covers this year.
I'm out of Surgery and in Recovery. As to how it went, that is tbc, but I feel fine right now, and everyone has been so gentle/ skilled. Let's hope the results are good- I'll get the news in 2 weeks time.
Now- must *not* use right arm for a couple of weeks.

is The best.
Just got a nice letter from the NHS telling me I am cancer free (or at least the bit they looked at is). Yay!
Thanks everyone at the

Sleeping Beauties.
Issue
#7
is in shops on 6 October.
Get your pre-orders in asap.
The Volume 1 hardback hit shops in April 2021, if you want to catch up, and that's available at book and comic shops everywhere.
AT LAST :)
(This was solicited before and then 3 days later I got a cancer diagnosis and had to deal with that. Dark Horse were great, allowed me to pause to get better, and I'm delighted this is finally out there.

AI is an outdated term. The words are "machine learning".
If we used the right words then we might not make the software sound so magical and more like (currently) the theft and wallpaper construction it is. There's nothing 'intelligent' about it. There's no ghost in the machine.
It's exactly a year since I was called into the scary waiting room and was told I had cancer. I was surprisingly ok with it- just a victim of statistics really. But I'm glad it's hopefully behind me. Let this next year be cancer free (please).
Looking forward.
I don't want to hear a comic writer telling me that making comics isn't that hard. Cartoonists- fine- they know the score. But people who don't draw... Like any job, it's always good to understand what the other person puts in.
Mine was "if you don't draw, that's your funeral". I think the slightly morbid tone made it stick with me, but the message that you've got to execute, or it doesn't count stands. It's so easy to get bogged down in ideas.
Hi, I'm Alison Sampson, a comic artist & illustrator. Here's art from Sleeping Beauties, and Hit Girl Mumbai on the left, with color by
@Treestumped
and variant covers for Echolands (
@JHWilliamsIII
), These Savage Shores (
@therightram
) color by me.
I like nature.

Hi, I'm Alison Sampson and I draw comics. I'm into telling a good story in whatever form & taking the reader on a journey. More sequentials at , or alissamp at gmail
This art mainly from Sleeping Beauties.
Will attempt most things. Try me.

When you support bitcoin you are profoundly disrespectful of the work of millions of people around the globe who are working to mitigate climate change, and you contribute to future social problems. We have choices right now.
Please do the right thing.
not to put it too bluntly or anything, but when you can't wipe your ass at 60 because your arm is too stiff, these corporations are not going to be around to do it for you.
I don't know why this needs saying, but it seems it does.
It's important to value yourself *throughout* your life, not just for the first twenty five years.

Going to see my dad today. He is really not well and is not going to be with us much longer. Please send all your most positive thoughts, it is not going to be an easy next couple of months.

Given that Tori Amos anthology is now in shops, here's a page (non spoilery) from my story (written, drawn, colored and lettered by me), inspired by the song The Pool.

Thanks for letting me write, Rantz.

I've not been able to draw Hellboy when I was supposed to, because I've got breast cancer and I have to stop work to be treated for it. I am still drawing it *next* but only after I've been able to heal a bit and go to a million hospital appointments (not a million, but a LOT).
Radiation treatment starts the day after tomorrow. I'm apprehensive and I'm missing my aunt's funeral on the first day, but hopefully this is the beginning of back to normal.
Here's our girl Mindy. I drew her with a plainer outfit as she's so tiny- only 12 years old- and with anything more complicated she disappears into super maximal Mumbai. Triona's color work is outstanding IMHO and the book is worth it just for that.
Tomorrow I have the annual scan after my first diagnosis of BC. It's a big date for me. To be all clear, at least for now, would be very nice, keep your fingers crossed for me. Also, thank you

Hi, I'm Alison Sampson and I draw comics (currently the adaptation of Sleeping Beauties by Owen and

One thing that makes me happy this year is to be still alive. It might not have been the case, had I put off an appointment. And after that, quite a lot is good. Because I nearly lost all of it.
I just got to see an advance copy of Amythyst
#1
by
@amyreeder
and it looks so, so good. Just brilliantly designed and full of Amy's signature dynamic art and heroes and villains, and pretty much everything. Really fun. And so pretty.
Here's a page of Sleeping Beauties sequentials for today. Adapting a horror novel to images isn't a straight line- there's some things better imagined than seen, and hence you might hide a particularly gruesome crime scene/ event in plain sight. Horror is all about timing.
@AfterLifeMaster
@NBCNews
it is not 'learning'. And it is not 'artificial intelligence'. It's just mashing up existing bits of actual people's copyrighted work.

My dad passed away in the middle of February and the funeral was today. It was as hard as you'd expect it to be, but also nice to meet some very old friends (he was 87), and to remember him. Thank you for all your kind words. We have all appreciated them.
Once more, Triona's coloring. This could have been done in a number of ways, but look at it. Making the Dharavi slum into a personal patchwork- what it really is. It is one thing to color a character, its another to use color *from scratch* over a landscape to say something..
Well, DOT
#16
is out today. I hope you like it- warnings for nudity, smoking, sex, and some truly exceptional coloring from Jordie Bellaire. It's also my "Fuck Cancer" special. Enjoy.
I drew the Hit Girl: India series of comics from
@ImageComics
, set in Mumbai, written by
@1PeterMilligan
and colored by
@Treestumped
and the last issue came out yesterday. Here's two pages. If any reviewers or retailers wish to see a pdf, hit me up. The TPB is out mid Feb.
Thank you for the outpouring of support. This is all very sudden- it's gone from routine scan to diagnosis in less than three weeks and I'm a bit scared. So all this helps, and I'm very grateful.

Someone just asked me if Black Lives Matter had blown over yet.. which tells you everything you needed to know, and everything you didn't need to know, about racism in the UK.
One thing I didn't know about cancer: the utter abject terror of trying to get stuff done before you *can't*. I think this is maybe the first time in my life control has been taken from my hands.
There's been a bit of back and forth about what it has been like as a young architect. I think it would be helpful if we (not so young architects) were a bit more open (I'm not going to say honest, but, yeah, honest). Here's a bit about how it was for me. Here's me at about 28 >>
Only 12 days left on our Kickstarter for MEANWHILE... A COMIC SHOP ANTHOLOGY! I still can't believe we got
@geoffjohns
and
@ScottKolins
to do a story. What does this have to do with a comic store? Find out by backing the comic!
Thank you for all the well wishes. It has been really nice to have the support. Surgery went well, and I'm recovering. However there were two things found, twice as big as expected. This means next steps are more tbc than they were. I've gone from very lucky to just lucky.
It's here.
#DepartmentofTruth
Which means that I was wrong and DOT

isn't next month, but *next week*. I hope you'll pick it up.

When I was in my early thirties, I looked like that. It's really not unusual for women who go to the gym to have a bit of muscle mass/ tone. I'm amazed guys don't know this.
Something everyone should be taking away from this comic script discourse is that artists are as much the author of the comic/ graphic novel as the writer, and they should be credited as such. On Nielsen by publishers. *Not* as the 'illustrator'. It's an important distinction.
