Why is the Chairman of the OBR doing broadcast rounds after Budgets? He's a civil servant required to maintain an extremely delicate position of political impartiality to support evidence-based forecasts. What's to be gained from a chat with Amol Rajan?
"Are departmental spending plans still a 'work of fiction'?"
@AmolRajan
asks the Chairman of the Office for Budget Responsibility.
Richard Hughes tells

he doesn't know what the plans are, so 'without that kind of detail you can't really judge'.

Delighted to have been appointed as Chair of the Towns Unit, working with No.10 & DLUHC to deliver the £1.1bn Long Term Plan for Towns. I'm doing the role alongside

Recently a journalist called and asked me if I was trying to become an MP. I fudged an answer.
So I've written for

The news is out:
@SebastianEPayne

Hugely excited to start working with Seb - we've got big plans for 2023. Never been a more important moment to be making the case for a mainstream, moderate conservatism.

London's nightlife & culture are part of what makes it one of a handful of truly global cities. A new 22,000 capacity venue in Stratford, next to Westfield, could be a huge boost. The London Legacy Devt Corporation backed it. DLUHC blocked it. 🤦♂️

Andy Haldane is, as usual, correct
We have to change how we think about large scale infrastructure projects - there's no way to rebalance the economy without them

Andy Haldane, former Bank of England chief economist, speaks to

Problem with excessive focus on Levelling Up Fund (& UKSPF) is it implies levelling up is all about public money. Test should be whether public £ unlocks private £. In previous regen attempts, it hasn't.
Andy Street agreed £4bn regen deal with L&G last year. Same as entire LUF!

More funding on retrofit is fantastic but it needs to be in the hands of Mayors and Council Leaders, otherwise the Govt will never get it out of the door. There's an elephants graveyard of these sorts of schemes in Whitehall - it doesn't work if you do it from the centre.

High tax rates are a factor in limiting the UK's economic growth. Much bigger factors are a low skills base, patchy infrastructure, an unstable policy environment, and a sectorally and spatially imbalanced economy. Tax cuts aren't the wrong idea, but they are the wrong priority.

Good progress on electric vehicle adoption - there will be a tipping point soon where everyone knows someone who has an EV and myths on cost/reliability fade away. But - still need to get charging infra and battery maintenance right.

I've learnt lots of things visiting towns across the country, but one of the simplest and clearest is that heritage makes people happy. Good to see the numbers back that up.
New research shows your life satisfaction improves to the value of £515 a year from living near heritage.
The overall wellbeing value for day-to-day encounters with heritage is estimated to be worth £29 billion annually in England.

This would be a good moment for No.10 to put out a bold pro-growth signal. Backing planning reforms & housing targets. Supporting onshore wind. Even locations for the university-focussed investment zones. The PM has pro-growth insincts, but now investors need to see some steel.
1️⃣ The public and Conservative voters remain overwhelmingly supportive of net zero - and expect ambitious action to reach it.
55% of the public and 49% of Conservative voters supported the net zero target, only 13% and 20% respectively oppose it /2

Relationships between older parents and their adult children are really important. When mum and dad live round the corner, you can check in on them or rely on them for childcare.
But in the last twenty years, generations of families have moved further apart. [1/6]
