The Commissioner is spot on here. One of the biggest challenges facing UK policing in my view is the lack of confidence from police officers. From stop and search, to public order and firearms. It’s corrosive to morale and proactivity.

Au contraire, if someone is trying to kill you, a firearm is the place to start. If you are fortunate enough to have other officers with you, then taser is a great less lethal option to have in support.

Here’s the clincher. 👀 We all know the starting point is Taser for all. Why I can carry one as a Response Sgt, but a Neighbourhood Sgt can’t is silly. If someone’s trying to kill you, a Taser is a start. But if it fails, you need a Glock. That’s the reality. #ThinBlueLine ⚡️

There is no evidence that S&S reduces violent crime. An officers presence would be enough to deter violence but the activity they undertake should be better community policing which increases community confidence & potentially intel @NBPAUK

It sits there on your belt and you’ll likely forget it’s even there until the moment you need it and then you’ll wonder why you didn’t always have it.

@bylandseaandair It was apparently considered as an option with taser, but I’m not aware of it being considered with firearms. But yes, the tech often lets the officer down. Although sometimes they do just forget, or turn it on incorrectly.

Armed officers are just as approachable as unarmed officers. They’re just more versatile, or at least they could be if there were more of them.
