What I have seen in #CAR is a striking example of how food insecurity translates into a protection crisis. Displaced people eat once a day. Hunger pushes them to take tremendous risks by leaving camps to seek food. The result: women, men and children are maimed, raped and killed.

Yesterday, NRC’s house in #Damasak , NE #Nigeria , was burnt to the ground. It’s the FOURTH senseless attack on the town already in 2021. As humanitarians are increasingly being targeted, the lifeline of thousands of people already affected by horrific violence hangs by a thread.

UPDATE 23/10: 1,235 #Syria ’n refugees arrived in #Kurdistan , #Iraq last night. All of them still crossed via informal crossing point (Sahela and Walid). Crossing via these routes by night puts refugees at risk, this needs to stop. The border needs to be open. Total now 8,376.

Happening now, 151 families in Hamam al-Alil camp are being evicted and sent back to Hawija despite not being welcome by their community. Some of them clearly received threats if they return. Camp evictions must stop in #Iraq until conditions are conducive for safe returns.

In the rubble of #Sinjar - #Iraq , I met Sahir, 62, one of the few that dared coming back despite the lack of everything. He told me he doesn't believe nor expect any help anymore. "Many people promised to help but never came back. We have been forgotten by everyone," he added.

UPDATE: 549 #Syrian #refugees newly arrived via Al Waleed in the Kurdistan Region of #Iraq today. 826 refugees will be transported to Bardarash camp today. The total number of arrivals since is now 1,006. Aid agencies are expecting 50,000 arrivals in the next 6 months.

On this #WorldFoodDay , let me emphasize that 1 in 3 Congolese like Gloria, is hungry. #DRC has become the world’s worst hunger crisis. Decades of civil war have left millions dead or displaced. The number of severely hungry people skyrocketed from 13M in 2019 to over 27M in 2021.

The fact that the color-coding of the humanitarian crisis funding rate turns green at 50% on the UN tracking platform says a lot about the average crisis funding rate. Ex: DRC received 51% of the funds needed in 2022 for the 27 m ppl in need. DRC is anything but green🔴
