In many crises in Central and West Africa, insecurity, bureaucratic impediments, and restrictive laws can be also considered access constraints.

ANNOUNCEMENT: After 5 years with
@NRC_Norway
, I am stepping down as Regional Media Adviser for Central & W Africa.
I invite communicators with a strategic vision, a journalistic mindset & a strong ambition to drive change through advocacy to apply here:
The World Food Programme in Bangladesh urgently needs US$118 million to restore the full $12 ration for Rohingya refugees for the next 12 months.
Monthly rations for refugees in Cox’s Bazar remain at only US$8 per person per month - just 9 cents per meal.
As impactful as a hundred press releases.
NRC's
@Karl_Schembri
book for children is being used in Sudan classrooms.
A heartwarming story based on the Better Learning Programme, which promotes understanding & hope for displaced children who experienced traumatic events.
⚠️While a striking number of 38.2 million people are in urgent need of food assistance in
#WestAfrica
(+CAR), humanitarian funding is so low that some countries won’t conduct any food insecurity assessment and projection (IPC) in the near future.
Humanitarians will be blind.
This is in
#Mosul
today, in the centre of the old city. 2 years after the retaking of the city, bombs remnants are still putting people at risk as most of them have no other option but rebuilding with their own hands. This
#shell
is accessible to children playing in the area.
What I have seen in
#CAR
is a striking example of how food insecurity translates into a protection crisis. Displaced people eat once a day. Hunger pushes them to take tremendous risks by leaving camps to seek food. The result: women, men and children are maimed, raped and killed.
Together with
@NRC_Norway
, I’ll attend the European Humanitarian Forum in Brussels today and tomorrow. We’ll advocate against the Neglect from the International community of major crises such as
#DRC
and

Some strong figures:
26.4 million ppl are hungry in
#DRC
, making it the most food insecure country in the world.
With 5.7 million ppl displaced, it also has the largest number of internally displaced ppl in Africa.
Yet, only 48 % of the required funding was received in 2022.
In Central & West Africa, our capacity to reach ppl in need has significantly decreased in recent years.
We don't talk about it loud enough.
Today,

, people are gathering at the border with Rwanda but crossing is challenging. We managed to evacuate. It’s now forbidden to take a boat on the lake for security reasons.
Addressing crises such as in Burkina Faso and DRC requires overcoming donor fatigue.
The only acceptable fatigue is on the faces of children who have suffered for years from violence and displacement.

REPORT: The top 10 neglected crises are all in Africa.
The war in Ukraine has demonstrated the immense gap between what is possible when the international community rallies behind a crisis, and the daily reality for millions of people in Africa suffering in silence.
Meet Yannis, 8, working in the mines of Cameroon to survive as he doesn't receive the aid he needs.
Why? Because for the int community, his life is worth less than the life of a Ukrainian refugee.

The
#WorldTeachersDay2022
is a reminder that not all heroes wear a cape.
Some have white chalk, a blackboard and an infatigable will to pass on the bricks of knowledge to future generations despite insecurity, displacement and very few resources.
Not less than 4 schools supported by
@NRC_Norway
were looted and damaged in the last 6 months in
#Ituri
,
#DRcongo
.
This is just the tip of the iceberg as many areas remain out of reach, out of sight.
🛑Attacks must stop. Schools must remain safe places for displaced children.
Bangui: Energy Total Centrafrique, the company responsible for the supply of fuel for air transport, has announced a total stock-out as of 2 July. Fuel shortages in the country are reaching catastrophic levels, with a huge impact on the ability of humanitarian workers to operate.
Niger is facing a tremendous challenge.
Amid growing insecurity, 40% of the children born in displacement don't have birth certificates, therefore no legal identity..and no future.

One more horrific attack in
#BurkinaFaso
as I just landed there after one year. The situation as only worsened as civilians are increasingly targeted. Meanwhile there is no clear strategy to protect them. 1.3 million people are displaced today.
What really strikes me every time I am in
#Basra
,
#Iraq
is the fact that there is
#water
everywhere. Yet, not a single clean drop in its canals, rivers and marshlands. Despite rainfalls 4x better than last year, very little seems to be done to prevent a new water&health crisis.

While the monthly food ration for Rohingya refugees has been cut recently by a third (33%), general food inflation in Bangladesh remains high: latest monitoring shows 9.69 percent in July.
Opposite trends exacerbating needs.
Excellent to see that
#Ukraine
humanitarian response will get a much needed 6.5 billion $.
I wish the 30million people hungry in
#DRCongo
, the 3 million people displaced in
#Nigeria
, and the 13 million people in need across Sahel would get the same support.

Yesterday, NRC’s house in
#Damasak
, NE
#Nigeria
, was burnt to the ground. It’s the FOURTH senseless attack on the town already in 2021. As humanitarians are increasingly being targeted, the lifeline of thousands of people already affected by horrific violence hangs by a thread.
UPDATE 23/10: 1,235
#Syria
’n refugees arrived in
#Kurdistan
,
#Iraq
last night. All of them still crossed via informal crossing point (Sahela and Walid). Crossing via these routes by night puts refugees at risk, this needs to stop. The border needs to be open. Total now 8,376.
Happening now, 151 families in Hamam al-Alil camp are being evicted and sent back to Hawija despite not being welcome by their community. Some of them clearly received threats if they return. Camp evictions must stop in
#Iraq
until conditions are conducive for safe returns.
In the rubble of
#Sinjar
-
#Iraq
, I met Sahir, 62, one of the few that dared coming back despite the lack of everything. He told me he doesn't believe nor expect any help anymore. "Many people promised to help but never came back. We have been forgotten by everyone," he added.
The al-Nuri Mosque in
#Mosul
July 2019 (left) and July 2018. One year difference shows the lack of reconstruction efforts in the city. The old city has barely changed, houses are down, ppl have to rebuild themselves. 300,000 ppl from Mosul district still displaced.
#RebuildMosul
Additional UPDATE 22/10: In the last 24hrs 1,736
#Syrian
refugees arrived in KRI. Total now is 7135, including 6955 hosted in Bardarash camp. The number of refugees arriving in
#Iraq
is constantly increasing as people fear renewed violence with end of ceasefire in
#Syria
.
Now that the
#Nyiragongo
eruption is old & the media is again looking away from
#DRCongo
, here is what should still make the news:
🟠Attacks displace 16K ppl in the last month in Djugu
🟠71K displaced ppl urgently need food assistance near Beni
🟠Plague is resurfacing in Ituri
This tragedy in
#BurkinaFaso
is yet another example of the brutality and senselessness of the violence faced not only by aid workers but also by too many women men and children in Central Sahel. We stand with
@MSF
and our peers.
UPDATE: 549
#Syrian
#refugees
newly arrived via Al Waleed in the Kurdistan Region of
#Iraq
today. 826 refugees will be transported to Bardarash camp today. The total number of arrivals since is now 1,006. Aid agencies are expecting 50,000 arrivals in the next 6 months.
Displaced and refugees in Africa were already facing tremendous challenges due to

FACT: 22 billion US$ lacked globally to cover humanitarian needs in 2022.
Do you think it's a lot of money? Not more than Europeans spend on ice cream a year.
International neglect is not a fatality, it is a choice and the world must choose to end it.

@NRC_Norway
is there to rehabilitate water facilities and make sure school remains a safe place for children
When states and nonstates actors involved in conflicts in West and Central Africa do not fully implement the Safe School Declaration, the result is inevitably catastrophic:
Today, an unprecedented number of 14 000 schools are closed as a result of conflict and insecurity.

#DRC
has become the world’s worst hunger crisis. Decades of civil war have left millions dead or displaced. The number of severely hungry people skyrocketed from 13M in 2019 to over 27M in 2021.
Victims in
#Niger
were in a vehicle from relief NGO Acted, which makes us think that some, if not all of them were aid workers. Incredibly bloody year for the humanitarian community. This year’s World Humanitarian Day on the 19th will definitely have a bitter taste.
#NotaTarget
Our call together with 12 NGOs working in
#Mali
to ensure new sanctions against the country must include humanitarian exemptions is being heard by the media sphere. We hope EU leaders will do the same amid soaring humanitarian needs.
The fact that the color-coding of the humanitarian crisis funding rate turns green at 50% on the UN tracking platform says a lot about the average crisis funding rate.
Ex: DRC received 51% of the funds needed in 2022 for the 27 m ppl in need.
DRC is anything but green🔴
