On this day, I was the lucky one. 6 others were evacuated to the hospital in Bastion. Bastion isn't there anymore. Neither am I. Lucky again I guess. The Afghans who worked with us, but are still there, are not lucky. Smoking cigarillos my dad had given me for "a bad day".

This little lad lost his leg to a Taliban IED and the wound became infected, his elderly dad brought him in to us to help. We treated him and I carried him out to the gate as the ground was unsuitable for walking on his crutch. Empathy and compassion run deep with our military.

A side to Afghan you'll rarely see. This was during my 3rd tour of Afghan when a father approached camp. His son had lost his leg to an IED strike a months before, the wound had become infected. Our medics treated the boy, checking his wound and helping prevent further infection

On the one hand it is deemed correct to promote a healthy diet and fitness routine, but on the other hand it is deemed offensive to treat obesity as unhealthy (E.g. fat shaming). Being overweight and/or inactive is not good, so why are we misleading the next generation?
