Uncanny Magazine promises that we will never use an artwork that was not created by an artist. We believe in art created by humans and paying the artist who created it.
Uncanny does not provide review copies to any reviewer who has an agenda against marginalized voices. We also will never promote their reviews, even if they are positive about a particular story. These reviewers actively hurt our community, & we want nothing do with them.
Please RT! Writers!
@UncannyMagazine
is NOW OPEN to SHORT STORY and POETRY SUBMISSIONS!!! We don't know when we are closing. WE ARE VERY EXCITED TO READ YOUR STORIES AND POEMS!!
While we were on vacation, the Internet exploded with a discourse about magazine submissions and AI-written stories. Since we are getting tagged in these discussions, we wanted writers to know about the situation at Uncanny. Currently, we haven’t experienced these issues.
Writers, we know how disappointing it feels when your story is rejected. But please, never, ever respond to one of our fabulous submissions editors with an email questioning their decision in an obnoxious manner. There is nothing to be gained by being an asshole.
Please RT! Writers! Uncanny Magazine is OPEN to Novella (17,500 to 40,000 words) submissions from May 1 to May 15!!! We are also OPEN to short story submissions (750-10,000 words) from May 1 to May 7! WE WANT TO READ YOUR GORGEOUS WORDS!

These submissions will be auto-rejected, and authors will no longer be able to submit to Uncanny Magazine if we discover that they used artificial intelligence or similar technologies for creating their submissions.

Hi Space Unicorns. We want to clarify a policy at Uncanny Magazine. There are very few places that review SF/F short fiction. Unfortunately, two award-nominated ones have frequently used their reviews to promote agendas against marginalized voices.
Earlier this week, the Uncanny Twitter account was tagged in a conversation about how a person could convert our web content into eBooks. If you love Uncanny & what we do, please don’t do that. eBooks are our major revenue source. That is how we pay everyone.
Space Unicorns, things are scary, & many of us will be home for awhile. If you would like any Uncanny Magazine issues as eBooks, just DM or email us, and we will send you a single issue eBook of your choice for free. Take care, friends. <3

Dear writers. As many of you know, the Thomas family has been dealing with some medical issues over the last few months. We are working hard to process all of the submissions, but we are running over 45 days on many. We appreciate your patience as we work through the submissions.
Please RT! Uncanny Magazine is reopening to short story submissions on Wednesday, August 12th! TOMORROW!!! We will close again at the end of the day (Midnight, Central) on Wednesday, September 9th. Please make sure to read the submission guidelines!
Since we were asked, Uncanny Magazine has no plan to suspend publication at any point in the near future. The entire staff already produces the magazine from their homes, and our business model has given us the funds to create all of Uncanny Magazine Year 6 (Nov ‘19-Oct ‘20).
That doesn’t mean we think we’re immune to these problems. We are already talking to our submission portal provider (Moksha) about future strategies. We are confident that we can find a strategy that works and doesn’t penalize marginalized/international writers.

This means a great deal to us, Space Unicorns.
@lynnemthomas
&
@michaeldthomas
edited and published much of Uncanny 2022 from Lurie Children's Hospital & from home during our daughter Caitlin's palliative care & Lynne's surgery. Thank you to our AMAZING STAFF & READERS! 🦄❤️
We saw one today on an SF/F news website bragging about how their web traffic increased after a large Internet discussion about their agenda. (We are not naming them or the other website which was part of a notorious slate for this reason.)
We are happy with our current system, and feel that we already have a strong groundwork in place to deal with most of the issues caused by a possible influx of AI-written stories, and will only need to tweak some things with our processes.
Please RT, Space Unicorns!

As many of you know, our dear friend and Uncanny author
@AlexBledsoe
’s son suddenly passed away this week. There is a fundraiser to help the family cover funeral expenses. Please consider giving something if you can.
PLEASE RT Space Unicorns! Uncanny Magazine is OPEN to short story submissions from October 2 to October 16! WE CLOSE TODAY!!! (When it is no longer October 16 anywhere on Earth.)
Devastating news. Literary giant Gene Wolfe passed away. Gene was kind and brilliant, and we treasured our moments with him (and his late wife, Rosemary). He was one of the greatest SFF writers ever. Gene's friends and family are in our thoughts.
Thread, especially for our Amazon Kindle subscribers. We were not offered the KU alternative, & will be reaching out to Amazon. Though we have many other revenue streams, this is still devastating. We will do our best to move Kindle subscribers to other platforms if necessary.
In an absolutely devastating announcement (right before the holidays) Amazon has informed us that they are ending their Kindle Subscription program in 2023 and trying to get magazines to switch to Kindle Unlimited. Asking for more details, but this is bad.

To clarify our most constant query, if you made your story or poem available to folks to read or purchase, it is published. The exception is sharing it privately with friends, critique partners, and family. It doesn’t matter if nobody came to your blog or nobody bought a copy.
