Now that the celebrations are over and I finally have time to make this post, I am happy to announce that I defended last Tuesday and have a fancy schmancy PhD to show for it! I can't believe my 3.5 years in Dallas zoomed by so fast and it's already time for the next adventure.

Reimbursement system for students
Just give me the money upfront I promise I will not leave this PhD and run away with the $500 dollars you give me
@GinaGoesOutside
Not so long ago I also had a silly moment while sweater shopping and bought this silly goose sweater. Can confirm it is not too silly to wear outside, it's actually a public favorite!
Super stoked to share my first first-author paper out in
@PNASNews
! We explore how ZIF-8 protects fragile biomaterials like liposomes from shear stress, allowing us to deliver them biolistically. Check out the full paper here:
Happy to share my
#RSCPoster
with all of you! In this work, we explored how ZIF-8 provides mechanical protection to a delicate biomaterial like liposomes against the harsh mechanical stressors of biolistic delivery.

A 5 minute walk from the chemistry building... I ate here as much as I could afford it.
My second first-author paper is now out in
@ChemicalScience
and is finally live! In this work, we explore the dose-dependent biosafety of ZIF-8 for intranasal delivery. We also took cool SEM images of cilia (see below). Full paper link:

I got the first prize in the Materials section in ACS DFW MiM 2024, hurray! Congratulations to
@OTrashi
and
@nantran003
for also winning prizes, making it a triple strike for the
@Gassensmith
Lab.
I had the opportunity to present my work in front of
@HarvardCCB
as one of the six graduate students selected for the Harvard Chemistry Future Leaders Symposium! We were greeted with top-notch hospitality, and got to meet with some wonderful and inspiring faculty.
I came second!🥈Thanks to all those who came and cheered, and
@UTDOGE
for organizing such a fantastic event. Congratulations to the other winners as well!
I'm a finalist for this year's 3MT competition at
@UT_Dallas
! Come and cheer for me and the other finalists this Thursday (and enjoy the snacks they provide after). For those who know me well, I will, for once, stop talking after three minutes. Shocking, I know.
Here is my second
#RSCPoster
! We are working on utilizing ZIF-8 as a coating to develop an intranasal-route, slow-release system. As a first step, we performed biocompatibility studies on mice with a focus on their respiratory health.

Pleased to share my third first-author paper published in
@Matter_CP
! If you're bored of reading long reviews, here is a short piece on how biomimetic mineralization has expanded beyond ZIF-8 over the last few years. Full text link:
2023 has been such an incredible year for this not-a-baby-anymore scientist. Gave 5 talks, presented many posters and won many scholarships, published 3 first author papers (
#4
in review), visited 8 new cities, and picked up a couple of hobbies. Manifesting an even better 2024!
2022 was quite the year for this baby scientist. Went to Germany and presented my work, hopped on 3 papers from my lab, soft-dropped my first author preprint (top secret) and almost wrapped up a second one! Here's to an even better 2023.

My undergrad academic advisor told me I don't have the "personality type" or the "perseverance" to be a researcher and I should find something else suited for "less academically inclined people".
Here at
@8thMOF2022
and listening to
@FalcaroG
's plenary talk! Very comprehensive overview of biomaterials in MOFs. (See
@Gassensmith
lab shoutout on slideee)
I will also be giving a talk on biomaterials (specifically liposomes) in ZIF on 7th Sept, 10:50 am!

Yes! Even in hindi it's "bisaain". Associated with dishes were eggs were cooked, or when goat meat is from an older goat. My parents can smell it all the time but I can never figure it out. Unfortunately, Google gives me no hits on a possible translation.
It was a bittersweet moment watching
@yaliniwijesund2
defend her thesis today and become a doctor! My entire first year I roamed around like a baby duckling behind her, learning everything I could from my mentor. Time flies, indeed. Good luck in Colorado, Yalini!
To do my part in making science accessible to non-English speakers, I have made a detailed video tutorial for extracting and culturing bone marrow dendritic cells from mice. The audio is in my mother tongue Hindi, with closed captioning in English!
Gassengang outing to the barn! We all rode Ryanne's horse Moose and everyone made delicious foods to enjoy afterwards in this sweltering Texan summer.
@Gassensmith
prepared his favourite vegetable, chicken. 10/10 Sunday night.
We saw the big beautiful Christmas tree outside New York Stock Exchange, then went and ate Chinese food, and are now going to watch Die Hard. Am I doing "Foreigner Celebrates American Christmas" right?
Sunday morning Chemistry PhD students' outing at the Buddhist Temple and Thai Market! (Not pictured: all the skewers I ate, and the best mango sticky rice)
I am here at Texas PEC but they unfortunately didn't think I was cool enough to have my real name (aka Six Shooter) on my name badge. 😢
Butttt I will be presenting my work in a poster! You can find me wearing a badge with my fake name (Sneha Kumari).
How are any of my future supervisors/bosses going to match up to the entertainment value
@Gassensmith
provides? I worry for my future.
I am now officially Sneha "Six Shooter" Kumari. See y'all at Texas PEC 2022. Pew pew!
Very glad that I was selected for and had the opportunity to attend the Future Faculty Identification Program at UT Dallas! Wonderful event organized by
@nikki_delk
, we had insightful inputs from many panelists including
@UTDPainLab
, Sue Minkoff, Fatemeh Hassanipour, and others.

My childhood in a photo - running up to an iyengar bakery in Bangalore to buy egg puffs with pocket money.
I would love to have the recipe if possible!
I will be presenting my work on intranasal delivery of ZIF at the MRS conference on Tuesday! (Yes my little mice snorted the sweet, sweet ZIF)
Grateful to have received the Betty and Gifford Johnson Travel Award, which made this trip possible.

TEXPEC2023 Day 2: Talks by
@ronsmaldone
and
@DasLabSMU
! Special congratulations to
@NiyatiA30
for winning 2nd place in the poster competition as well as her flash talk!
Shoutout to hero of the day
@Gassensmith
for using his lightning-fast reflexes to grab the closest FR-CP lab coat and run towards a lab fire and put it out!
(It was a tiny fire and we are all safe I promise)
@SBattenResearch
@MAbbas003
That's an unnecessary and loud vocalization of a subjective opinion (wtf is *real* pretty?) from a highly educated man such as yourself. Don't like it? Just scroll along.
Some screenshots from the
@Merck
Underrepresented Chemists of Color 2024 Winners Social Kick-Off Event! Excited to learn more about this very cool group of people with varying expertise and interests. :)
It's been almost a month since I returned from a conference, and three months since I paid for accommodation and registration. No reimbursement yet. I am genuinely perplexed how so many admin people can be on payroll for a 40 hour work week, and cannot get a simple job done.
I'm presenting at
#ACSSpring2023
! If you're interested in MOFs, vaccines, or both (or like listening to talks early in the morning), come check out what our group in collaboration with the
@MeloniLab
has been working on these past few months.
Sunday brunch with grad school friends where we * tried * to explore our identities outside of being PhD candidates (we failed miserably, but the food was so good)
@UTDallasChemBio
showing up at ACS DFW Meeting-in-Miniature 2024! Extra fun because it's my last conference as a PhD student, and I get to enjoy it with all my friends. :)
I loved contributing to this project and helping
@RyanneEhrman
wrap up this extensive study. We did some really cool experiments! Digging out depots to observe their degradation under SEM was amongst my favourite (Figure 4 in the paper).

Happy Diwali everyone! This is the first time my parents are experiencing the holiday without a single kid in the house, so a little extra love to the empty nester parents and their adult children who couldn't go home this year.
Proud to be amongst the first students of your lab! Setting up your new lab while doing research really did give me the experience of working like a graduate student in undergrad, and is 100% the reason I chose to do a PhD.
Grateful and privileged to be featured in the compendium "75 under 50 scientists shaping today's India".
Thankful for the platform being provided for research.
I blame the universities too. Why don't they waive TOEFL/IELTS for students who have done their entire formal education in English? If there is still such a dire need for evaluating such a bullshit criteria - set up a phone interview! At least it's free.
My entire school education was in English. My five year BSMS degree is in English. My MS thesis will be written in and presented in English. I’ve run and worked for English blogs and publications. But please, ask me to give this ridiculous and expensive for profit test
@KCGOrtiz
I second this! UT Dallas was the only school I got an acceptance letter from. This place gave me the chance to put my foot in the door, and make something of myself (still a work in progress, but it's happening).
Got the chance to attend two amazing talks given by Amir Hoveyda via
@UTDallasChemBio
's first Endowed Excellence Lecture in Chemical Sciences. Dr. Hoveyda also revealed to us that in his free time,
@filippo_romiti
hangs out with Emmanuel Macron.
@Gassensmith
Lab attended the
@WelchFoundation
conference, which had a star-studded talk lineup! Prof. John Rogers of
@NorthwesternU
talked about his research on patch devices that analyze sweat, and gave out some patches to students who asked questions (and I got one yippee!).
If my liked posts don't get shown to my community, how will they ever understand the magnitude of "cute animal clips" content I consume to keep myself afloat on a day-to-day basis?
I always thought it was excessive when my parents spent all day cooking and cleaning in excitement when they had an old friend coming from out of town to visit them.
I get it now. I've already asked for a day off, and I'm violently cooking and cleaning.
TIL that people use an electric knife (an AMAZING tool I had no idea existed until today) to cut a turkey. I always thought it was the responsibility of the most muscular person in the house to carve the bird.
@madhurarrao
Visited India after two years for 25 days. Now I'm just focusing on a countdown to leave. As much as I love the people I left behind, I cannot deal with everyone tearing my life choices apart over every breakfast conversation.
@SiddheshKumar19
After starting my PhD I realized just how much was wrong about the research culture in BITS. I was made to feel so incompetent all the time. My MSc Chemistry thesis advisor threatened to hold back my recommendation letters so I couldn't get into a PhD program.
Huge congrats to
@Wendy_Tang24
, the best undergrad researcher I could have ever asked for in the
@Gassensmith
lab (and best Taco Tuesday companion, btw). She is currently applying to grad schools, watch out for this jack-of-all-trades scientist!
Yesterday we had the joy of watching our AT graduates walking across the stage.
(Small grad pic as several of the F23 cohort had already graduated and then went on to AT and several decided not to walk.)
Whoosh! 💫
