While we're on the topic of normalizing failure in science, I spent the entire third year of my PhD (& multiple grant submissions) on a project that turned out to be all an artifact, & literally had to just throw away an entire year of work. Things turned out ok. Science is hard.

I'm teaching a microbial ecology class where ugrads collected, isolated DNA, and prepared 16S libs on 96 soil samples, and not only did they all work, the sequencing provider said they were "practically perfect libraries". Never underestimate what students can do.

Many lab classes now in person are full of students who haven't been in a lab in 2 yrs, or have never been in a physical lab at all. Our students need our support, patience, and encouragement now more than ever. A kind word may go a long way for the ones who need to hear it most.
