I have some big news!
I’m writing a book about spectroscopy! 🚨🧲🌈🖼️🔦
My book is narrative nonfiction—with illustrations ✍️
A huge thank you to my wonderful agent
@jkpapin
!!
Also thank you to my β-reader
@SKZingales
who has supported me through this whole process 🥹
Hi, I’m a chemistry prof who loves over-the-top makeup.
I’m teaching spectroscopy today, so 🌈 seemed appropriate.
Colors are ordered by wavelength (λ). Longer λ was placed in the inner corner w/ λ decreasing (E ⬆️) towards outer corner.

Accessibility Barbie here to remind you to wear a mic, turn on those captions, and wear a mask in high risk scenarios!
Happy first day of fall quarter!
TFW your university is administering an "anonymous" survey, but then ask my gender & department & academic rank. You know there is a DEI issue when it is pretty obvious from just those three answers who I am.
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but...
You can make great contributions to science by working 40 hr/week.
Also, you don’t need to be a PI to make great contributions to science.
I was telling my kids how I have finally scheduled some time to go into the lab & use the spectrometer after Thanksgiving.
9 yo: what are you going to spectraumatize?
For my daughters 3rd birthday, I made the horrible mistake of getting a Dora The Explorer piñata.
When her head came off? Hysteria. So many kids were sobbing! My husband was frantically duck-taping her head back on. It was a mess.
To celebrate

I did makeup inspired by two forms of carbon: diamond💎& graphite✏️
In diamond, C atoms are arranged tetrahedrally, while graphite has a planar, honeycomb-like structure.
Properties of diamond & graphite differ because of their structures.

It’s laundry day at my house and when cleaning out one of my coats I found some clean magnetic stir bars tangled with bobby pins.
It looks like art. I think I’m going to title this piece “women in science”
#RealTimeChem
Of all the topics in gen chem, I find acid-base to be the most challenging.
I see students struggling more w/ classifying the problem, than solving the problem.
Below is a decision tree I made to help students classify acid-base problems:

Yeah, it’s annoying that so few women win the Nobel in chemistry.
But, I’ll be honest, it’s not why I’m mad.
Academic science is constantly pushing out women due to its toxic environment & also lack of support for women who choose to have children.
It’s heartbreaking out here.
Yesterday I asked my 12 yo to help me with some work & I offered to pay her.
12 yo: How much will you pay me?
Me: How about $17/hr. That is minimum wage in Denver.
12 yo: I don't think that is a livable wage.
Me: It is for you because I pay for your living expenses.
Throwback to my Barbie materials synthesized during my PhD in chemistry, where I did work in organic semiconductors and solar PV.
Life sciences weren’t for me (but have mad admiration for those clever enough to pursue it!).✌🏻

YES!! I seriously had a guy tell me, “I think you mean Teaching Assistant not Assistant Teaching Professor”
Like I didn’t know the title of my own job.
😫🙄🙄🙄🙄
I feel like myself again!
My BFF and I used an Argon laser as inspiration (488 nm) and I love how my hair turned out. 💙🤓💙

My synthesis was a flop today, which is especially disappointing when I only have one day a week set aside for bench research.
Hoping next week goes better!
This chemistry makeup look is inspired by the flame test & emission spectroscopy! 🔥
When an atom or ion absorbs energy, electrons are excited into a higher energy level⬆️
When the electron relaxes back to a lower energy state⬇️, light is emitted!

Purple: K or Cs
I’m ready to get the party started!!
I can’t wait to see

I love basic research so much. The ability to discover the answers to questions on the molecular level is such a gift.
I think we should abolish the PI system in academia. The current system keeps a lot of great people out.
There are a lot of great scientists that don’t want to be the boss/manager.
Hire people to work in teams, as co-investigators.

from my family: copper roses!
My husband said they saw a local artist selling these on the side of the road & my 7 yo said, “Copper is mommy’s favorite Element! “ 🥰🤓
Should I add a patina to the leaves?

Being vaccinated does NOT mean you can drop out of Stanford, start a blood testing company with no scientific knowledge, deepen your voice several octaves, lean into that Steve Jobs aesthetic, only hire sycophants, falsify data, and mislead the entire healthcare industry.
@Chemjobber
"What do you do?"
"Chemistry"
"Really? Like Walter white?"
"No, not really. I use magnets and light to learn about molecules.”
"But, you do make drugs?”
"No."
"Huh, so you’re not a chemist?”
"Science. Giant magnets. I am Magneto.”
Many R1 universities deny amazing researchers tenure if they have not received a major grant.
There are many layers to this problem--but today's announcement really is a reminder of how flawed academic science is currently.
Very happy for Katalin Kariko!
Waving hello 👋 to my new followers!
I'm a chemistry professor & spectroscopist at University of Denver.
Spectroscopists study the interaction of light 💡& matter 💅 (yes, I have even studied fingernails!)
This is a thread of a few science-y things I've shared here on Twitter.
In chemistry, we don’t say “I love you” we instead just include detailed steps of how we prepared the compound in the methods section... and I think that’s really beautiful.
Pet peeve:
“Science is more of a calling than a Job. You shouldn’t count the hours you work.”
Nope. Science is my job. I work really hard, but I’m not working much more than 40 hrs/week.

My husband was teaching Sunday school today. The topic was the imagery of light in the Bible.
Husband: “Debbie is a spectrometer, so I want her to tell us a little bit about the physics of light.”
😂😂😂
He tries, y’all. He tries.
Chemistry of slime makeup look!🧪
Slime is made by mixing glue (contains polymers like polyvinyl alcohol) & a borax solution (sodium tetraborate).
Borate esters form cross-links between the polymer chains. These cross-links give the mixture its slimy consistency!

First time I’ve done my hair & makeup in about 2 weeks for a few zoom meetings today ... I had to document!
I found this cute bolo tie necklace at a thrift store last week. It’s perfect for remote teaching 🥰
Red flags in academia (men or women!)
🚩books two spectrometers simultaneously
🚩does not sign the log book
🚩rude to staff
🚩ignores lecturers/teaching profs
🚩when offered a mic they say, “I don’t need it I have a loud voice”
🚩calls students (grad or undergrad) “kids”
everyone is posting their red flags in men. here are mine.
-books >3h nmr time during work day
-in an all male research group
-does total synth
-boring group meeting slides
-knows how echem works
-clean fume hood
-mean to undergrads
-too many pubs
-not enough pubs
-in academia
This is an amazing resource for converting common (in-person) active learning activities to different physically distant scenarios. It was created by Dr. Jennifer Baumgarner of LSU:
My dad visited my environmental chemistry class today and asked to take a selfie with me 😅
He is also a retired television engineer so of course he had to optimize the display in class today 😅
Haha parents really are embarrassing for life

I have one simple request:
Read a book by a trans author / about a trans person!
Here are 16 books that I read recently and they were all A+
Reading books by authors with a different experience builds empathy, knowledge, & compassion.
Can someone come gather my tween?!
She put a shortcut in my phone so anytime I type LOL it turns into “i laughed so hard i pooped a little”
I’m annoyed at what a good prank this is and it’s already gotten me twice this morning 🙃🤣🥲
I discovered that for me, the use of my title is VITAL to remind students that I am qualified to be their professor.
I don’t need to humanize myself. I have to do everything I can to gain my students respect.
Am I the only professor who feels their class was actually better online?
Like, especially from an accessibility standpoint? Easier to see "board work" with my notebook and document camera, easier to hear students, easier to ask questions (in the chat, or by unmuting), etc...
Hi! I’m Debbie & I’m in Denver, CO.
I wear a mask when I teach & in public/crowded/indoor spaces bc 1. to protect the most vulnerable in my community and 2. because I, myself, am disabled.
I wish the burden didn’t fall on disabled folks, and would love to see masks normalized.
Hi! I’m Danita & I live in Ontario. I mask bc it’s the safe & compassionate thing to do. I also love that it signals solidarity & resistance. I want to protect myself & my community from a deadly, disabling virus. Living with COVID does not mean ignoring it, it means adapting ✌🏻
Last night, my daughter drew this adorable picture of me and my 2 kids because, “you’re a chemist!”
She’s just the best so I had to share. 💜💜💜

Y'all, can we have an honest conversation about Chegg?
I have been writing my assessments open book/open note/open internet & have worked really hard to write questions that are not google-able.
Only to find some of my creative work posted on Chegg? I am devastated.
I don’t usually share pics of my kids... but I can’t get over this very short video of my son skiing.
He is six & it’s his second season & he’s never had a formal lesson.
Like, I just don’t understand.

Hi
@olgabot
, I hope you take some time to listen to the Latinx voices commenting here.
When I first saw this tweet, I assumed that this was the dress you wore to your own quinceañera.
This is not appreciating Latinx culture--It is appropriation. And, it is not okay.
Heading to an 80s party tonight! I’m wearing a pantsuit from the actual 1980s that I bought back in 2016 to wear while supporting HRC. 😭
LOL, my 80s costume is not that different from what I might wear on a regular Tuesday. 🙃🙃🙃
A question question I get asked a lot as a chemist:
“What’s you’re favorite element?”
Mine is definitely copper.
Today, in my chem+art class we worked with copper! We made copper patinas & etched brass using ferric chloride.

I turned my chem + art class into an after school program for a local elementary school.
The kiddos are using bullet journals as both their lab notebook & a place to reflect throughout the week.
It starts today & I’m SUPER nervous.
Do y’all have any advice for working w/ kids?

A meeting with a colleague today included a 5 mo old baby. 👶🏻
The babe was adorable and it was a super productive meeting.
Childcare in the US is really challenging before the baby is a year old. We should always welcome the little babies!
I have asked this soooo many times.
WHY do university administrators think it’s okay to have such huge chemistry classes??
(I have never received a satisfactory response 🙃)
Why is it generally accepted that foreign language class sections should be small (generally less than 40 students) but organic chemistry classes can be very large? Learning organic chemistry is literally like learning a second language, but with extra science components.

One reason? Americans don’t have reliable childcare.
For me, as someone who continues to have childcare issues in 2023…. I really don’t have time typically for a social lunch during the 6 hours I have on campus.
Okay honest question for

Have you looked at Albuquerque for a location for ACS conferences?
ABQ is a more affordable place to purchase lodging and is also a state that protects abortion rights and NM also just recently expanded protections for trans people.
We had a long road trip home today and I finished reading A Wrinkle In Time to my daughter.
I loved that the protagonist, Meg, loved math and that her mom was a scientist.
My daughter said, “I’m like meg! I like math and my mom is a scientist!”

continues to embarrass the hell out of Angewandte Chemie for publishing the BS anti-diversity take.
@angew_chem
has rejected every paper I've sent to them, and now I am feeling pretty happy about that.
Happy Monday, everyone!
My house is a mess, but I got ready today!
What are you excited about this week?
We are talking about color in my inorganic chemistry class this week, so I’m excited because it’s one of my favorite topics to teach!
More creative content lost to Chegg.
When will universities take this loss of faculty's creative content seriously?
Students--please please please do not upload questions to *any website* without your professor's consent.
I am begging you. This is a betrayal that hurts.
