The treatment of our most vulnerable citizens in industrial schools and reformatory schools, in Magdalene Laundries and Mother and in Baby Homes, represents a deep stain on our past. The abuse was facilitated and covered up by the Church at the highest level.

The new Domestic Violence Bill creates an offence of coercive control and recognises that an intimate relationship between a defendant and victim should be seen as an aggravating factor in sentencing. These are hugely important changes.

It is hugely disappointing that TD's have voted by 80 to 64 to accept a government amendment to the motion. The motion has been carried which means that maternity leave will not be extended by 3 months for mothers whose maternity leave was affected by COVID @matleave2020
