Today I met with Assistant Commissioner Paula Hilman head of Roads Policing in An Garda Síochàna. Since uniformed Gardaí have been carrying out 30 minutes of roads safety policing per shift we have seen an increase in the number of breath tests undertaken & speeding fines issued.
An update following cabinet approval for legislative change to allow resumption of returns to the UK.
This is one of a number of measures which I am taking to make sure we have an immigration system which is firm but fair.

Any attack on a member of an Garda Siochana is an attack on our democracy and our state. Gardai have my full support in their work & while peaceful protest is a right we all value, we will not tolerate vandalism and attacks on Gardai.

Looking forward to discussing the EU Migration Pact at the Joint Oireachtas Committee next week. This will be followed by full debates in the Dáil and Seanad. The Pact will speed up the processing of asylum applications so that we have a firmer and fairer system.

Supporting the Gardaí in their work will always be a priority for me as Taoiseach.
Uniform Gardaí are to carry out at least 30 minutes of roads safety policing per shift with immediate effect, due to the increase of fatalities on our roads.
This increased presence will also help An Garda Síochána to detect other crimes which rely on our road networks.
