My website, "The Wilhelm Scream every time the Tories lose", will be running on election night

@metpoliceuk
Can you please provide the criteria your officers used to determine who to swab, the number of people swabbed and the number of positive results for each drug tested for? For avoidance of doubt, this is a Freedom of Information request
@metpoliceuk
Oh, and could you also tell me the legal basis on which this operation was carried out - that is, what law allows you to swab whatever people you choose under whatever criteria were used? And were the people you chose given the opportunity to decline consent?
The X/Twitter update to remove headlines from link previews has also completely broken their accessibility.

Hi
@IoWBobSeely
, I saw you on

just now denying that you called the privileges committee a kangaroo court. Here's you calling the privileges committee a kangaroo court.
If you're still awake, and you enjoyed this, and you like low-fi ambient beats to relax/study to, and you like trains, and you like Scotland, then you might like

If anyone needs this split into 2,440 individual mp3s - because why wouldn't you - I've put them here:
And if anyone wants to help transcribe all the files, here's a shared sheet, which has a good chance of descending into chaos:

I've built a thing to try and mitigate the impact of X/Twitter's link preview changes.
Just add before any URL you share here and it will show a card with a small thumbnail, the headline and a description (on desktop)
For example:
@CCHQPress
Hi
@CCHQPress
, it looks like you've accidentally edited out all the bits where he talks about prosecuting her or applying a prevention order rather than extrajudicially stripping her of her citizenship. Whoops! I've included the unedited video here to help you out
The misconception that there is no sound in space originates because most space is a ~vacuum, providing no way for sound waves to travel. A galaxy cluster has so much gas that we've picked up actual sound. Here it's amplified, and mixed with other data, to hear a black hole!
If the link is the very last thing in your tweet, X/Twitter removes the link from your post and just shows the preview. You need to paste the link TWICE, then the first one will show up. Or you can include some other text after the link. You should also include the article title.
@metpoliceuk
Doesn't seem like a very effective liaison team if you liaise with them and *still* end up getting arrested. When you say "it was not clear", do you mean they told the arresting officers and the officers didn't care? Because it seems unlikely that didn't come up in conversation
I recently made an FOI request to
@TfL
for their Equality Impact Assessment on Colourful Crossings (AKA 'the asphalt art project'), plus any other documents they held which considered the impact they have on disabled people (long thread)
I don't understand how they've messed this up. It *could* have been accessible, because they're using the aria-label on the link to allow the headline to be read by screen readers and other assistive tech. But the aria-hidden="true" on the div around it means AT can't see it.
btw that sound you hear is a million developers scrabbling to burn headlines into their OpenGraph image previews so people know wtf they're clicking on
@theJeremyVine
@MikeyCycling
It's not even being prosecuted
Met police said “The matter was concluded by way of a community resolution order issued to the driver, who also agreed to pay compensation for the damage to the man.”
This is such an obviously awful idea that I've put in an FOI request to
@TfL
to find out how it got signed off. I'll report back when I get a response (it's due 16 October).
I've excluded commercial information from my request because it would likely delay the response.

. Here's the cookie banner on the Tory website. The ICO are clear that users must be able to reject non-essential cookies as easily as they can accept. (Screenshot from a letter sent by ICO to sites which have banners which work like the Tories')
@TwitterDev
Do you think there was maybe a better way to approach this than cutting off access to extremely popular apps without any notice then posting a two-sentence statement days later?
@fesshole
That sounds awful. Where would you even find such a job? Like, what specific website would you go to? Or is there a phone number to call or what
And then the tabindex="-1" on the link doesn't allow the link to be focussed with the keyboard. But they *are* pulling through the og:image:alt meta tag which gives the image the correct alt text. It's so weird.
Aside from the accessibility issues, I've seen a few people saying the design change was done to shrink the height of link previews so they can fit more tweets on screen at a time. So why not just do this?

New accessibility bot klaxon!
@UKGovAltBot
posts whenever a government account (at the moment, central gov and cabinet ministers) posts an image without alt text.
Most departments are pretty good at alt text now. Some others - and most ministers - not so much.
If you're a publisher or run any other website I recommend you switch to Summary Card format as soon as possible. They may well change that one too but it'll make your links usable for now.
Just change <meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image"> to content="summary"
@SarahM_Matthews
confirms links are also inaccessible in the Twitter app on iOS when using VoiceOver (they're announced but without a label giving the headline or any context)

If you're about to reply telling me I need to submit an "official" FOI request (either politely or by calling me a donut) I'll save you some time:

One hour gone, 53% complete. Who could possibly have predicted that asking people to meticulously catalogue Scottish train announcements would have been nerd catnip?

If the "public" site isn't secure, an attacker can modify your page as it goes across the network so that when someone clicks sign in they're taken to a phishing page

I truly don't understand the point you're making here. Police racism is bad. Inaccessibility is also bad. We should work to make sure neither happen rather than just accepting the status quo. What am I missing?

Highway Code rule 239. Of course it's sensible for cyclists to try and stay out of door zone, but that doesn't take away from the fact that the driver is at fault if they hit them. You should be checking your blind spot by looking over your shoulder, same as when changing lanes.
Anyone having a BBQ today, stick ambient ScotRail beats on in the background and post a video and I'll love you forever. I'll let you decide if that's an incentive or a deterrent. I want to see you vibing to a supermarket trolley on the track.
RIGHT. It turns out this change only applies to websites that have been configured to use the 'Summary Card with Large Image' format. The 'Summary Card' format is unaffected for now and will display as shown in my previous tweet.
DELOITTE SERVICES LP contributed at least $2000 to Florida State Senators who voted for the "Don't Say Gay" bill betweeen October 18th, 2021 and December 1st, 2021. Here's what they contributed: (🧵)

Also Oli if you're now very keen on fixing the cost of living crisis via the medium of trains, perhaps you could make it so my return ticket to work isn't £44 for a 35 mile journey? Cheers buddy

Has this campaign site been through an accessibility audit? There's missing alt text on half of these images, and two of the three videos don't have transcripts
@KollaChampagne
@metpoliceuk
Hi Ciarán - they can choose to tweet their reply, or publish on their disclosure log and tweet or DM a link. They can also ask me for an email and send that way if necessary. I'll post their response to this thread either way.
@mer__edith
I'd be very interested to know if there was any actual user research that went into this decision. It's not going to make me suddenly try and persuade everyone I know to start using Signal, it's just going to make me stop using Signal.
This is a nice example of prioritising the right thing in alt text. It starts with the actual text in the image, before describing other visual information that might be of interest but isn't as important as the text.
Vision is a spectrum, and every blind or partially sighted person experiences and sees the world differently.
Here’s how Lisa describes her life with nystagmus. How would you describe your level of vision?
#SeeThePerson
You'll also eventually want to change the image to a square aspect ratio (especially if you add in things like logos in the corners) but at the moment showing the headline and making the link accesssible is more important than less-than-perfect cropping
@ukhomeoffice
As others have said, here's the full video:
I've also produced a transcript as that may be easier for some people to access.

The alt badge is great. I hope it raises awareness and gets more people adding descriptions.
