@RishiSunak
the cost of living crisis has left millions worried how they'll make ends meet.
I'd like to formally invite you, as the new PM, to join me asap once you take office for a special hour's
@itvMLshow
discussion/Q&A to answer/ease people's concerns.
I've put £1million in a fund to provide grants of £5k - £20k to small UK charities who are doing/want to do immediate Coronavirus poverty relief.
Please share to let any charities who may want to apply know.
Full info:
Went to cinema yest for 8:45pm showing, but it was 9:17 before the film actually started.
CINEMAS we pay to see films! Fine show 5/10min of ads & trailers, but this inflation to 33mins isn't on. Either cut pre-screening times, or tell us actual start times too.
RT if u agree.
Tragic news
The latest
@CornwallInsight
prediction, based on Ofgem's new methodology, is an 81% price cap rise in Oct (taking typical bill to £3,582/yr) and a further 19% in Jan (so £4,266/yr)
Action & planning is needed now. The zombie govt needs wake up sooner than 5 Sept...
I do roll my eyes when I hear "I don't know what I'm doing here" on

It's an entertainment TV booking. You're on there for one or more of...

I feel near tears after doing my show. I started doing what I do out of a passion for financial justice & providing solutions. To be unable to help a single mum who lost her partner in covid afford her energy bills leaves me feeling impotent. I'm shaking
Intervention is needed
What do you want, a medal for it?
Just received my CBE from Prince Charles at Windsor Castle. Incredible ceremony. Its called an honour and I genuinely feel honoured. Thanks to all of you who are regularly so supportive of my work.
Bloody depressing
@thismorning
phone-in again. So many people at crisis point regarding energy bills - including those with v high usage due to disabilities (home ventilators, oxygen concentrators, elec wheel chairs etc).
I am nearly OUT OF TOOLS to help
Govt must intervene
Thanks so much to the few attacking me as a 'sell out' after summarising that the Chancellor's package was more generous than expected.
I've spent months shrieking, pleading, urging for more help, calling out the dangers. I've nowt to sell out, I just try and call it straight
Some have started asking me why as a practicing Jew have I said nothing about the unthinkable dispicable atrocities committed by terrorists in Israel.
Frankly I've struggled to process it, and felt the combined gutteral fear for relations in Israel, anxiety about possible…
Dear
@RishiSunak
, the UK is on the brink of a personal finance precipice. Today you, only you, have the tools to pull it back. To save lives. To improve living standards. To reduce millions' anxiety
This is what builds a legacy and makes a great Chancellor. Pls seize the chance
Think it's time for me to sign off for the long Bank Holiday weekend. I'm reading too many ad honinem tweets from naysayers - it's not good for my pysche.
To the rest of you thanks for the support today. Wishing you as good a weekend as possible.

. Still gobsmacked. Thanks to all who voted. Its a huge privilege to have your support.
I don't really drink, maybe one a year, but maybe it'll be tonight :)
I'd like to formally apologise to the
@ofgem
staff for losing my rag in a background briefing just now and saying its changes are a "fucking disgrace that sells consumers down the river".
I should've behaved better. My ire's institutional not individual, its was inappropriate...
Just done an interview on
@BBCr4today
. calling for Sunak, Truss & Johnson to urgently meet (they are part of same party after all) to come up with an action plan to urgently intervene in the disastrous predicted 77% energy price cap due Oct
This isn't the time for a flaccid govt
The now regular attack line to call me a doom-prophet is bizarre. I'm the MoneySavingExpert & we're amid the biggest inflation crisis for 50yrs. Sadly I can't gloss over it.
If you're in a boat & see an iceberg, best to warn to steer away, not wait to see if you hit it.
10 days ago I sent Chancellor
@Jeremy_Hunt
a letter (below) asking him to postpone the govt's 20% increase in energy bills on 1 April.
Since, SEVENTY major charities (below), & the energy industry trade body have signed up to support the letter.
IF YOU SUPPORT THE CALL PLS RT
Interesting interview. I think describing Mick Lynch as flustered is pushing it a tad. He comes across as almost scarily unflustered to me - I don't envy those who have to face him across a negotiating table.
Agency rail workers will be stopped at picket lines and asked not to cross.
RMT union's General Secretary Mick Lynch got a little flustered explaining why...

Can't believe I'm writing this, but I wonder if this winter well need 'warm banks' the equivalent of 'food banks' where people who can't afford heating are invited to spend their days at no cost with heating (eg libraries, public buildings)?
We're all thinking of Her Majesty at this time - and wish her well.
A few suggesting I stop tweeting analysis and news about the big energy announcement when I get it today
On balance that's my work and what people want from me. So I'm making a tough call to provide the info
This is nonsense. To make that stamp duty saving you'd need to be buying a £500,000+ property.
With 10% deposit, cheapest fix mortgage would cost £2,400/mth (£28,000/yr). How can someone on £30k afford that
I am asking treasury to remove.
So David Cameron is to sit in the House of Lords ("taking back control from unelected officials anyone?") in order to be Foreign Secretary - which means he won't be able to be questioned by MPs in the chamber over foreign policy. Doesn't seem very 21st century.
I would politely urge the Conservative party to a v quick succession process. We need a working administration at speed.
This Winter will be catastrophic, pushing millions into poverty with typical energy bills rising to £3,000/yr. We need leaders in office taking action asap.
My Black Friday shopping memo...
If you were going to buy it anyway and it's half price, you've saved 50%.
If you weren't going to buy it, but do because it's half price you've wasted 100%.
Pls share to stop confusion.
THERE IS NO £2,500 CAP ON ENERGY BILLS.
Instead the new 1 Oct guarantee, like the old caps, limits
- Daily charge (28p gas, 46p elec)
- & Unit rates (10p/kWh gas, 34p/kWh elec)
So use more, pay more. £2,500 is just what someone with avg use'd pay
Watching the news tonight it is quite obvious that the test and trace system, that the govt has put its faith in, is working very well with two exceptions.
1. Test
2. Trace.
I find it incredible that the biggest challenge facing most homes in the UK - the nightmare impending 50% hike in energy bills - making energy unaffordable for millions, was just brushed aside in one question. We need action NOW to prevent a wellbeing catastrophe.
#PMQs
I'm seeing some misunderstanding the benefits debate as if it were workers v unemployed.
Roughly 40% of those who receive Universal Credit get them as in-work benefits to top up low incomes. Many others too have disabilities or mental health problems making work difficult.
A thought...
UK banks deliberately, systemically, missold, by script, over £40bn of PPI, ripping money out of the hands of the public including many vulnerable people - no bank CEO resigned.
It is a catastrophe Edwina!
While there are steps people can take to help themselves (I explain them in todays email )
Energy bills by Jan will cost on avg over half the full state pension & bigger proportion of basic UC. No sensible steps cover that!
I would like you, Martin, to stop using words like “catastrophe,” and instead advise people take sensible steps to reduce the effect on their families and businesses.
And stop pretending that governments can do everything.
They can’t.
We're rightly being told there will be a cost to all of us of the necessary sanctions on Russia & it'll exacerbate the cost of living crisis.
Yet lets be watchful that the narrative doesn't change so the whole cost of living crisis is due to it. It was in place long before this.
MP Lee Anderson today said “You can’t just keep throwing money at a problem, eventually you’ve got to try and get to the root cause of a problem.”
Sadly in a cost of living crisis where the poorest have income lower than their min outgoings the root cause is a lack of money.
Fuming to hear
@KwasiKwarteng
said fraud & online scams aren't something “people experience in their daily lives”
For the Biz Sec to say this is outrageous. Millions face it. It destroys lives & mental health. Pls apologise.

I wish call centres would stop playing automatic messages saying "sorry we are taking longer to answer your call than normal" EVERY time we call. This should not be set up as a default.
If it is a default then delay isn't longer than normal, it is normal!
It's a good moment to remind people of the 7 Nolan principles of standards in public life (how politicians, civil servants, charity trustees etc are bound to act in public roles)
1 Selflessness.
2 Integrity.

5 Openness.
6 Honesty.

I've read tweets saying people are "flouting the furlough scheme" by being "in parks, at beach or treating it as a holiday".
If an EMPLOYER chooses to furlough staff, it literally currently means they CAN'T WORK for them. Are we saying people should just cocoon in misery & wait?
Just surprised mini MSE by picking her up from school, something I can rarely do. She looked up, saw me, and said in the most beautiful, unaffected, unprompted way "my wish came true!"
I dont think anyone will ever say anything nicer to me in my whole life.
Question I'd like all potential Conservative leaders to answer (RT if agree)
The energy price cap's predicted to rise 64% in Oct taking a typical bill to £3,244/yr; & rise again in Jan to £500/yr more than when May's help package was announced. What'll u do to avoid this & when?
Taking a deep breath to return to twitter (in prep for tomorrow's almost certainly hideous price cap rise).
Must admit returning is raising my anxiety levels. After time away u realise while many on here are kind, there's also a weight of abuse & aggression that's hard to face.
And then there was quiet.
For a few weeks, I'm going off social to focus on being a dad, a husband & to recharge m'batteries - so I'm on form to help when the awful winter bills hit people. I'll be back for the day the new price cap's announced
Take care. Enjoy August's warmth!
GOOD. All unofficial indications now show it looks like we've now won this campaign. Energy bills WON'T now rise 20% in April. I'm grateful to all charities who backed us in it.
And after asking, it's important also to say thanks to
@Jeremy_Hunt
&
@grantshapps
for listening.
I've been accused of catastrophising about the energy hikes that have now come true.
Yet let me be plain, 'doom-mongering' or not.
More help is desperately needed for poorest or people will die this winter due to unaffordability of an 80% SO FAR energy price cap hike.
An action plan is needed TODAY
They are all in the same party, let's call on them to come together for the good of the nation rather than personal point scoring
People's livliehoods, mental wellbeing & in some cases very lives depend on this
This is a desperate

Was running late home just now, so jumped in a black cab.
The driver wanted to ask me a financial question, which I answered. Then at the end he refused to take my payment saying he wanted to say thank. So I said I'd give that amount to charity. Good karma all round. Feels good
I have just sent the Chancellor
@Jeremy_Hunt
- supported by major charities - a letter asking him to postpone the government's 20% increase in energy bills on 1 April.
The letter is at attached (plus supplementary explanation) please read and feel free to share
Twitter really is a horrible place sometimes. I tweeted a nice little comment about my little girl. Only to get lots of
@_DHOTYA
replies. Why would i bother making something like that up. I was proud of her. I've deleted it, as i can't be bothered with people who want to ruin it
OK I admit it - when being asked for say the 4th or 9th characters in my security password when calling a bank, I always find myself counting on my fingers.
I'm not alone am i?
Disappointed the 1922 committee are waiting until 5 Sept to announce new Conservative leader (aka PM)
That's too late. The catastrophically high Oct price cap announcement a fortnight before will cause panic, DDs will already be rising. It's not enough time for ministers to act!
Do you remember the clarity of
- stay at home, protect the NHS, save lives
Now after today's latest announcements in England we seem to have
- eat out to help out
- don't socialise
- stop working at home, get back to the office
Not exactly clear cut.
Just had a cyclist swear horribly at me for having the temerity to be getting in his way, as I crossed the road under the green man, while he ran a red light.
This isn't an anti cycling tweet. It's anti dick head dangerous cyclists, who feel safety laws don't apply to them.
If that's all he's doing on energy - it is limited and won't impact the majority of households who will see a likely £1,300 average increase in year-on-year bills by October.
My head has sunk. I just hope there's a rabbit to come out of the hat.
#SpringStatement2022
A few people have asked me today about 'being political'. I am always political. I will always be political. My whole work campaigning for consumers is political.
Yet I try never to be party political. I am open minded to all parties & work and co-operate with many when asked.
Ps already hearing off the record briefings today from energy firms to try and sully my rep, by spinning nonesense, let's see if any papers fall for it
All the Queen's family seem to be rushing to see her. I suspect like many it brings sad memories of perhaps last moments with elderly loved ones. Wishing Her Majesty all strength, and the best to all who love her.
There is an obvious question.
This morning the PM had encouraged parents to send children to school. Now he says it's not safe to.
What changed in 12hrs? I accept this is fast moving, but surely the data was there already.
Now children have relinked unnecessarily for 1 day
We've a cost of living crisis of a scale not seen for nearly 50yrs.
Energy bills will rise to £3,000 in Oct. Food, mortgages, rents, transport & petrol prices are exploding
The Bank of England today warned economic outlook's deteriorated materially
And we've no Chancellor.
I found Rishi Sunak impressive just now. Still find it difficult to understand the magnitude of what they're doing right now and processing the whole thing.
WHAT IS
@10DowningStreet
SCARED OF?
Today the Chancellor makes his next big support scheme announcement. MSE & I've been explaining these for 10wks, with millions following our journalism
And again No10's just said "No, you CAN'T ask Q at the press conference"

Ps if you support the idea of the new PM joining me to discuss the cost of living, pls share the tweet ive just done about it (ie don't share this one, share the prior one inviting them 😊)

From next April the 45% top rate of tax (applies to those earning £150,000) will be scrapped. So the top rate will be the 40% higher rate threshold.
This means mega earners, pay the same rate as those on £50,000.

Not true Boris. The govt didn't adopt the Living Wage. It renamed the min wage 'the living wage' at a far lower level than the real
@LivingWageUK
It was a disgraceful brand theft of a worthy charity. Osborne should hang head in shame for it - so don't boast of it

My heart just sank doing my

phone in just then - as it does almost every time I hear 'energy bills' right now.
So many people understandably unable to process the scale of the increases and unable to meet the price. It is depressing and dangerous.
David Cameron truly left this country in the shit with his ill thought out referendum.
It was a black and white vote on a rainbow of issues, with neither path nor plan on what to do with a leave vote.
Politics at its worst. Leaving us with this intolerable political impasse
I'm sorry to post about energy right now, but this is important update, and may impact choices people are making right now. This is specifically about those on fixed tariffs.
The info on the rules for fixes may be changing...

Keir Starmer's forensic rather than aggressive parliamentary approach feels like it makes it far more difficult to avoid answering the questions - I hope this will lead to an improvement in the quality of the debate.
Congratulations

for the brilliant & impactful tweet/campaign over how inflation is regressive and hits poorest hardest
I've just heard of ur great result getting ONS to agree to bring back inflation by income decile stats. You are I hope, v proud of yourself!
I must admit I'm slightly confused by reducing our alert from 4 to 3.

NEWS: It gets worse!
I've just got uodated price cap predictions from
@CornwallInsight
.
The latest spike in year-ahead wholesale price means the OCT cap prediction is now UP 78% (so £3,500/yr on typical bills) & likely up again in Jan.
Its will be desperate. Intervention needed
Just to clarify in practice the £200 bill-credit 'loan' on all home elec bills in Oct.
- every bill will reduce by £200
- every bill after Apr 23 increases by £40/yr for 5yrs regardless of if you got the £200 or not.
Its a 1yr bill reduction followed by a 5yr compulsory levy.
I hate customer service lines that ALWAYS say, every time you ring (at any time in the day)... "sorry we are experiencing unusual call volumes".
No! You are experiencing normal call volumes you just don't resource your helpline adequately.
I don't understand the point of this tweet or of copying me in. If you're trying to start an argument I'm not biting. It's unnecessary, and if I may suggest would be best for all if you deleted.
I often discuss with my wife about people faces you would like to punch for no real reason.I know it's not fair, they maybe perfectly nice people. She has her list of faces.Martin Lewis is one of mine.He is most probably a nice guy. I am sure some people think the same about me

In May govt announced decent help based on predicted 42% rise in the Oct to Apr energy price cap (that'd take a typical bill to £2,800)

please could you change the website which is giving MISLEADING information about the NI rise. It says it is a 1.25% rise. That is not correct for most it is a rise of just over 10%. The rate is rising by 1.25% points. See below
