One of the things which surprised me most was the access locals & foreigners had to government officials. It’s a true open door policy. I could walk into the provincial government compound and immediately meet with the governor within 5 minutes of my arrival.

A lot of the guys, many of whom are 18-25, are hilarious and fun to talk to. As I left Kabul for Shia majority regions, local commanders all offered me their homes and food as I traveled. I was even invited to the local volleyball games!

The Shia areas saw much less enforcement of “virtue laws”. Taliban authorities were mostly transplants from other regions and didn’t want to cause too much controversy. So women’s faces could be seen there. Things were very relaxed.

We continued on past Salang and through the mountains making good time. Pretty much all the cars in Afghanistan are 1997 Corollas in various states of disrepair. Their windshields covered in faux parking stickers & slogans.

Beginning with the next morning, the rest of my time as an “involuntary guest” of the local Taliban unit didn’t cease to deteriorate. Of the dozen men in the unit, 2 were Pashtun and tried to help us whenever they could. The rest were Tajiks and other northern ethnicities.

We were led to their compound a few hundred meters away. Their truck parked behind us and the gate was locked. We were taken to the only room in the compound with A/C to meet the mullah. He claimed my visa was fake & that I didn’t have the proper permits to travel.
