Aya to win! Greyhounds always.
In all seriousness, a greyhound winning Crufts could do so much for all the retired ones needing homes out there 🙏
My Y10s smashing goal free problems- I'm really enjoying the questions they create (and being picky about the wording of their questions!)

After many months of blood, sweat and tears, I can finally say that all of the questions and answers for Entry 1, 2, 3, Level 1 and 2 maths have been finalised. 🥳🥳🥳
Y11 revision/study skills evenings inspiration please! Looking for any ideas or people with previous experience of running a similar event for students and parents/carers to share any wisdom :)

Department consistent methods: Factorising quadratics.
I avoided this one for quite some time as I thought it would cause arguments 😅, instead we were unanimous in our decision. What do you think it was?

One of my favourite things is delivering CPD to ITTs. Yesterday was all about questioning strategies so of course one of the main talking points was cold calling, which is apparently my trade mark these days...
(Many bits borrowed from

and
@m_chiles
ofc)

A friend of mine had the observer sneakily take the plenary off her desk and gave it to the highest ability child in the room 30mins in to the lesson. He answered it correctly. Lesson was therefore deemed ‘not challenging enough and Required Improvement’ 🙃
How do I teach solving from a graph better please?
Every year I try to emphasise the skill better, every year I make more bespoke worksheets, I draw sketch of graphs evertime I solve equations... every year students forget it 🙃

Not to cause controversy but I'm interested in speaking to secondary schools who either have:
-a complete no homework policy
-a policy where departments/teachers can set as little or as much hw as they wish
-do not sanction students for non completion
Direct message or replies!
20 minute briefings actually turning out to be the perfect amount of time to discuss consistent methods and discuss how we would introduce new content in Maths. Today was dividing by a decimal, unanimous votes for number 3 👏

It was my ITT’s last day as well today. We’ve had two smashing trainees this year and I’m really proud of everything they’ve achieved.
Bias towards Uni of Sheff students, me? Yes.
Thanks

Q

of the evening:
I might be going mad but I'm considering merging our two lowest classes, creating a lower attaining mixed ability class. I have concerns that sometimes the smaller class sizes make for more passive students and promotes dependency on the teacher... 1/2
Bagged ourselves a fab ECT for September today and then went on my memories to find that I got my first teaching role 9 years ago today too 😱
#ifeelold
@hartmaths
We've implemented this alongside using etymology/morphology over the last 2 years with success. We've found that a blank table that the teacher completes/models on as they explain works best for cognitive load and promotes a slowed and progressive explanation.
How do you use exam papers as practice in lessons for Y11?
What methods do you think help prepare students best especially within a 1hr lesson and considering classes who aren't expected to answer every question e.g. aiming for a 6 on Higher.

Shared Mathsbot completion tables today in our department meeting which was a real hit for improving fluency and making links- fantastically interactive for the classes needs too as you can remove columns, add and remove answers.
Thanks

Is anybody aware of any scientific calculators that are suitable for students who are significantly visually impaired please?
We have a great student who requires size 26 font, I'm concerned she won't be able to access work that requires a scientific calculator in the future 1/2
School holidays are for holidays.
Have I been singing songs from Frozen constantly and randomly getting emotional at Austrian scenery throughout the day? Maybe.

Request the scripts and use them in lessons, get students to spot the errors and correct them, it will highlight to them how easy it is to drop down a grade due to silly mistakes and it works as an exercise to teach them how to actually check their work.
Just marking my Y10s formative unit tests and every student has given the worded problems a real try; something they wouldn’t have done at all in September 👏

OCR Maths Higher tier advice- are there any high frequency topics or styles of Q? Currently I’m thinking I need to support my student with answering higher marking Qs than they’ve been previously used to as there’s a more 4-6 marks than other boards. Other thoughts welcome?!

You mean my scatter diagrams lesson where we plot “number of pens that have exploded this year” vs “number of students’ behaviour points”?
A guaranteed strong correlation coefficient every time.
I'd like to read about improving student engagement in Maths for low attainers, something along the lines of

but subject specific... Also interested in looking at how teachers view low attaining classes too.

Observation/coaching tip: Colour code or underline improvements from the last area for development so that the teacher can celebrate progress and observe that they are responding to feedback.
I use this frequently for ITTs and beyond.

Recently taught vectors- started with translations recap, then column vectors with lots of drawing, because we did this the classes really got the links to the more abstract vector geometry- also linked them to gradients which worked really well.
Loving our Bitesized Pedagogy briefings- 10mins of showcasing great strategies by great teachers spotted during learning walks and Coaching.
Today

showed us all how the 'I do, You do' strategy can motivate students through their own success 👏
Absolutely nothing to do with teaching post, but want to share this literally everywhere: in the spirit of this year’s goal (going for everything even if and especially I’m terrified), I’ve just become a qualified Padi diver 😬

Repetitive retrieval but I'm very against the 'last lesson, last week...' format (see recent tweets from

I like this! I think students need to be exposed to both ways so that it doesn't put them off either way. I've recently being used CF exam questions that are horizontal which got me thinking I need to interleave different presentation of Qs in tasks more often.
Massive believer that ITTs improve T&L from within: host teachers get to observe frequently, reflect on their own practice during feedback, gain new ideas, act as role models demonstrating best practice.
Hosting ITTs = best CPD going.

I'm unbelievably late in retweeting this but we had some excellent resit results across Y12 and 13- some great examples of hard working students and teachers 👏
Started the day by accidentally smashing a bottle of red wine in reprographics (looked like a murder scene), finished it rescuing a rabbit in the car park with some equally animal loving colleagues. I think I did some teaching in between but it’s all a blur 🙃
Marking and feedback for summative assessments in Maths- something we’ll be exploring on INSET… what do you do?
I’m a big fan of scrawling over the MS as I mark so I remember specific reasons students lost marks and can make my feedback targeted better than QLA…
I’m making a lesson on composite and dual bar charts- any Geography or Science teachers able to guide me to some questions for their subjects please that I could interleave?
