BREAKING: A 2nd cow evaded capture after escaping from an LA slaughterhouse last week and was discovered Wednesday morning at a park in La Puente, CA.
This afternoon, we welcomed her home to our Acton Sanctuary where she joined fellow escapee, June B. Free. Updates to come!
Bonnie was on the run for nearly a year after she escaped slaughter & fled to the forest, finding refuge among a group of deer. Thanks to support from a compassionate neighbor, Bonnie beat the odds & joined the Farm Sanctuary family 4 years ago today!
Happy second rescue anniversary to our playful Spurlino!
Just like dogs, farm animals take play VERY seriously. Playtime fosters curiosity, innovation, and vital social skills for our farm animal friends.
Having the chance to play and simply be a cow is SO important. 💚
Happy 10th rescue anniversary, Safran! 🐄
10 years ago, Farm Sanctuary President and Co-founder
@GeneBaur
rescued Safran, aka "Saffy" from a dairy farm where he'd be sold for veal.
Now, he's a herd leader who spreads joy to all with his curious spirit. 💚
Seven years ago, Frank was on the run in New York City after a daring escape from a slaughterhouse, leaving him terrified in a strange place.
Now, he's living his best life at sanctuary. Although his size can be intimidating, he's a sweet guy who loves to be brushed & scratched.
In honor of
#CowAppreciationDay
, meet Frank. After escaping a slaughterhouse, he fled for his life through NYC. Police labelled him "vicious," but a better descriptor would've been "terrified."
Today, he's a well-respected leader of his herd & a hero for farm animals everywhere.
Cows have the nickname “grass puppies” for a reason: they love running and playing just as dogs do! Here, Bellamy shows us how she likes to have fun. 💚
We love this video of former Farm Sanctuary resident Bruce living the life! Bruce was born on a beef farm, & had all gone as planned — he likely would have been slaughtered between 14-36 months. Instead, he’s living a life full of love & care. 💚

BREAKING: One of the 40 cows who escaped a Pico Rivera, CA slaughterhouse on Tuesday night will be able to live a lifetime of freedom at our Acton Sanctuary! Thanks to
@Diane_Warren
&
@simonereyes
for making this happy ending possible. More updates soon.
Born unable to walk on a farm that raised cows for meat, Howard’s prospects were grim—but his extra needs turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The farmer relinquished him & he eventually made his way to us—4 years ago TODAY!
Watch his inspiring transformation at Sanctuary:
Peggy was born unable to walk, but after months of surgeries & physical therapy at Cornell, this fighter is back at Farm Sanctuary, settling in with a herd of her own.
Every life is worth saving. Welcome home, Peggy. 💚
Faith was born with ovaries that didn't function, making it impossible for her to become pregnant. She was considered “useless” by the dairy industry. 11 years ago, she joined the
@FarmSanctuary
family, where she enjoys life, liberty & the pursuit of apples. 💚
ICYMI: One day after his Oscars win, Joaquin Phoenix helped to liberate a cow & her calf from an LA slaughterhouse and bring them to
@farmsanctuary
. Thanks to the work of
@laanimalsave
, who secured their release, they will live the rest of their lives in peace. 📽️: Shaun Monson
We're heartbroken to share that we said goodbye to our dear friend, Betty pig — the spirited, lovable queen of the main pig barn. Betty will forever be more than what the industry tried to label her — she’s an individual, a sister, a daughter, and a friend. We miss her dearly.
Stop scrolling & enjoy a moment of calm with Blake & Moochelle. ✨ Cows are sensitive creatures who take care of their peers by grooming & protecting them. They depend on each other extensively for emotional support & relieve stress by seeking the company of a tranquil friend. 💚
Faith cow was born unable to become pregnant &, therefore, couldn't produce milk. Much like her male counterparts, she was considered “useless” by the dairy industry.
12 years ago today, Faith joined our family, where she enjoys life, liberty, & the pursuit of apples. 💚
As a calf born into the dairy industry, Gary was considered “worthless” as soon as he entered this world. Since males can't produce milk, farmers see them as of no value.
Here, we know Gary is invaluable — and worthy of love, friendship, and a fulfilling life.
Diane endured five difficult years on a dairy farm before finding freedom at Farm Sanctuary. On
#WorldMilkDay
today, we're celebrating dairy survivors like her, who are so much more than a commodity. 🐮💚
Once destined for slaughter, Cameron is now safe and loved — living the full life he deserves because someone put compassion first. In honor of his sixth rescue anniversary, here's a throwback to his piglet days:
Meet Dixon, our California sanctuary's newest (and jumpiest!) calf! 💚Often, dairy farmers sell male calves for veal or beef; in this case, Dixon was put up on Craigslist for free. Thanks to a kind rescuer, Dixon made it to
@FarmSanctuary
, where he will live the rest of his life.
Foie gras survivors like Matisse are some of the sickest animals we care for. He arrived at our NY Sanctuary dirty, terrified, & ill. During his health exam, he flapped his wings—likely for the first time ever—& seemed so proud.
9 years later, he's free to simply be himself. 💚
Exciting update!
Earlier this year, we rescued ten cows from Vermont facing euthanasia, & we’re happy to announce that four found homes at Dominion Farm Animal Sanctuary, part of our Farm Animal Adoption Network.
Thanks to everyone involved for making this rescue possible!
"I can't bear to think of animals suffering, yet across Europe, hundreds of millions of farm animals are confined in cages on factory farms." -
@rickygervais
"Since veal calves are largely provided by the dairy industry, as a byproduct of breeding milk cows, the two industries are inextricably linked. Supporting dairy means the support of the veal industry and the killing of thousands of animals."
Dixon is one of the lucky ones. This jumpy boy, unlike most male calves discarded by the dairy industry, has the chance to grow up—and he’ll spend the rest of his life valued as someone, not something.
We're celebrating Norman's 2nd rescue anniversary! 🐮💚
Born on a dairy farm, Norman could've faced slaughter, but his life was spared. As he grew, he needed a herd and with Farm Sanctuary's help — he found one!
Now, Norman's known for his gentle soul among his fellow cows.
Otis and Freddie are former Farm Sanctuary residents who secured placement through our Farm Animal Adoption Network (FAAN)! Though it’s always hard to see friends move on, they're positively thriving in their new home — & the two remain close pals today. 💚

In case you’ve been wondering about George, he’s spending his days napping in the sun, getting belly-rubs from caretakers, and hanging with his potbellied pig pals. 💚
“Cows are extremely affectionate—they love to groom each other, they love to groom their human friends.” 💚
We love this sweet bonding moment between caregiver Bianca and Cowboy:
It was with heavy hearts that we said goodbye to Sweet Pea cow over the holidays. She lived into her 20s—which is so rare for cows like her—& passed peacefully of old age.
While we’re sad to lose her, we’re heartened that her retirement years were filled with honor & love. 💚
Sometimes, it’s the small moments at
@FarmSanctuary
that take your breath away -- like watching these two brothers, who fell off a transport truck on their way to a veal slaughter facility earlier this year, snuggling in the grass without a care in the world. 💚
We think Isaac steer might actually be a goat at heart—in fact, this 2,500-pound gentle giant is afraid of most other cattle. Isaac has many goat pals, but his B(G)FF is Maxie—and he likes to show his love by showering her with big bovine kisses.
Bruce is off ISO! When this little chonk came in, he had rotavirus—a contagious virus that causes diarrhea—so we had to keep him on strict iso until the disease cleared. Luckily, he got the all-clear on one of the most beautiful days our NY Sanctuary has seen in a while!
We rescued Dennis from a backyard butcher in 2015, where more than 170 animals were wasting away amidst filth and debris. In the years since, we’ve watched him transform from a shy, frightened steer to an outgoing, charming friend. 💚
Foie gras survivors like Matisse are some of the sickest animals we care for. He arrived at our NY Sanctuary dirty, terrified, & ill. During his health exam, he flapped his wings—likely for the first time ever—& seemed so proud.
9 years later, he's free to simply be himself.
Today is
#WorldFarmAnimalsDay
, a day to honor & give visibility to some of the most abused animals on earth.
By choosing a diet free of animal products, we can help alleviate the amount of harm inflicted on these intelligent, emotional animals:
Last week we introduced you to Julia—a pregnant breeding sow who endured abuse on a factory farm before we rescued her. She gave birth after arriving at Farm Sanctuary and, today, her piglets turn 8! 🎈 Julia spent 6 happy, peaceful years with them before passing away in 2018.
One of the best moments of sanctuary is when our residents finally feel safe to rest — showing we have earned their trust. 💚
Have a relaxing
#weekend
! 🐷 💤
Once destined for slaughter, Cameron is safe and able to live out his full life because someone put compassion first. We love this
#throwback
to his perky piglet days:
It's hard to believe that little guys like Rhino are brought into the world just to end up on someone's dinner plate. We're so glad that didn't end up being his fate. 💚
"Eric & Jane were best friends as piglets and have been reunited in old age where they’ve gotten right back to loving on each other." — Farm Sanctuary caregiver Grace Garner
There are few things George loves more than a good belly rub. 💚
Emotionally sensitive, playful, and inquisitive, pigs are not much different from the companion animals we share our homes with. They are here with us, not for us.
It was wonderful having Joaquin Phoenix & Rooney Mara at our Sanctuary to visit the turkeys!
Said Phoenix & Mara: “Turkeys are emotional, intelligent & social animals. It’s chilling that more than 68m turkeys will be brutally slaughtered & eaten during the holiday months." (1/3)
They’re safe now. These goats were found terrified on the subway tracks in Brooklyn yesterday. Today, they're on their way to freedom at our flagship sanctuary in Watkins Glen, NY, thanks to
@NYCACC
, our friends Tracey and Jon Stewart, and our talented Farm Sanctuary rescue team.
Henry (left) and Lola (right) turn 7 years old today! 🎈🎊 We hope these baby pictures of them from 2015 brighten your day (because we all know there are few things cuter than baby goats!).
The day Billy was born was supposed to be his last. On top of being a "worthless" dairy male, he was also very tiny. Billy's farmer decided the best thing to do would be to kill him with a sledgehammer. Luckily, a friend intervened & Billy has been with us 12 wonderful years!
NEW RESCUE: Meet Bruce, Farm Sanctuary's newest (& floofiest) resident!
Bruce was born on a beef farm—and had all gone to plan, he likely would have been slaughtered between 14-36 mos of age. Now safe at Farm Sanctuary, Bruce will be honored as an individual, not a commodity. 💚
Go, Pietro, go!
It's hard to believe that this rambunctious calf was almost put to death at a dairy for a broken leg. Now, he enjoys a carefree life running through our Sanctuary pastures.
Cows are family—and their lives mean so much more than the milk they die to make.
After spending two decades being used as a breeding cow, Sweet Pea finally found peace, safety, & a grand retirement at Farm Sanctuary. We've been caring for this senior Scottish Highland since October 2018, and cherish every day we get with her! 💚
