For folks who've been asking for a link to my film award-winning Sundance film IMELDA made in 2004 as the former First Lady was just returning from exile and Marcos Jr reinventing himself as a political figure, here it is. Feel free to share widely.
We are Sundance-bound!!! Thank you
@sundancefest

Full circle moment. In 2004, I released my first film, IMELDA. Jesse Robredo screened it in Naga. My family are Nagaenos, it's where we spent our summers when we were children. It meant so much to my mother, who attended the event. Mayor Jesse (RIP) wrote an incredible message.1/
Making a film about one of the bravest and most complicated women I've come to know, meeting her childhood friends, sisters, parents, colleagues and everyone in between is such a trip. And this is what I get to do. As a filmmaker. For real. What a privilege.
@mariaressa
We made this video in collab with
@ICFJ
. All that stands between Nobel laureate
@MariaRessa
and a lengthy jail sentence is a Philippine Supreme Court judgment that could drop any day. “You prepare for the worst and hope for the best.” Watch and share this widely.

When the lies can't catch up with the truth, then that's how we lose our democracy. Basically what
@mariaressa
has been saying since 2016. It's here. It's real. Listen.
Hearing the Philippine National Anthem performed in a roomful of Americans in the US makes me weep. Especially as rendered by this Fil Am teenager. And most esp after the heartbreaking month of May. (At the naming of the Toms River HS North auditorium in honor of

BREAKING. The First Division of the Philippine Court of Tax Appeals acquitted Nobel Laureate Maria Ressa and Rappler Holdings Corporation of the tax evasion charges filed by the Duterte government. Story to follow

Don’t Shut Up is more than a rallying cry for journalists: it's a call to action for anyone who uses their voice for good + speaks truth to power. What compels you to speak? What drives you to create change? Tell us why you

Imagine the only female Nobel Laureate this year, only the 18th woman to receive the Peace Prize ever, AND the first Filipino to win it (without being part of a group).
So big takeaway: Dutz threatens to nationalize the utility companies and telecoms owned by the hated oligarchs BUT can the private sector take care of this COVID thing before they exit the stage? Did I get that right?
As a filmmaker, I always hope that my films are both timely and timeless. But it's so amazing that this film gets more timely as the year progresses. And getting more so every day. This you cannot plan. And it's not necessarily a good thing.

The press in the Philippines was amazing. They were always there, shining the light, covering

whenever she got arrested or had to appear in court.

This is one of the best interviews
@mariaressa
has done about her new book How To Stand Up To A Dictator. When a question or two makes Maria stop, you know the interviewer has actually done their homework - that is to say, read the book!
@TalkEasyPod
So what is
@_athousandcuts
about? It's about journalism, disinformation, authoritarianism, democracy - as told through the eyes of an iconic bigger than life journalist, a general, and a pop star turned politician. It's complicated and layered. It's timely and timeless.
Wish I read more books this year. Ending the year with a non-fiction book that will make me leave the platforms once and for all. And starting the year with Ernaux and Keegan.
