When tragedy occurs, when lives are needlessly lost, I try to follow the Grinch rule and allow the pain to increase the size of my heart and grow my compassion, rather than shrink it.
Virginia argues teacher is not entitled to extra compensation after being shot because the shooting was a "hazard of the job." The school board's attorney says it's an "unfortunate reality" that teaching is "not without its dangers."
“I’m the same Megan Rapinoe you’ve known for years… I haven’t experienced over-policing, racial profiling or the sight of a family member’s body lying dead in the street, but I can't stand idly by while others have to deal with that kind of heartache.”
A reminder that SCOTUS struck down a MA law that created buffer zones around clinics to protect people from angry protestors. Scalia: "Protecting ppl from speech they don't want to hear is not a function of the 1st Amendment."
NEW: Justice Brett Kavanaugh had to exit through the rear of Morton's on Wednesday night after DC protestors showed up out front. A Morton's rep told me: "Politics … should not trample the freedom at play of the right to congregate and eat dinner."
@tedcruz
Aren't you the same guy who called for a boycott of Nike and a boycott of Harley Davidson? Didn't Trump call for a boycotts of Macy's and Apple? You both felt Colin Kaepernick should lose his job for exercising free speech, right?
Couple things to remember: Antifa is not an organized group. You don't "join" Antifa, which means there's a chance you can be labelled Antifa by law enforcement simply because you are protesting. 1/2
I just met a white person in the park. We started talking about racism. They said: This is systemic. So, there's not a lot I can do.
WHITE PEOPLE: There is so much you can do. There is so much. And not just going to a protest with a sign.
McBath's teenage son was murdered at a gas station by a white man who thought the boy's music was too loud. His mom has now taken a seat that has been GOP since Gingrich in 1978.
Brett Kavanaugh in confirmation hearing: "[Roe] is an important precedent... [Roe and Casey] have been reaffirmed many times. Casey is precedent on precedent."
The FBI used an undercover cop to spy on housing & racial justice groups, dropping an investigation into a neo-Nazi to do so. That Nazi later killed 4, wounded 25 in mass shooting at Q Club

John Roberts in confirmation hearing: "[Roe] is settled as a precedent of the court, entitled to respect under principles of stare decisis. It is settled."
Samuel Alito in confirmation hearing: "When someone becomes a judge, you really have to put aside the things that you did as a lawyer...I would approach the question with an open mind."
Last year, a young Black man was unlocking his front door, bringing Subway sandwiches home, when a deputy shot him 6 times in the back and butt. He died. The deputy has now been charged with murder.
Found a note on my little free pantry today. It costs me about $500 a month to keep it stocked because that's how many families near me are hurting and hungry.
My friends in media, we do not need dozens of interviews with Jessica Krug in order to get inside her thinking or hear her story. Seriously, please don't Dolezal this woman.
Today, hundreds of public radio employees, past and current, join together to demand reform to our industry.
Please read our open letter: "An Anti-Racist Future: A Vision and Plan for the Transformation of Public Media"
What does this mean? It means that the chances that innocent people will be labelled as terrorists and abused by the system may rise exponentially now.
Second, when you are labelled as a terrorist by the US govt, your rights can be severely curtailed. The rights you have taken for granted may not apply anymore if you are designated as a terrorist.
"In 2000, Union Pacific employed 50,000 people and generated $11.8 billion. Today, Union Pacific, employs almost 18,000 less people, but manages to earn 85% more in revenue each year."
And yet, engineers are not allowed a single sick day. Shifts sometimes last 70-80 hours.
NEW: We poured through the financial filings of the major railroads.
Their profit margins have nearly tripled at the same time as spending on workers' wages and benefits dropped drastically.
They're now refusing to provide workers a single sick day.
Anyone who uses "NPR" as a stand-in for public radio, not realizing that it's just a network like PRI, APM, Pacifica, Native Voice, PRE, etc., should perhaps not be pretending they understand the complicated issue that is public media funding.
PLEASE NOTE! I left something out when I cut and paste the Barrett comment. Here's the end of that quote: "I'm answering a lot of questions about Roe...which I think indicates Roe doesn't fall in that category [of super precedent]."
@UncededClothing
See this man weep, this honored elder who fought for this nation and has dedicated years to helping vulnerable youth... seeing him cry breaks my heart into a million pieces.
@tough_schmidt_
Do your job, Tom Carper. We pay you $174,000 per year, plus gold standard benefits, You are now worth more than $4 million dollars. Do your job.
@SenatorCarper
Also note, that describing Roe as precedent does not mean they promised not to overturn it. Even describing it as "settled law" does not constitute a promise not to overturn it.
If you are protesting, the only way you can feel safe is if you trust law enforcement to correctly identify and pursue only those people who intend to inflict harm to people and property,
Next step up - speak up when you hear microaggressions. One person in my neighborhood said, "I don't see color." What if I weren't the person pushing back on that? What if it were you? What if you did your homework and you were prepared to respond to this?
Josh Hawley's home state paper:
"No one other than Trump himself is more responsible for Wednesday’s coup attempt at the U.S. Capitol than one Joshua David Hawley, the 41-year-old junior senator from Missouri, who put out a fundraising appeal while the siege was underway."
A white man who deliberately sped his car through a crowd of racial injustice protesters, telling the judge they needed an "attitude adjustment," will avoid prison and have the incident erased from his record if he stays out of trouble for three years.
Next: STOP AVOIDING THE CONVERSATION, please. I know it's upsetting. I know you hate arguments. But, you know who has the best chance of persuading your racist Uncle Bob? A white person that he knows and loves. THAT'S YOU. Do the work. Talk to him and keep talking.
Next step: Make it more painful to be racist than to default to the racist norms that we're used to. You can't realistically change someone else's beliefs, but you can make it more comfortable to be anti-racist than racist. That's just behavioral science.
Do you want to do the minimum? Want to do the least and then get back to your life (no disrespect - life is tough). Write to your political reps about criminal justice reform, voting reform, reparations, etc.
YES racism is systemic. But, you know what makes up social systems? Lots and lots of people. You are one of those data points. Be the one standing on the slide of justice, with all your might. If enough people move (through action!) to the other side, the scales will tip.
One last thing - This is your work, my white friends. Race is invented. It's not biological. It's not scientific. It was created by your ancestors in order to justify the theft of wealth and of human beings. You didn't start this, but we need you to end it. WE NEED YOU.
One step further? Expand your social circle and your circle of work colleagues. Don't share job opps and networks with only white people. Actively become inclusive.
You know who doesn't (statistically) get punished when they push back on racist comments and practices at work? White people of power and influence. If that's you, then you must speak up. You cannot relax. You must be watchful and ready to step in every time.
Another step? Anti-poverty work. The system has worked for centuries to keep people of color in poverty. When people have money, they spend it on food, on housing, on education. What amount can you give that might actually represent sacrifice? Not just how much you can spare.
When racist comments are made at work, the people most likely to speak up are workers of color. They are also the most likely to be punished for speaking up. To get bad performance reviews, to be called "unlikeable" and "difficult."
Another thing: Please do your homework. If you have a few hours, I suggest you start here, with
@SceneOnRadio
's podcast "Seeing White." Please don't ask others to educate you. YOU HAVE TIME. You binge watch shows, so you can spend a few hours on this.
Jared followed the Trump campaign in 2016. He was among the first to say Trump could win. So, this thread is especially notable. His book on the 2016 campaign is excellent, btw, and a great read.
My conversations with Trump supporters have changed recently. After initial pushback, they’re admitting he’s too concerned with himself, that he’s a volatile rich guy helping other rich guys. They admit he’s a weapon, but they’re tiring of him.
The facade is breaking.
Many people think these comments from the justices are evidence of lying. They are not. Describing a decision as precedent does not mean "should remain law forever". Precedents are often overturned.
Part of the power imbalance in public radio comes from job insecurity. I've never seen an industry that used so many temp workers and interns. During my entire career at
@NPR
, they never hired me. I was a temp contractor the entire time, walking on eggshells.
I’m SO excited for you to watch the new trailer for

starring Will Smith and featuring the song “Be Alive” by
@Beyonce
. It’s in theaters and streaming exclusively on

November 19.
@blakehounshell
"The synagogue placed beehives along the wall, but then found the hives destroyed and the bees dead. “He could have picked up the phone & said, ‘Hey, those beehives are on my property.’ We would have moved them." Children at the synagogue wept when they heard the news."
This is a bombshell.
Absolutely incredible reporting from
@propublica
. They are nonprofit and use donation money to do courageous and vital reporting.
Here's another thing: Stop before you defend the powerful white guy. I'm not saying that he's not worth defending. Just pause and think it through. Question yourself. Why are you defending him? Why do you think he's trustworthy? Don't make "defend the white guy" your default.
@soledadobrien
Grover Norquist predicted the GOP would pick up 33 House seats, Oz would win PA.
Armstrong Williams said the GOP would pick up 30 in the House, Oz would win PA, Bolduc would win NH.
Matt Schlapp said GOP would pick up 38 House seats (!!!), Oz, Bolduc, and Lake would win.
Again, this is hardly a "that'll teach her" moment. This is absolutely tragic and our nation has to come to grips with the multiple ways that we failed Olivia. I'm so sorry for her family.
Some pundits don't seem to understand that millions of American women are angry, that anger drove the largest protest march in US history, and helped drive the 2018 results. When you say anger isn't good look for Warren, you're saying millions of US women don't look good.
One last easy thing you can do: Stop spending money on all-white things. Don't attend conferences with all-white panels. Don't buy tickets to all-white movies. Don't feed the white supremacists machine. If you can't fight, at least you can choose not to support it.
This piece is breathtaking: "When 19 children & 2 teachers are killed in a town of 15,000, the math works like this: You either loved one of the victims or you know someone who loved one of the victims."
In line to buy coffee: told a friend who was running late, "Don't sweat it." Woman behind me says, "I just want to let you know that you shouldn't say that. Some people like my cousin have anhidrosis and can't sweat, so language like that is really harmful to them."
?????
Georgia, one of original 7 states to form the Confederacy, where the KKK was reborn at Stone Mtn, home to the largest Confederate monument in the world, will send a black man to the Senate to represent MLK's home town. Warnock will be only the 11th Black senator in US history.
If racism seems too huge to combat for you, for a white liberal who believes in equity and fairness and justice, imagine how enormous it looks to a person of color. And yet we still fight. We need you with us. Please don't throw up your hands. We can't do this without you.
Anti-racism work is a bit like litter. You see a piece of garbage on the ground & walk by, thinking, "I didn't litter." But someone has to pick it up. it was your mom, kid, partner, who threw it down, you should pick it up so some POC doesn't have to clean up after your family.
Even someone as light skinned as I am has been thwarted and delayed and punished and abused for decades because of my color. I need all of you to step up now. This fight has taken all of my life. How much time can you spare to help me? How many hours a week can you commit?
My anti-racist work has led to work supporting trans people, disabled people, immigrants. When you begin to open your heart to others and get past the "I've suffered, too!" mentality, you find no limit to the expansion of your love. Your mind can continue to open exponentially.
That's what "woke" means. It means someone who's been sleeping comfortably, nestled in the warm blankets of racism, but who wakes up and sees that people of color are holding the weight of the bed on their backs. Wake up!
Listen, person who just called me dumb on Twitter, that insult doesn't work on me. I know I'm smart, so it doesn't land. You need to hit me where I'm sensitive because of insecurity. Like, tell me I spent too much money on my Sennheiser mic or I don't look good in hats.
How do you watch 7 men get charged for a plot to kidnap a governor in October and now say you "can't believe" a bunch of like-minded people would storm the Capitol? How is that surprising? How could law enforcement be unprepared for that?
Let me be brutally honest here: My family has married light-skinned people for generations, in a racist bid to protect their children. That means I have a more privilege than others and a heavier duty to fight the battles and devote myself to a more just future.
@soledadobrien
Alice Stewart got it mostly wrong.
Bill Press was pretty darn accurate.
Steve Shepard was also accurate.
Nate Silver was "convinced" by arguments for a GOP sweep
Emily Ekans said we should expect a red wave, Dave Wasserman said the same.
One police officer: "They furnished [slaves with] food to put on their table and all they had to do was f***ing work. And now we give ‘em all those things and don’t have to f***ing work,”
West Georgia police chief, officer told to resign after bodycam video shows them using racial slurs
"It seems to me they [slaveowners] gave them food and shelter and clothes and all they had to do was work." among other things
Disgusting.
