The DOJ is suing
@elonmusk
and
@SpaceX
for focusing their hiring on US citizens and permanent residents.
Do you know who else advertises that only US citizens can apply for a job? The DOJ.
My takeaway is that a large number of people HATE the cultural left (not the econ left) and are willing to put up with almost anything, including incompetence, chaos, corruption and bad policy, to signal their views loud and clear.
Insanity. Fracking has made the US the world leader in oil and natural gas production. Created trillions in wealth for producers and consumers. Made us less dependent on the Middle East. *Reduced* our carbon emissions. Fracking is American ingenuity at it's very best. 🇺🇸
Robert Smith the billionaire who paid off the debt of Morehouse College’s graduating class? Three to seven times a year he is stopped by police as he drives himself to his private jet at the airport in Texas.
After a rocket body impacted the Moon last year, NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter was able to snap a surprising view of the impact site. Unexpectedly, the crater is actually two craters and may indicate that the rocket body had large masses at each end:
Google once had the goal to “organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful.”
Now they have become a woke censor that hides, denies, and refuses to provide information.
What makes the FDAs failure to approve more rapid antigen tests even more galling is that the test being sold cheaply in the Amsterdam supermarket is the Flowflex, an American test made by Acon Labs in San Diego.
Home, self-administered, ~15 minute wait COVID tests available in an Amsterdam supermarket for about $3.50 each. I don’t understand why we *still* don’t have these in the US!
The US is still requiring a virus test to enter the US but not proof of vaccination.
We have testing passports but not vaccine passports. Ridiculous.
Vaccination is cheaper, more convenient and more effective.
Vaccination should supersede any test requirement.
In Germany you can get rapid COVID tests for less than a dollar each at the supermarket. Britain hands out 14-packs for free. Canada is giving them to small employers.
In the US we have approved only a handful of rapid tests and they are expensive.
At interim analysis, overwhelming efficacy necessitated stopping the trial for ethical considerations:
389 people who got Paxlovid: 3 hospitalizations, 0 deaths
385 people who got placebo: 27 hospitalizations, 7 deaths

These vaccine passports segregate people and strip them of their freedom to travel internationally. Vaccinations are important, and I encourage everyone to get the Covid vaccine, but how would you feel if international travel also required other vaccinations?
Broken clock and all that but Sinema is correct. The US 1500 hour rule is too long. Europe and the UK start to permit (co)-pilots with 250 hours and it's fine. US rule before 2009 was 250 hours.
Sen. Kyrsten Sinema is holding up a major bill unless it includes her proposal to require less training for airline pilots.
Sen. Tammy Duckworth, an ex-pilot, says Sinema will have 'blood on her hands' if it passes.
Why would anyone argue for less training for pilots? Thread.
As home prices continue to soar in California,
@toniatkins
and Senate Democrats want to try a new approach: spending $10 billion to help families buy homes. Details on the new proposal here -
The United Kingdom has dropped ALL COVID entry requirements as has Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland and many others.
The US test requirement is an expensive waste of time and effort. Time to end it. Now.
GPT4 gets a 0 on Steven Landsbrug's undergrad econ exam. But damn, Steven's questions are tricky.
Not hard computationally but you really have to think like an economist!
Emotions sell. “To monetise the insight, the Data Science Group created an AI machine-learning algorithm to predict which emotions articles would evoke and sells this insight to advertisers, who can choose from 18 emotions…”

My sister lives in London. This is her stockpile of FREE tests. Her son’s school tried to give her more today. She declined. Each box has 7 tests. She has 16 boxes. 112 tests. The US has failed.
REMINDER: if one in ten American households raised a 1/2 acre garden and kept 35 laying hens, there would be no industrial egg or vegetable production (level one)
We truly live in the dumbest timeline.
A French restaurant says it received insults and threats from customers who thought its signature Quebecois dish poutine was named after Putin
On a panel I said we need to vaccinate the world for humanitarian, foreign policy and self-interested reasons.
@ASlavitt
quipped. "The world needs to vaccinate the United States."
Sadly, he is not wrong. We have fallen from
#2
most vaccinated country to now
#38
and falling.
Go to lunch with
@tylercowen
. He says Putin will invade Ukraine today. Much disagreement and push back around the table. Come back from lunch. Putin has invaded Ukraine.
CEO pay has risen because firms are much larger now so CEO decisions matter more and there is greater competition for talent. Similarly, actors are paid more now not because they are “better” actors but because they reach more people.
What a jerk. No homeowner complained. These were "sting" operations that encouraged a house painter to also lay some tile and then arrested the handyperson for not having a tile laying occ. license.
Sheriff: “We have arrested 118 people in an investigation we called, ‘Operation House Hunters.’ These 118 con men & women were posing as contractors & preying on innocent homeowners in Hillsborough County, who were just looking to repair or improve their home.”
In 1961, thousands of students rioted at Harvard and had to be dispersed by police using tear gas.
The cause of the riot: the students wanted their diplomas printed in Latin not English.
The riots went on for days.
NYTimes--Shall we write about how Bayes rule helped rationalists to conclude early that SARS-COV-II was going to be very serious? Nah.....let's insinuate it has something to do with white supremacy instead.
I have been shouting this from the rooftops for months. We have more than 30 million doses of AZ vaccine stockpiled. The world needs it. We have yet to approve it and don’t need it any longer. Let it go! Vaccinate the world. Good to see msm get this story.
Taxi drivers attack Uber drivers and Uber is the bad guy? Ridiculous. Travis Kalanick is one of the most important entrepreneurs of the era because he fought the rent-seekers and won.
.
@elonmusk
really, don’t do this. X users have developed a language, a protocol, for referencing article headers and this breaks the language and makes communication more difficult
In the face of nearly 800k deaths. Complacency and lack of vision.
It’s no surprise that people think the moon landing was fake. Who could believe a country that can’t do simple rapid tests could have gone to the moon 50 years ago?
Jen Psaki somewhat mockingly asks reporter at the White House Daily Press Briefing if the US should be sending out rapid
#COVID19
tests to every household.
In the UK you can order 1 pack (containing 7 tests) everyday.
Michael Lewis says everyone thought the CDC were the special forces of epidemiology but they turned out to be a university department and as this thread indicates, a second-rate one at that.
Many are torn between frustration and sympathy for
@CDCgov
. Given all the things CDC are failing to get done (eg rapid data dissemination and analysis), I am shocked by what they DO they spend time on. 🧵sharing observations from my interactions with CDC staff. 1/14
Are the aliens giving us superconductivity, cancer killing drugs and AI and the government is just leaking it slowly so we don’t freak out? Only explanation that makes sense.
Small molecule oral cancer drug kills 100% of solid tumors across 70 evaluated cancer types in vitro and in animal models with a therapeutic index of 6 and no discernible side effects
Phase 1 trials now underway

US trials of AZ vaccine are out:
- 32,000 people took part
- no drop in protection for over-65s
- 100% effective at preventing people from falling seriously ill
- 79% effective vs symptomatic covid-19
- no safety issues regarding blood clots
Word is that MIT alumni are incensed about the cancellation of Dorian Abbot.
MIT leadership is under pressure.
Pubic apology from MIT is possible and would be welcome.
The travel bans have no rational basis whatsoever.
Throw them out immediately and start with a simple policy. Anyone vaccinated is allowed to travel to the US.
Una mujer hizo su clase de aerobic sin darse cuenta de que estaban dando el golpe de Estado en Myanmar. Y pues puede verse como el convoy de militares llega al parlamento.
Albert Bourla is a hero. He marshaled Pfizer resources & inspired employees to produce a life-saving vaccine in record time. A great scientific, technological and organizational feat. He deserves, with Sliaou and Perna, a Nobel peace prize. To see him treated like this is obscene

Tesla produces about 1 million cars per year, quadrupling goes to 4 or 3 extra. Average miles driven per year say 12,000, avg mpg 30 so fuel savings 3 mil*12000/30=1.2 billion gallons saved. Americans use about 120 billion gallons of gasoline per year so a 1% saving.
I have over 300 students and judging by that sample many people are reaching the breaking point. It's worse now than last semester. The pandemic is amplifying all the other problems students may have--family, work, health. We cannot end this thing soon enough.
This piece by
@lydiadepillis
is the best piece ever written on the FDA in a mainstream news publication. It gets everything right. Sea change in attitude.
Tried to explain to my law and Econ students that In the criminal justice system, the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups: The police, who investigate crime, and the district attorneys, who prosecute the offenders.
Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
There is reportedly a huge pay gap between the actors in HBO’ “The Last of Us”.
According to Variety, Pedro Pascal received $600,000 per episode, while Bella Ramsey received $70,000, despite both being the protagonists of the series.
The coronavirus testing capacity in the U.S. is facing enormous new pressure, with holiday travelers waiting in long lines to be tested, overworked laboratories struggling to keep up and rapid at-home diagnostics flying off pharmacy shelves.
Bonkers! First Minister of Wales says they are slowing down delivery of Pfizer vaccine so they can space it out evenly over 6 weeks. Does he not understand what a pandemic is?!!
In order to better detect and control the Delta variant, I am taking steps to make testing more available, affordable, and convenient.
I will use the Defense Production Act to increase production of rapid tests — including those you can use at home.
Most economists are middle of the road Democrats. They are attacked as laissez-faire because economics is the one social science where some diversity of opinion, including conservative and libertarian opinion, is still respected and some people find that intolerable.
