There was a carjacking and attempted carjacking in the neighborhood tonight. A neighbor emails me that “As a parent it’s feeling borderline irresponsible to stay here and try to raise a family.”
At least 20 shots fired in our neighborhood again.
A neighbor shares:
“I'm freaking out holding all three of my kids and hoping no stray bullets hit us. I'm done. We are leaving the city. This is not normal and it is stupid that I'm putting my family at risk.”
A neighbor with young children has experienced two shootings in two weeks on his block and said his family hopes to move out of D.C. within the year. We have to get violent crime under control and close these gun cases.
The complete lack of enforcement of vehicle registration rules in the District is unacceptable. What will it take to get DPW to go after fake and expired tags in a real way?
Hello
@DCDPW
. This illegally parked truck is blocking my constituents’ back entrance in the alley on the 100 block of 16th Street SE. It has ~$3K in tickets. Please tow this vehicle.
There has been horrific gun violence on the Hill this weekend. I know this is incredibly upsetting for neighbors. This will be an important topic at our upcoming meeting. Please don’t hesitate to reach out.
D.C. is facing many challenges— from crime to education to the functioning of basic city services. It’s such a disservice to District residents to gut local coverage.
@dccrimefacts
has stepped in with great reporting on various issues, but we need strong local coverage.
Noooooo ! It is sad that the once-thriving Metro section of the Post is now taking even more cuts. No other news organization has the local reach of the dwindling Post. Several years ago, then-editor Marty Baron signaled this diminished metro section …
Hello
@311DCgov
. This abandoned car hasn’t moved in over a month. It’s been ticketed numerous times. Please help us get this out-of-state car removed.
Good morning
@311DCgov
! There is an abandoned car with flat tires on the 200 block of 16th Street SE. It hasn’t moved in more than a week and has already been ticketed.
This is at least the fifth shooting on this corner in the last ~9 months. The community was promised a CCTV camera on this block last October and it still hasn’t happened.
@DC_Chander
and I met with MPD a few weeks back and they are focused on this corner but they need help.
Good news for Hill East! The MPD CCTV camera the community has asked for at 15th and Independence SE will be installed in the next day or two. The camera is not a panacea to public safety issues, but we know that a higher likelihood of accountability provides a deterrent effect.
It appears that DC was informed of 494 DUI convictions last fiscal year & revoked 0 driver's licenses.
How did none of those convictions trigger the conditions to revoke a license in this part of the DC code?
Am I missing something?
Note for Hill East neighbors: Meet me and MPD representatives at 15th and Independence at 6PM Wednesday, April 10th to discuss the recent gun violence in our community.
Last November
@charlesallen
shared this update—seven months later the camera has still not been installed, and we’ve had additional shootings. When
@DC_Chander
and I last spoke to MPD we were told to follow up with Mayor and Council. Hill East needs help to get this done.
From the crime lab, to 911, to ticketing/towing cars with expired or fake tags, residents of the District simply expect and deserve basic services to work.
Public safety and the increase in violent crime is by far the number one issue I hear about.
Murders are at a 20-year high. It’s not “MAGA” to acknowledge the problem.
I knew this guy was insufferable on national politics but he is just clueless and uninformed on local affairs, which is a shame because he lives here and other people listen to him. He is the part of the MAGA group in DC local politics, voting against his own good gov interest.
This is important —tough gun laws don’t mean much without enforcement. Local officials often cite guns from out of state on D.C. streets, but regardless of where the illegal guns come from, there needs to be accountability.
New post: "Tough" gun laws but weak enforcement in DC
- Almost half of arrests result in no charges, up from 15% in 2018
- Under 40% of arrests lead to convictions
- Most CPWL sentences are probation-only
- Eroding gun law enforcement is ignored relative to fare evasion (1/
There has now been another shooting at this corner just 10 days later. That’s six shootings since October, and the community is still waiting for a CCTV camera. This is the lowest hanging fruit in terms of solving crimes—MPD needs help to get this equipment.
This is at least the fifth shooting on this corner in the last ~9 months. The community was promised a CCTV camera on this block last October and it still hasn’t happened.

Some good news in the fight against violent crime: MPD shared that the U.S. Attorney has taken a more active role in ensuring officers understand the impact of recent D.C. Circuit Fourth Amendment rulings so they can successfully prosecute more cases.
Important column on the attendance crisis in D.C. schools. I asked Councilmember Henderson about this at our last ANC meeting. She discussed steps the Council was taking but we need much stronger oversight here.
Bullets through the walls in our neighborhood, a considerable distance (half a block) from the shooting, but not a surprise given the firepower on our streets.
Help save Pacci’s restaurant at Lincoln Park. BZA will be deciding soon whether they can use their second floor for the restaurant. The change is supported by neighbors, our ANC, & me! I’m sending another letter of support & inviting neighbors to co-sign:
Just devastating. My thoughts are with this man’s family. I can’t imagine their grief having survived years of war for Nasrat to be shot and killed on Capitol Hill.
NEW: I’ve spent the day talking to family and friends of Nasrat Ahmad Yar, the Lyft driver shot, killed in NE DC. He was a respected interpreter in Afghanistan. His wife wanted him to come home in Alexandria that night but he chose to work so he could make money for rent.
@wusa9
Let’s look at some of the largest contrasts:
PSA 205: Palisades, American University, Wesley Heights, Spring Valley
- 19 Officers who had 128 crimes and 61 arrests in 2022
PSA 107: Lincoln Park, Capitol Hill East
- 13 Officers who had 509 crimes and 333 arrests in 2022 (7/12)
Second time in a week I’ve had to call 911 in Washington, D.C. And second time that I’ve been on hold for more than two minutes.
The National Emergency Number Association standard: 90% of 911 calls should be answered within 15 seconds.
ICYMI: This week
@anc_7d
sent our first support letter of the year to
@DDOTDC
advocating for the 19th Street and Potomac Avenue traffic calming and bike lane project.
So many of the issues we face in D.C. are connected. The car of the suspects who stole this poor dog had paper tags. Enforcing paper tags would help tackle crime overall.
Confirmed this happened on Monroe St. NE across from Burroughs Elementary in Brookland. Likely the same incident
@alanhenney
shared earlier. If you live nearby please check your cameras for any footage ~4pm that might be useful (vehicles, tags, people, vehicle direction). 🙏🙏🙏
There needs to be better enforcement against reckless drivers, whether we’re talking about $1000s in unpaid tickets, or long-expired temporary and fake tags.

: Neighbors are on the hunt for this car after it smashed into some of theirs on Columbia Rd NW Sunday night.
A license plate search shows $1000s in unpaid tickets.

About 10 shots fired at 15th and Independence SE. The community asked for an additional CCTV camera after multiple incidents of gun violence at this same location last fall.

How adorable is this?! These kids are at “work” testing the newly-renovated 17th and C Park and Playground to make sure it is kid approved 🦺 This is the second cohort of DPR Kid Playground Inspectors

Hello
@DDOTDC
. There are numerous rusted out lampposts on 16th Street SE. This one is on the 100 block. Will these rusted bases also be replaced as part of the Smart Street Lighting Project?
The Mayor and Council need to get back to basics and focus on delivering primary services like timely and accurate emergency response. This is the Mayor’s responsibility but the Council has an oversight role.
After last week's flooding killed 10 dogs inside District Dogs, the acting director of D.C.'s 911 call center spoke for the first time. It took 23 minutes between the first 911 call and first responders getting inside. At least two dispatchers called this a "water leak."
MPD is investigating gunshots at 16th A/Independence. There were no injuries, but three vehicles sustained damage. MPD is searching for a silver Toyota Avalon with a dark tint. Please check security cameras and contact MPD at (202) 727-9099.
Two cars exchanged significant gun fire at 5:30AM in our neighborhood. Thankfully no one was hurt. A neighbor’s security camera caught both cars and the footage has been shared with MPD. A reminder to take advantage of the District’s rebate program for home security cameras.
Thank you
@DCPoliceDept
for coming out for tonight’s community meeting regarding recent gun violence in our neighborhood and to my ANC colleagues
@Wendell_Felder
and
@DC_Chander
for attending.
I met a neighbor today who is moving in large part due to the gun violence at 15th and Independence. A bullet hit the front door. I asked
@MayorBowser
about a camera at this corner. We need the Mayor and Council’s help to get this done. CC:

Catching up and read that the Capitol Hill Restoration Society voted against allowing Pacci’s restaurant to expand to the second floor, a move supported ANC 6A and 6B. Pacci’s has been such a plus for the community—would they prefer to see the building vacant for years again?
We know that good video evidence is key to closing cases and increasing accountability.
We will be adding 50 CCTV cameras throughout the city, and we are committed to doubling the number of cameras over the next 2 years.
Also stopped by the new (opened in August) Sala Thai at 19th and C SE next to Stadium-Armory Metro. 78 seat space is dominated by a rectangular bar. I had ordered takeout but ordered a very well made $11 mai thai before they closed at 9p (they're seeking later hours)
Congratulations to Commander Hall on this promotion! He’s been incredibly helpful to Hill East, meeting with neighbors in their homes to discuss safety issues. Thank you to Commander Bryant for her service.
Hello neighbors! Next Friday from 9:15AM-11:15AM I am hosting a Rat Walk with the Department of Health to help mitigate the rodent issues in the neighborhood.
Hello
@DCDPW
. Please ensure officers are aware of our unique parking situation in Hill East after redistricting. A legally parked neighbor received a ticket. While we are in Ward 7, we continue to have Ward 6 residential parking.
'We've lost 75%' of search and seizure cases, DC's top prosecutor says
Matthew Graves: DC Court of Appeals "dramatically changed what officers can and cannot do when it comes to protective pat downs of individuals."
@WUSA9
Of particular interest to
#HillEast
will be the 19th Street and Potomac Avenue safety project and bike lane proposal from
@DDOTDC
. Details available here.
This shooting suspect is a name & age match with someone arrested in November 2023 with 2 pistols & 3 shotguns. They may have been a SPO & the plea deal resulted in no jail time.

update: 17th St at East Capitol St NE DC. Roadway is closed. Carjacked auto going wrong way on 17th St SE crashed into a passing car. 1 male arrested at scene and the other was captured nearby. Woman in smashed car was in shock and her car is a total loss.

I’ve read the definition for abandoned vehicle and I don’t understand why this doesn’t qualify as being abandoned and tow eligible? Please clarify.

Thank you to

Cap Hill East (19th and C SE next to Stadium-Armory Metro) had its certificate of occupancy issued earlier this week, so hopefully opening soon.
Will be pretty cozy spot - around 70 seats, just 2200 SF
ICYMI -- the 2021 final traffic fatality numbers released this week were nearly identical to the ones released in May 2022 (42,915 vs 42,939 in final report)
"Homicides in the U.S. dropped significantly in 2022 and have plummeted even faster this year, putting the country on track for one of the biggest declines in killing ever recorded, crime statistics show."
Surprised to hear that? You're not alone:
Hello

The huge decrease in the # of truancy referrals screened by Court Social Services (CSSD) suggests they are now ignoring hundreds of referrals a year from DC schools.

applies GPS monitoring to only a small % of its highest-risk offenders under their supervision:
- 2,120 offenders on "Maximum Supervision Level" and another 1,645 on "Intensive"
- Only "490 offenders subject to GPS monitoring"
…
This is an important issue, particularly as it relates to the prosecution declinations by the U.S. attorney. I asked
@MayorBowser
about forensics at our last meeting.
Shocking reporting in this piece. Drug dealers have overrun housing where the District is paying $2600 for a small 1-bedroom apartment.
We need accountability in these programs.
On weekday mornings, Lewis Watts leaves his tiny second-floor apartment along Quincy Street in Northwest D.C. Often, his path downstairs is blocked by passed-out drug users and what they leave behind — beer cans, the remnants of takeout meals, the burnt smell of crack cocaine.
