Would love to see more churches cut sermons down to 10-15 minutes, while relocating most of their teaching to alternative formats and contexts, ideally more interactive in character. Overdependence upon the Sunday morning sermon is a straitjacket upon Christian instruction.

The treatment Liz Bruenig received from some on the left was a sad reminder that much politics is a screen onto which people project the pathologies of their personal psychodramas, and that few things are more maddening to them than the healthiness and happiness of others.

One advantage of ministers wearing clerical vestments is they greatly weaken the sort of culture that centres the preacher and their personality. An added benefit is that, when ministers wear collars, it likely shortens the great line of attractive women trying to hit on them.

The prophet Nathan's parable, about a rich man stealing and consuming a poor man's beloved little ewe lamb, certainly frames David's sin as one of abuse of power, and implies that Bathsheba had little capacity to resist.

Claiming David raped Bathsheba is a perfect example of twisting Scripture to make a story about sin into one about power dynamics. It is creating interpretations God did not in order to fit modern political narratives & agendas. The interpretation is textbook intersectionality.

Whether people are dismissing the scandal of the Bible as 'God learning to be God', or speaking of Jesus 'saving the Bible from itself', it is truly astonishing that this sort of nonsense is allowed to pass for anything remotely resembling Christian religion.

Let's be very clear about this, an unaccountable culture-warring journalist without church office or apparent theological training using an evangelical conference to undercut ordained ministers is an extremely egregious example of what the original Big Eva critique was attacking.

Much of the dysfunctionality of current conversations about peoplehood and 'place' may be in part a result of the fact that many modern people—and perhaps especially in America, where the modern condition is most pronounced—don't really have anything resembling a 'place'.

There are huge problems on this front in the US, but the abysmal shallowness or lack of catechesis and Christian education in the UK seems FAR more pervasive and systemic. Serious Christian schooling, all age Sunday school, lay theological literacy, etc. are all extremely rare.

My full statement is still to come, but here are some receipts from Rod for starters. And now we should all consider the indicators that Wolfe knew this all along and consider his behaviour from the last few days—and the character of his broader project—accordingly.

In the season of Pentecost, I am reminded of this perceptive passage from Oliver O'Donovan's 'The Desire of the Nations'. Why did Jesus not deliver the Jews from the Romans? Surely this is what they deliverance would have required? His remarks are striking.

A faithful Church will often tend to have the effect of tempering and relativizing people's loyalties to their national and ethnic groups. It is worth considering the example of the Apostle Paul here.

Would you rather live in the hellscape of social media and be regularly mugged by users demanding that you answer ever more bizarre hypothetical questions, or would you rather live in the beauty of reality?

Would you rather live in the country in an area of great natural beauty but you will get sprayed by a skunk three times in your life, or in the country in a post-industrial slagscape of old coal mines and scrubby tertiary-growth trees but you will never get sprayed?

Spending time in the Bible and prayer really can feel like breathing the purest air after being in a sickly miasma. It can also reveal just how toxic the atmosphere we typically inhabit actually is. We have unclean lips and we dwell among people of unclean lips.

The biblical principle of love for neighbour is not the same as a principle of generic love for every person: it provides an immediate focus for our realm of our moral concern and duty, making it real and practical.

Instead of doing lots of teaching in a long (and typically repetitive) sermon, divide the congregation into all-age Sunday school classes and give instruction designed to stretch people at whatever level their understanding might be.

That Christianity rejects the idea forgiveness merely means 'no biggie' and that even the most wicked sinners—people who have done truly horrendous things—can know the forgiveness of God remains one of the great scandals of the faith. But there is no hope for us without it.

There really is no substitute for knowing the actual text of the Bible really, really well. Without such knowledge, your hearing and your use of it will tend to be poor.

I've criticized @PerfInjust , but after his withdrawal of his statements on interethnic marriage and support for the good of Americans of all ethnicities intermarrying to solidify their identity as one people, Kinists are now recognizing clear water between their position and his.
