I'm remembering the edicts I grew up with: don't wear that; don't go out alone; don't give the wrong idea; don't look or respond, walk away (fast) & why were you there in the first place? Also: don't complain, we're post-feminism now; be nice. Oh. And smile.

@guttersniper
Another man, moves to sit opposite us. Starts saying exactly the same things to the creep. He just wants to be friends with him, why's he ignoring him, etc. Creep shuts up. And doesn't follow me. (I still alighted at a different stop from normal though)
@guttersniper
On a bus years ago, several seats available: a man sits next to me, asks me out. I say no. He pushes. Says he wants to be friends, that I'm being rude by ignoring him, that he wants to talk in private...so he'll get off at my stop... 1/2
@DailyMailUK
Language matters. It socialises us. We hear 'had sex' and most unconsciously associate it with something that isn't harmful. The right language here is rape, sexual assault, sexual abuse. Please get this right for survivors.
@NaomiOhReally
In my late teens, I had an actual injunction order against a man who had been harassing me. When he turned up at the house I was staying at, I called the police. They came, but said: he only wants to talk. Whereas I was described as "hysterical".
@roseg
@guttersniper
Thank you🙏🏽 This was in the nineties, but we're still here aren't we? If I'm out on my own, I always expect a 50% probability of something similar. I just couldn't think of a more recent example where someone stepped in to help 🙃
@ReadingsBooks
Given Julie's decades-long commitment to tackling violence against women and girls, isn't this antithetical to promoting safety, respect and consideration?
@CCriadoPerez
It's vile. Also a double-standard as apparently it's fine to still name men. And it's dangerous. If we can't name a sex class, then we can't fight inequalities faced by them. And it seems to be women we can't name. There are better ways of being inclusive. Misogyny ain't it.
@NiSibeal
@NaomiOhReally
At the time I never thought about the pervasive sexism. Now it's writ large. And more than 2 decades on, we're still here. Sickening.
So humbled to receive the President's Award for Professional Excellence. We don't go on these journeys alone & I was in very good company last night!
Official pics later, these will do for now.

@BAPIOUK
for all you do &
@CNagpaul
for your very kind words!
Energised after a fantastic webinar to launch our IMG Induction with
@RaoMala
🙌🏽
Great engagement, 60+ attendees & consensus from system partners that this is a no-brainer.
IMGs bring so much to the NHS. They deserve a supportive, welcoming induction.
Let's make it happen!
A full house for 1st
@gmcuk
*in person* Welcome to UK practice event in 2 years!!!
Amazing to be in a room with our new IMG colleagues 🙌
So important for IMGs to build support networks properly & speak with us instead of using a chat box.
We got a round of applause too🥳
@DrJessTaylor
It's literally (& I use the word with impunity) hardwired into language. Where male is the default, where female honorifics are tied to relationships with males. Mention it, and people look at you like you're crazy - raising trivialities when there's so much wrong in the world.

We must focus on eliminating barriers IMGs face, but there must be greater focus on what IMGs bring too. Lovely to hear about this today! 🙌🏽

This. So much.
In one of my teaching slides I note that there are over 200 euphemisms for death & dying.
We have a responsibility to be clear. It's the compassionate thing to do.
#EndOfLifeCare
@DyingMatters
We use metaphors:
‘They’re gravely ill.’
‘There’s a chance they might not make it.’
Unless you use specific words it doesn’t sink in.

Let's get to work 🙌🏽✊🏾
We’re delighted to welcome

This is one of the major issues I'm seeing with recent so-called inclusive language. It's exclusionary, but just to women. Healthline did exactly the same a few mths ago, a major news outlet as well, where they write articles on men, but daren't say women. Pure misogyny.
@David_Challen
This is utterly vile. I was once told (by a man) that I should focus on egalitarianism rather than feminism. This is why I continue to focus on feminism.

We are delighted to launch the international medical graduate induction. this will enhance the experience & social integration of overseas doctors into the UK. This is the first time we have inducted doctors was creating a sense of belonging that takes account of diversity
Great to have been part of this with the incredible

Superb talk from
@SujeshBansal
. We need to educate supervisors, the wider system & all of us in it on cultural competence. Different cultural preferences make a huge difference & allows problems to arise & escalate.
A new standardised induction programme for international medical graduates who qualified outside the UK has been launched by the NHS.

That was a remarkable start to my morning. I felt every word of that. It took me back, to those classrooms, to those lockers, to those spaces where I wasn't laughing, but felt it was churlish to question why. I have a voice now. But it took a while. Thank you, that was powerful!
Always inspiring.

And thanks to all those who have offered to help shape this 🙏🏽 Please add your voice! 🗣
Today we've opened a consultation on

Terrifying isn't it? And how dare they harass a woman in the name of anti-fascism. I marched with the ANL many times. This is not what we did.
@gentlemanbroad
@glaad
@SourPatches2077
That's the definition of retrograde. Even a tweet showing empathy must be purged. And this is the kind of thing I started to notice at one of my charities a few years ago. That suddenly there was a 'wrong' type of lesbian. 🙄

I hesitate to 'like' this. Utterly abhorrent. I knew of course, have received the odd vile message myself. But seeing the data is stark.
This is great - uplifting to see employers driving forward this essential support for IMGs.
Particularly rewarding for those of us who worked with the marvellous
@RaoMala
to land this.
There is a moral imperative here. Let's see more responses & make it happen everywhere! 🙌🏽

@mcdonnelljp
I was a character from whatever book I read. Then a few unpleasant experiences later, I internalised misogyny and became 'one of the lads'. But then I realised why: I grew up, became a feminist and am proud of being a woman.
In days of yore, before my Twitter hiatus, I used to talk my Crazy Goblin.
The Goblin has grown. He's taller than me even in my heels. And he's getting better hair game than me too. 🙀
Anyway, lovely few days off for an old friend's wedding. Wish me luck with my inbox!
@Prof_Matt_P
@theSAScollect
Yes, I think this is really important too. Colleagues working with SAS drs need awareness so they aren't mired in outdated notions and become allies in driving access to opportunities.

@theSAScollect
1. LE drs are rapidly growing in number
2. 39% of LE drs we surveyed think it likely they will move abroad to work - citing lack of progression.
3. LE drs take more stress-related leave
Alarm bells ringing yet?
Wellbeing & retention.

Great conversations today

Many similar themes in talks: fear culture from myths & regulators used as threat. Need for early restorative interventions
Some of my slides given tech issues & my biggest plea: seize opportunity to shape new

My Crazy Goblin is 14 today 😱
Way taller than me and sometimes more mature frankly. But that expression tells me we shouldn't have bought him an otamatone for a laugh...

As ever, wonderful insights from
@rogerkline
at
@BAPIOUK
.
The system has failed to tackle bullying & harassment. What can we do?
Leaders mustn't leave it to those subjected to poor behaviour to raise - leaders must challenge, empower bystanders, build psychological safety 1/2
Increased sense of autonomy, belonging and demonstrating competence - key recommendations from
#CaringforDoctorsCaringForPatients

@DailyMailUK
@welsh_shaun
Yep. Whilst the categories in the 2003 Act could do with updating, offences against 13-16 yo children are still classed as child sexual abuse and perpetrators are still paedophiles. Reporting could use such language rather than words which minimise survivors' experiences.

Wonderful to meet colleagues & celebrate the care, compassion & innovation that happens every day, no matter what's going on in the world.
As
@HelenStokesLam
said - judges had a tough job!
Imagine someone hurling a vicious racial epithet at you as you travel to work. Imagine being sexually harassed by the creep you were trying to avoid eye contact with. You make it into work. Then it happens there.

So sorry to hear this. A trans friend was one of the first to open my eyes to the changing landscape. She was suddenly being called 'truscum' and predicted, with many others I'm sure, that we'd end up here.
Great to hear from

@gmcuk
conf about WRES data - disaggregated across ethnicity, gender, so that local change can be affected. This is a really rich data set - a real opportunity for improvement as the exemplar sites show.
@OrthopodReg
Ah, the classic: if only women realised that the sexual harassment they're subject to is: good-humoured banter/a compliment/them failing to understand/all in their heads. Silly billies. 🙄😤
I'm going to be sharing insights from our Spotlight on SAS and LE doctors report tonight. Lots of evidence which should act as lever for local change.
So, on this: Appropriate development for LE drs is a moral, pt. safety & workforce issue 👇🏽

@MorganDaniel99
Was once told that I would never get taken seriously as a woman in the workplace unless I stuck to black and navy. Well, my hair's now bright purple & I my clothes an array of colours. Some attitudes today remain positively Victorian 🙄
Good start to my birthday. Rescued a mouse from the cats, had my vaccine and got home to this. He's even served the afternoon tea on the Denby. Feeling suitably spoilt. 🥳
@theSAScollect
It takes aeons to change culture. So many perceptions still remain that SAS are 'middle grades'. Work of

Important point from

Those who aren't affected (by discrimination) must be as outraged as those who are affected.
Totally, unequivocally, agree.

@livetutanptsd
Yes. I have routinely been offered honoraria for speaking at conferences as the 'professional' but never when asked to share my lived experience. And alarmingly, I hadn't thought of the implications before.
Reflections on a 🧵 that went a bit wild:
1.Why? Because sexual harassment is RIFE
2.People valued the example of male allyship. Do this more.
3.Far too many *still* don't believe women (as ever, I had to block & report a handful of threats)
4.But they were drowned out

@nazirafzal
As ever, thank you Nazir for speaking up on this. Society is utterly blind to misogyny - from so-called banter to the shocking levels of MVAWG, it's simply tolerated.
@theSAScollect
I often come back to the same argument on this one: it's morally right and has an impact on retention. We have highly trained colleagues who can contribute so much. Why would we not nurture them?
