Covid twitter is worse than ever.
Zerocovid & Antivax both deeply entrenched in completely ridiculous (in the real world) argument, just making things up as they go along.
To make things worse there are senior professional scientists on both extremes.

my arse!
NHS! YOU're paid to do a job, YOU're a service industry paid for by the taxpayer, the clue is in the name.
Around 8% of our wages goes on YOU!
YOU don't get to make the rules, YOU need to become more efficient to deal with an aging population and spend our cash more wisely.
If you’re asked to build a model on Omicron severity & do so in denial that 95% of the country who have antibodies also have other serious defences mechanisms such as T cell & memory cell resistance, and label your results with 95% certainty, you have no credibility whatsoever.

My wife has been 3 years without Covid as well. Worked in a GP Surgery throughout the pandemic, no hepa, no distancing (impossible in that surgery), no enovid spray, no

.
Funny old game innit?
So will anyone in the press step up to the plate and publicly shame Imperial for that garbage fictional nonsense they've put out today? You know, call them out for making up fairy stories? Preferably a top virologist? Ta!
Every f*cking where I turn on covid twitter is populated by people who honestly believe that masking is a silver bullet against covid infection, despite every kind of real world evidence to the contrary.
I blame the messaging from the zero coviders & their armies of followers.
Does Stephen Kinnock not understand that part of the production of steel involves a coal fired coking plant & his own party want coal banned from the UK by 2030?
As such, what is the point of Tata Steel staying here? It’s over, jobs gone, they’ll simply move elsewhere.
Labour MP Stephen Kinnock says he urges Tata Steel to "sit down and listen very carefully to what the multi-union are saying".
More than 3,000 jobs are at risk at the Tata Steel plant in Port Talbot, which is in Mr Kinnock's constituency.

I have to say, these people need to live in the real world. What on earth do they expect the Govt to do when mortality is lower than pre covid levels and the majority of covid admissions are not 'for' covid? FFS, get over yourself!

Lots of people in hospital 'WITH' a very transmissible virus that loves it indoors shock!
Meanwhile, ICU use, almost a month into Omicron, flat as a pancake & weekly deaths (England) are in fact showing a decrease of 50% since 5/11 although I'm sure there's a Xmas reporting lag!
@GaryLineker
Unfortunately it’s now known that games were called off by the FA because they know that ‘certain football clubs’ have a long ‘history’ of not respecting the Monarchy and a propensity to boo the National Anthem.

Does Scotland stand for indiscriminate bombing of innocent ships manned by innocent civilians on one of the busiest 'neutral' shipping straits on earth, with the consequence being that if they can't navigate that route we will all pay more for goods from the Asia & Middle east?
Got to say, I find the covid twitter pussyfooting around the obvious fact that omicron WILL lead to an increase in cases, but as yet an unknown amount of pressure on NHS...and the view that 'plan b' will make the remotest difference....by mathematicians....absolutely hilarious!
Those taxes are repaying over £400 billion of state debt created by Covid furlough & Energy support, an expense that not only did
@UKLabour
support but wanted to extend.
Let that sink in.🙄

@theAliceRoberts
The vulnerable are more than welcome to put an FFP mask on, what's the alternative seeing we absolutely know cloth masks don't stop transmission on public transport (see Scotland & France cases for proof)? Do you seriously want it mandatory for everyone to wear FFP masks forever?
@l_krishnan
7 days post wedding, similar amount of guests (approx 180). No masks, no hepa filters, lots of kissing, cuddling, dancing, singing, frivolity. NO covid cases reported to date.
I bet we had a better time
@IndependentSage
I'd like to ask whether you feel at all guilty about your constant calls for 'dangerous' schools to be closed during covid, the result being an even more dangerous long term obesity issue as a result of them being locked indoors for months on end & the most deprived hardest hit?
@Keir_Starmer
Nonsense. Inflation & rates are going up everywhere whether Govts are left or right of the political spectrum. Printing money, something Labour would advocate more of, would only add to that inflationary pressure 🙄
@drphilhammond
Have you seriously never heard of Krugman’s Leprochaun Economics?
Paul Krugman famously dubbed this phenomenon after Ireland’s GDP grew by more than 22% in 2015 due to tax shenanigans. Irish GDP was just a little over 500 billion euros in 2022. GNI is substantially lower.
She's at it again! Big statements not backed up by facts.
She failed to mention that in the last 12 months (11/2/21-10/2/22) Germany has reported 55,450 covid deaths (Worldometers) v UK 42,951. Even with larger population that's more deaths per million🙄
@zarahsultana
1) How are you going to get the likes of Shell & BP, who's profits are mainly earnt abroad, to pay that type of money?
2) How much tax do you think you'll get off them next year when they move to the EU to pay less tax, maybe holing in Dublin with the likes of Google & Amazon?
So how are our mask wearing Italian pals getting on? An update shows they have 4 times the cases, infection growing more quickly & with twice the positivity rate (20% v 10%), all despite legally enforcing FFP2 masks in many settings.
According to IndySage though masks work.🙄
@JustStop_Oil
No let’s be angry with YOU.
Just let people get on with their lives, they’re not your enemy.
You are alienating public support.
Find another way!
So I see that the 'follow the science' brigade who largely blamed covid for increased child hepatitis were wrong. To compound this, it seems the true cause was largely down to suppression of adenoviruses due to the restrictions they were keen to extend?
🙄
The 'extra testing' post half term case bounce is simply failing to materialise.
Cases by reporting date -22% v a fortnight ago, Over 80's still dropping and over 60's again in negative territory. Next to come is case data translating into lower admissions, a matter of time!
December UK Gas Futures price down to 243, the lowest level for 6 months, as futures market converges with today's spot price.
That's a drop of 56% from the price before the mini budget & 27% of August peak.
Even the OBR have to acknowledge this (as does the forthcoming budget).
@GaryLineker
@ollysmithtravel
It's a ridiculous argument is for you to suggest you sitting in an air conditioned studio/ 5 star Hotel in Qatar reporting on a match we can all see on the tv is remotely similar to being a war journalist who is putting his life at risk trying to find out what's actually going on
@timspector
In Havering there has been an 'emergency' list compiled of people on the front line (NHS staff and volunteers) who can get to the vax centre at short notice. They get a call and get the jab to avoid wastage. Not sure why Watford not doing same.

It’s a lot of old bollocks to be honest.
Thousands lose their bank account without explanation every year.
Farage has done these people a service.
NatWest lied, they broke client confidentiality rules/ laws, Farage, like those thousands, IS a victim.
It really is that simple.
@timspector
Tim,
1) Your survey is a symptomatic survey. ONS also has asymptomatic. ONS should be a far higher no than Zoe, that simply isn't the case now.
2) Zoe is meant to be real time. ONS a lag. ONS has shown cases dropping since 31st January, Zoe showed cases rising until last weekend
@devisridhar
Except Help Out to Eat Out, which only occurred in August, according to ONS Infection Study, had no bearing on cases?
(ONS numbers below). But you crack on with your misguided political opinion Devi! 🙄

@ScienceShared
I wish Deepti and ‘some’ of iSage who continuously abuse JCVI and other professionals would occasionally take a deep breath before ranting and raving, getting thousands of retweets from the cabal along the way. It’s not a good look and highly unprofessional.
Just a word of caution re exponential growth. It only lasts for a short of time. To the peak it's not lasted more than a couple of weeks before it tails off, whether in England or elsewhere, seemingly South Africa now. It could go very high but will burn itself out very quickly
Why I get a pit pissed off with lazy journalism, the likes of

If I've learned anything from covid twitter during the pandemic, it's that the term 'epidemiologist' holds little water when accurately dealing with numbers. Too many scientists allow political leanings to cloud the science. There are far too many examples to list here.

@UKHSA
The booster effect has been absolutely amazing. Infections (England) in first boosted 80+ age group are down 54% in a month, 60+ down 40%. Admissions in over 65's down 46% in a month from 3,795 a week to 2,062.
@DrFrancesRyan
1) 126 admissions 'for' covid on 8th September.
2) Covid critical care beds 78 in the whole of England (56.5 million population).
3) Beds taken up 'for' covid less than we saw throughout 2022.
A sense of proportion please or does Covid make you relevant?
@timspector
What messaging would you like Tim? Even you're charts are showng a slowdown, as is dashboard. Cases will peak in the next week or so and then come down again.
@OwenJones84
Imagine thinking that suffering excess deaths following the closure of hospitals to non covid patients who were awaiting urgent operations was ‘avoidable’? 🙄
@chrischirp
He hasn’t said people should no longer self isolate has he? He’s just removed the legal requirement, a legal requirement that never existed in most countries in the first place….eg Scotland. 🙄
@BallouxFrancois
Sorry Francois it was IMO clearly put that way so as not to apportion any blame to Hamas, in a country who mostly don’t want to apportion any blame on Hamas.
@mariel_turner
Loads of Italians legally bound to wear FFP2 masks, it doesn't seem to be making much difference? Maybe it's not the silver bullet people think it is?
This says everything about twitter, think of a number, double it, add a couple of zeroes on the end and post it out as fact, 10k likes, nearly 6k RT's 🙄
New cases - dashboard! DOWN!
I know Zoe is reporting higher cases but find that difficult to believe!
1) still 1 mill+ tests being recorded on the system daily
2) recent hospital data still reducing.
Await ONS for confirmation though!
Biggest dashboard % drops in over 60's!
@BBCNewsnight
Why do you simply accept these 'professional' answers without questioning? Where is the evidence masks 'work' on a population level in the Omicron era?
Many of these same professionals (
@IndependentSage
)were calling for school closures until the (impossible) eradication of Covid!
So happily, as predicted Covid Admissions now dropping on a weekly basis, covid hospital beds will follow suit in 2 or 3 days time.
BA.4/5 wave admissions peaked at 12% less than BA.2 (13,049 week ending 13/7 v 14,809 week ending 31/3).
This really is no more than binary nonsense from Vallance & whoever else wishes to repeat it.
Unless there was a similar EOTHO initiative in the EU, it's clear that the policy wasn't the driver of infections.
Pat ain't a numbers man, he's a Chief Exec of GlaxoSmithKline FFS!🙄
NEW: Rishi Sunak's Eat Out To Help Out scheme drove a second wave of Covid, Sir Patrick Vallance has told the

@cjsnowdon
Indeed! Absolutely ridiculous!
It's like congratulating a murderer who has been charged with 3 counts of murder & only been convicted of 1 count.
@chrischirp
What is your solution to protect pre school babies from building an immune system to Covid/ Omicron?
There isn’t an approved baby vaccine anywhere on earth, they don’t go to school, they don’t understand masking? I don’t understand what you suggest we do?
@ShaunLintern
And if I hear one more time about the issues within the NHS being all Covid related, rather than due to underfunding for 30-40 years, I am also going to lose it. Beds are full up with respiratory sufferers every winter. There were 5 times more covid cases in hospital in January!
@devisridhar
My main issue is that you clearly are not impartial. 1) Sweden barely locked down yet have one of the best covid records on earth. 2) Scotland have almost identical excess deaths as England yet you never criticised Sturgeon.
@timspector
Tim, Zoe has no trend correlation with ONS whatsoever over the end of Jan/ start of Feb. If your app were right hospital data would have shifted sharply upwards.
@devisridhar
I want to know why, despite masking mandates in place in Scotland, the hospitalisation numbers there have been so much higher than in unmasked England?
I'm confused. The big 2 items of the mini budget were
1) the reversal of the 1.25% hike in NIC's. This will put a bit of cash into working people's pockets. It will cost about £16 bill a year.
2) the energy cap to keep people warm this winter.
What are people complaining about?
@danielgoyal
Sigh! It’s pretty much replaced the flu at this stage. I still see your thread is being retweeted everywhere, mainly by Indy, without correction? This makes you no better than a smiley I’m afraid. Omicron iS nOt sIx tIMes as bAD aS tHe fLu! Please take it down for accuracy sake!
So the loonies on the warpath about how 'Help Out To Eat Out' caused a covid wave after wassapps from a then misguided Health Minister.
For the record, Covid incidence was lower by the end of August than it was at the end of July.
The scheme was in place only in August.
C/o ONS!
@EssexPR
It's a throwaway comment but IF “ All guests returned negative antigen tests before the event but more than half are now isolating.
The infected staff were all fully vaccinated & are showing no symptoms ” that throwaway comment were true, the pandemic IS statistically over.
So following on from my tweet last night, we did get that mortality catch up from NHS, the revised number was 365, a weekly DECREASE of 1.3% from previous week despite us well into Omicron wave now. Sounds harsh but I'll settle for a DECREASE of 29% from week ending 5th Nov
NHS England have reported 365 new Covid hospital deaths over the period 25-30th Dec.. These I think will be added to today's 4pm number so I expect lots of noise on here about the high death number.. This is how hospital Covid deaths look including this:
Word of warning re poss high mortality data tomorrow as a result of Christmas backlog.
In the week ending Dec 23rd in England we had 684 deaths.
To get to 685 deaths for the week ending Dec 30th we will need a daily no of 375 tomorrow. Anything less & weekly deaths reducing....
@ReicherStephen
That article assessed 46 unvaxed, previously covid naive, severely ill inpatients in 2020. No relevancy to our population now.
Do IndySage ever stop to consider the damage they may be doing to their followers' mental health with this constant, now irrelevant bad news overload
Below were Independent Sage's requirements from 17th September 2021, more than 18 months into the pandemic.
All the elderly by this stage had the chance of 2 vaccinations & the offer of a winter booster.
They were effectively demanding a dystopian society!
@ClaudiaWebbe
Would you support a charitable organisation, with a huge balance sheet of expenses, to support white women only?
This charity doesn't even support women of mixed race?
Asking for a friend?
@IndependentSage
I would ask
@IndependentSage
what they suggest doing about the long term educational, mental & physical health damage to children they have encouraged throughout the pandemic by requesting longer lockdowns and school closures? That 5% increase in child obesity is shocking!
@andrew_lilico
I’m not sure what evidence is required when front line S Africa are saying that after 4 weeks they have no one on oxygen or dead. It’s clear from their CPR that they’re getting multiples of reported daily cases. We have 95% with antibodies, probably 99% with b/T-cell immunity.
Latest England Numbers last year v now
2020 2021 % Change
Admissions 2,886 2,370 -17.9%
In Hospital 22,728 12,395 -45.5%
In ICU 1,899 789 -58.45%
Mortality 820 178 -78.29%
@jonlis1
They have absolutely no right whatsoever to turn up with loadhailers & spoil the enjoyment of 10's of thousands of people who have come a long way to enjoy the ceremony.
And that has been the case since the Public Order Act 1936 was introduced.
@GaryLineker
They've paid nearly 80% of their UK profits in taxes FFS!
BP lost £18 billion in 2020, did anyone offer to put their hand in their pockets to cover their losses that year?
I find it incomprehensible that
@RachelReevesMP
is pretty much nailed on to be our next Chancellor!
BP made less than $2.8 bill North Sea profit (<10%) & will pay $2.2 bill in tax.
That's around 79% tax on UK profits.
Does she want to drive all business away from the UK?
Anyway, I'm off to the theatre & on to a restaurant in London to see in New Year, so apart from an occasional browse I'm out of here.
Here's to a wonderful New Year, Omicron proving to turn out how I suspect, not nice but leading to endemic state & covid twitter free 2022. HNY!
@TomLondon6
Why don't you try turning up in US/ EU/ Australia or pretty much anywhere without a passport or a visa & see if they'll leave you free to walk into their country?
