Tonight is the 15th anniversary of my brother's death. My mum reminded me of the statement I did for the trial & I found it. In it, I list the things I want to be able to do but can't. It brought back the memories- those moments that are our relationships. Here are some. 1/4

THREAD: I keep being asked when we can go "back to normal" or "like it was before". My personal thoughts: We've added a new disease to our population, more infectious and more severe than flu. The world pre 2020 no longer exists - we may want it to, but it just doesn't. 1/13

Also "learning to live with covid" would actually involve some learning. For instance creating safer environments through mass investment in clean air. Pretending covid is not a problem is not the same thing.

Fundamentally, world is different now. Acting as if it isn't, which UK seems determined to do, may feel good in short term but will result in a new normal worse than the old one. I prefer for us to build a new normal that's *better* than frequent sickness & disruption. 13/13

A virus isn't endemic just cos a govt minister says it is and just cos people want it to be. The current pattern of waning vax, new immune evasive variants, and minimal public health response seem set to doom us to massive surges once or twice a year. 1\5

An NHS doctor sent me this message last night after the press conference - the NHS is in *real* trouble. The problem is that hospital staff can face the sack if they talk to media without going through formal press office. Just cos they can't speak, don't think it's not bad!

For fuck's sake. Maths and physics are beautiful subjects. The barriers to entry are NOT difficulty, but attitudes like this and what is still a massively male dominated field and all the challenges that come from that when girls and women consider their careers.

“Physics isn’t something that girls tend to fancy. They don’t want to do it. They don’t like it… There’s a lot of hard maths in there that they don’t want to do.” 🤦🏻‍♀️ @Miss_Snuffy , UK Government Social Mobility Commission Chair #WomenInSTEM

So let's see. Omicron is just a cold and the pandemic is almost over, but the only fair comparison to how bad things are is a year ago, with a different variant and when hardly anyone was vaccinated? And even so we are not that far off 1st wave peak & hospitals declaring crises

Seems we have to learn to live with poverty, inequality, low wages, pandemics and planet threatening climate change. I guess government isn't about trying to actually improve anything!

I rarely quote tweet but this is not right. Firstly, it's airborne - that means aerosols are as important as droplets. That means masks and ventilation are crucial steps and both necessary. Second, there is excellent evidence on masks in schools: 1/4

Sort it out @NHSEngland ! Giving blood and no staff in masks, no requirement for donors (although a couple like me are). But asked to sanitise hands on entry! Fine but covid is AIRBORNE! No open windows either. If nothing else can you afford to lose staff if they get sick?

Regardless of Omicron, there's a lot of covid around right now. If you are infected from end of next week onwards you are v likely to be isolating over Christmas. Is the Xmas party season worth the risk?

This is the stupidest thing I've seen in a long time. Still at least we know who they're preparing to blame.

Two things that are being (wrongly) entirely ignored right now: 1) impact of these record cases on long covid 2) impact on children next term as they face another term of disruption through Omicron.

Was on @Channel4News earlier responding to Sajid Javid announcing definite further opening on 19th July and its irreversibility... basically - you just can't make such promises like that in a pandemic like this.

I note that none of Johnson, Whitty or Vallance even mentioned Long Covid today or that numbers with it have been increasing a lot since we've been tolerating high infections.

New @IndependentSage statement: Omicron is doubling so fast that sheer numbers will v likely outweigh any advantage of reduced severity (if it exists). To prevent NHS being overwhelmed in a few weeks & for a safer Xmas we need to act now. Not next week, not after Xmas, now. 1/2

To the "faulty data" "PCR tests bad" "no pandemic" crowd - Stop talking nonsense. Hospitals are full up of people who can't breathe with covid lung x-rays. Have some effing respect for the NHS staff battling to save their lives. One day it might well be you.
