I worked at Facebook when we had 200 employees
I’ve never understood why FB needs 20,000 employees. And less so the 70,000 employees Meta has now
@elonmusk
’s Twitter layoffs are appropriate
Unfortunate, but appropriate
These businesses just don’t require that many people
I once met Alex Honnold on a flight in Switzerland
We chatted for about an hour. As we picked up our bags he asked me: “what do you do for a living?”
“I invest in startups”
He replied: “Isn’t that incredibly risky?”
I strongly agree with this point, but boy is it unpopular 😅😂
Let’s give Congresspeople $2M a year, Senators $6M, and Presidents $40M
We’d likely save money on-net. Because now qualified people want to apply for those jobs
Politicians should make significantly more money.
The incentives are all wrong.
Pay the President $40mil/year and see the candidates.
No need for backroom deals or bribery.
If Elon winds up pulling this off & builds a leaner, more profitable & innovative Twitter… a lot of tech journalists’
#RIPTwitter
tweets from tonight are going to look pretty silly
But they won’t care. They’ll be too busy being faux-outraged at the next thing
I’ll just come out and say it: I don’t get NFTs. I don’t understand the JPEGs.
If anyone should get them it should be me. I was early to Bitcoin, a pre-sale buyer of Ethereum, a Coinbase seed investor, early Solana…
And I don’t get it. It feels like the emperor has no clothes.
Design is more important than ever for startups. One theory why: almost everything else has gotten easier.
Basic tech stacks are a commodity—automation enables smaller, focused teams—capital is abundant.
Product design is a larger percentage of what’s left.
Oh no! Bitcoin crashed all the way down to 2 dollars!
Oh no! Bitcoin crashed to 260 dollars!
Oh no! Bitcoin crashed to 3,000 dollars!
Oh no! Bitcoin crashed to 55,000 dollars!
notice a trend? ;)
The most common profession before becoming a Congressperson is being a lawyer. That’s a huge problem
We need more founders, engineers, scientists, doctors, inventors, builders to run
We’d be better off with folks in charge who have actually contributed something to society
The genius of Instagram V1’s filters was in how they solved the “ghost town” problem.
Filters were a useful single-player experience even w/ 0 friends.
If building a new social network—I’d paradoxically focus less on network design—more on crafting a novel 1-player experience.
Genuine question: what set of services or safety net does California provide at 13.3% state tax rate that Florida lacks at 0%?
Call me Miami-pilled: but it’s honestly outrageous how many dollars the tech industry has effectively hand-delivered to corruption & graft
After 2 weeks of thinking about it: wow, Chris Rock was an A+ example of what positive masculinity looks like.
Took the punch. Didn’t swing back. Could have easily escalated—justifiably so. Chose not to. De-escalated. Didn’t press charges. Walked away. Forgave.
In the last 24 hours, I:
Connected a US Congressman from NYC to a ventilator supplier.
Connected the largest Fiat-Chrysler manufacturing facility in the world to Operation Masks
Had calls with 5 PPE suppliers, each of which can provide 1MM+ masks a week
And I tweeted a bit 😅
I’ve beat Chris to every good investment he’s ever made so I welcome the short.
Chris was series B at Coinbase, I was series A.
Chris bought ETH in 2015, I bought in 2014. 🤷♂️
Dunks, then blocks me. What a clown
Zero sum thinking.
If Elon hadn’t made those billions it’s not like we’d all get a check in the mail.
He created new wealth. Assets that wouldn’t exist if he hadn’t started those companies.
Trump has not been denied his freedom of speech.
He’s being denied free reach.
You do not have a constitutional right to viral reach. Twitter doesn’t owe you their megaphone.
It’s quite popular to slam dunk on art NFTs right now
But where was everybody 6 months ago?
You’re only entitled to a victory lap if you called out the nonsense when doing so came at a social cost. When it was the unpopular thing to say
I meet a lot of new grads who ask how to break into VC
My general advice is: don’t
Work at a breakout-stage co. Get an exit. Then angel invest
You’ll be in control of your destiny & net better returns
100% ownership of checks is better than 20% split across a partnership
It’s pretty wild that the board voted *unanimously* for the poison pill measure
Even
@jack
Do you really think
@elonmusk
would be that horrible of an owner?
He does have a track record of being modestly successful, being the richest man in the world and whatnot
Let's say Spotify caves and de-platforms Joe Rogan.
So he goes back to YouTube. Now his content has far more virality & people see it *even more*.
So they'll lobby YouTube to kick him off.
Repeat this a few times & yes—this actually is about free speech & the tyranny of mobs.
Almost every one of these companies should be publicly traded—but they’re not
We’ve systematically cut the general public out of upside
If you were an early fan of Apple in the 80’s: great just buy the stock
Fan of any one of these? Better be an insider if you want to buy
"Why are people searching Reddit specifically? The short answer is that Google search results are clearly dying. The long answer is that most of the Web has become too inauthentic to trust."
Let me make this clear:
Fuck you
@VCBrags
,
@Recode
and
@voxdotcom
.
Seriously.
Folks like
@balajis
warned us about COVID-19 early on. And you mocked them with your cynicism.
Apologize now.
Yes, art NFTs have crashed hard. But who cares?
We all only bought it for the art, yeah?
It’s all about supporting artists. I’m not trying to make a profit here.
Wait. We bought it for the art, yeah?
Remember that one time people were spending $200,000+ on photos of rocks and cartoon monkeys…
And a prominent VC called me an idiot when I suggested such purchases might be dumb?
Good times 😂❤️
"This incredible technology is meant to make fun of Web developers, who struggle to maintain 15fps while scrolling a single-page application on a $2000 MacBook Pro, while enjoying 800ms delays typing code into their Electron-based text editors."
🤣
The unsaid thing in politics right now:
We’re not sending our best to Washington
Or to state houses
And certainly not to city councils
The people leading are frankly folks who graduated from condo board president into government
Nobody good wants to run 🤷♂️
College education is a cost-disease scam. Forgiving student loans is a shameless handout to the demographic most likely to vote Democrat. To forgive the loans you have to reform the system that created them first
.
@GavinNewsom
as California gets more supply of vaccine, can we set up 24/7 distribution?
Normal business hours aren't going to cut it. The more shots in arms per day, the more lives you save.
I for one don't mind taking a 3am appointment some time in February to get the shot.
@ChrisJBakke
“I calculate a p(good) of 90% for hamburgers, assuming a Bayesian stochastic sample set of all possible hamburgers & that we live in a simulation”
I don't just want Miami to be a tech hub.
I want it for Atlanta
And Nashville
And Philadelphia
Houston
San Antonio
Columbus
Durham
Detroit
All of them, and 20 more.
This isn't a zero sum game. I don't understand people hating on Miami becoming a tech hub.
@trendlinehq
@elonmusk
I don’t think this is a good metric though
The nature of technology is leverage. Revenue per employee should ideally grow exponentially, not stay flat
Please don’t follow this advice if you want meaningful, long-lasting relationships. This sort of ladder-climbing, Machiavellian over-thinking of friendships is a recipe for loneliness.
Galloway’s life advice is about on par with his stock tips.
You constantly want to be upgrading your peer group. You want to hang out with smarter, more successful, more interesting, higher-character people because you will rise or fall to the level of your peer group.

I have a friend who:
Negotiated hard when buying his car down to the last $10
Knows the price at every gas station in his city down to the penny
Won't ever spend more than $1,000 on vacation
...and who just bought a cartoon penguin NFT for $9,000
😂🤷♂️
For the first 5 years of angel investing, when asked “what’s your best investment?” I always said Coinbase.
Almost always the VC asking would laugh.
Now, about half of them are no longer partners at their funds & the other half are scurrying to hire a crypto-focused partner 🤷♂️
Many VCs operate under the guise that they somehow don’t work in finance
We work in finance. And unless we contribute tangible work beyond a check—we’re just financiers
That’s why I find 98%+ of VC content mktg & threads insufferable. Should founders take advice from bankers?
Make up your own damn mind about how hard you should work. I’ve met happy & successful people with vastly different work styles.
Just don’t let virtue-signalers on Twitter influence your decision either way. Especially those whose “hustle” is to tweet all the time about hustling
@ShaanVP
I mean, if my couch is netting accidental $1MM returns...
Maybe I put it right back in the couch and see if it can return more.
Let your winners ride
Generally not worth it to reply to someone who is engaging in bad faith
It's like playing chess with a pigeon
The pigeon just knocks all the pieces over, shits all over the board, and struts around like it won
I dislike that so many jobs these days seem to increasingly require social media self-promotion.
Where does the trend end? Will we have influencer plumbers? Thought-leader electricians?
Will humble, quietly competent ones lose business b/c they won't be influencer sell-outs?
Venture Capital is a brutal business. You may very well fail.
But I won’t be the person who tells you that. I’ll tell you the opposite.
Because almost everyone told me I was going to fail when I first started 8 years ago.
Frankly: I beat every single one of them. You will too.
In 2022, I fully expect Harvard Business School to do a case-study on the effectiveness & efficiency of shitposting as a marketing strategy.
It’s a sign of the times that I don’t even know if I’m serious or joking with this one
I have no doubt that NFTs will evolve into something exciting.
But I think the prospect of buying into the 1000th derivative art project copying crypto punks isn’t interesting whatsoever.
Digital ownership is exciting. But most of these art NFTs are going to zero
Something big is happening with this SF exodus — I don’t think most are fully grasping the impact this will have.
The center of gravity for tech is a jump-ball at the moment.
And smart mayors like Miami’s
@FrancisSuarez
are jumping for it.
Venture Capital is a business predicated on the idea of being wrong 19 times out 20. The one win out of 20 massively making up for the rest.
Given that dynamic, you would think VC's would be less arrogant about the nonstop advice they espouse on Twitter. But nope
So much of startup/vc twitter is tweeting out "rules" for things that don't need rules.
Speaking in absolutes works great on Twitter. Listening to absolutes & accepting them as canon is a disaster.
@tedlieu
@SpeakerPelosi
@realDonaldTrump
@POTUS
How Trump thinks this photo makes him look good—and Speaker Pelosi look bad—I will never understand.
She looks confident & resolute. The sole woman at the table, literally standing up to the most corrupt President of our lifetime—perhaps ever.
The minimum form of an activity is usually overlooked, when it should be the default
10 min of daily exercise would change many lives—but most consider that an insufficient workout
Writing 1 pg of a novel sounds meaningless—It isn’t
Doing zero is infinitely less than something
San Francisco was a place for those looking to re-invent themselves
A place for change. For rebels. Round pegs in square holes. Weirdos, misfits, nerds. Loose marbles all rolling to one corner
Stay if you still feel it
But I lost that feeling
And found it again here in Miami
In a way, art NFTs reflect a growing nihilistic view on investing
They’re not a business where you can predict future cash flow. They’re a speculative gamble, bought in the hope a greater fool will pay more, couched in the conceit we’re being patrons of the arts by participating
The cube has arrived.
It’s so much heavier than I expected. The person in the mail room asked if I had ordered weights. She was very confused when I said it was a tungsten cube 😂
