Even when attending a wedding (circa 1990) Pratchetts will always look slightly scruffy. Not my colour, not his suit, but weโre both looking at the camera. Albeit in a slightly bemused way. He wouldโve been 76 today. GNU Dad. Happy Birthday.

I note that having not got over Atwood's betrayal, the GCs are trying to recruit Terry Practhett posthumously presumably because they know he can't contradict them.
This is in many ways a typical Pratchett photo - Mum is holding a cat, Iโm trying to pretend itโs not happening and Dad has boomerang sticking out of his head.
Come back, Dad. The world needs you. 7 years is long enough. โค๏ธ โฆ

8 years of missing you. This photo makes me laugh because itโs so un-Pratchetty. Weโre looking in the same direction & thereโs hugging (ish.) Itโs the kind of pic that, in a movie, one or other of us would look at wistfully before tooling up to go rescue the other

JK Rowling โ the greatest writer of her generation and one of the most successful women in modern history โ has been excluded from the BBCโs Platinum Jubilee 70 Greatest Reads.
They arenโt even trying to hide their bias.
We decided to treat ourselves to afternoon tea at the Ritz afterwards (extremely fancy and unprecedented for the Pratchetts) and my father got mistaken for a waiter. He was delighted.
Just found dadโs school report aged 12. Top positions in English, history, religious knowledge (surprising but then he did go on to write Small Gods) and metal work.
Bottom in maths and French.
PE โTries hardโ which is truly as athletically skilled as Pratchetts ever get.
Dadโฆ itโs been 9 years. In our family collection of blurry, squinty and poorly composed photos around the world, I found this - a typical Pratchett shot since we are 1)Not looking at the camera 2)focused on food and 3) embracing hat wearing. The trifecta. Miss you always. โค๏ธ
Hard to believe that he's been gone for 5 years. Partly because I carry the-Dad-in-my-head everywhere I go, which means I always have to order Bananana daiquiris whenever see them. This is how I like to remember him - laughing with a bird on his head.
This relentless policing of

It absolutely breaks me to hear my mum telling me sheโs sorry she couldnโt โsave dadโ as we snuffle and cry down the phone to each other. I am drowning my sorrows in alcohol (bananananana daiquiris) and animal fats. Itโs what he wouldโve wanted.
Sitting on a train and the lady two seats in front of me is talking very enthusiastically to her seat mate about dadโs work. And I am grinning away like a loon.
Musing on a doing a โRhi Readsโ series of blog posts on Narrativiaโs website where I read all of Dadโs books (some of which Iโll be reading for the first time) and write my thoughts on them, including personal anecdotes and Pratchett family titbits. Any interest in this, folks?
Well, it's been quite a couple of weeks. For my own mental health I'm going to be bowing out of the debate for a bit. Thanks to those who engaged with respect and good faith. I am forever learning. May Weatherwax and Vimes guide your steps.๐ณ๏ธโโง๏ธ๐ณ๏ธโ๐โค๏ธ
I know I've said this before, but naming your cat after your favorite author is a bit of a two edged sword because it's weird to have to shout "Sir Terry Prettchett get off the counter!"
โIf a pitch doesnโt convince Rhianna Pratchett and Rob Wilkins that it can distil Pratchettโs essence into its adaptation, then it has no right to exist.โ ๐
Yes, I know I use this picture (now actually attached!) of Nanny Ogg and Greebo living their best lives (by the fabulous

When Dad was part-time he wrote 400 words a day. Full time it was 1000 words no matter what. If he was having a v good day it could be anything up to 6k. But the Oblivion playing time, the tortoise polishing, the bubblegum for the brain was as important as the words on the page.
If it makes these folks feel better to think I'm a part-time writer, fine. In which case I'm a part-time writer who doesn't have to have another job. That's actually pretty cool.
Also, if typing is all you think qualifies as writing, well, okay, that's a choice you can make.

Twitter, I have done a bad thing. I expressed an extremely mild mannered disappointment in GTAV not having a female lead (a missed opportunity IMHO) and now I must pay. A.K.A. This week being-a-woman-in-games-on-the-Internet.
So, a๐งตfrom someone who has an inkling of how these things come about, and for those who might be interested to know how to avoid it. This isnโt a narrative issue in the way it might appear. IMHO it's come about due to narrative/level design & object placement misalignment. 1/16

'Privilege, which just means private law. Two types of people laugh at the law: those that break it and those that make it.' Sam Vimes in Night Watch, as ever, nailing the mood and the fact that too often those people are the same.
Abuse is never okay. And you are correct, he didn't say this. Because these sentiments are fear-mongering in the same vein as the ways in which LGBTQIA+ folks and other minorities have been demonised in the past. I support trans rights and I believe my father would too.

"I am totally cool with gender non-conforming kids being encouraged into lifetime medicalisation using drugs and surgery. And I'm fully in favour of death threats being sent to feminists who criticise this and defend women's sex-based rights"
...is something Pratchett never said
BTW Iโve no issue with Dad not being on the list. Itโs there to highlight, in part, lesser known authors across the Commonwealth. Which is laudable. It also doesnโt include greats like Tolkien & Wodehouse. But to suggest JKR isnโt on it just because of their views is ridiculous.
Bat Out of Hell was part of my childhood - Meat clutching a silk scarf, forward-rolling on stage, him as Eddie in Rocky Horror, Cher looking like a badass in Dead Ringer for Love. We had BOOH for the ending song at Dadโs funeral and we so needed it. GNU Meat Loaf. Thank you โค๏ธ
I put the memory my father said he never wanted to forget (the night I was born) into Rise of the Tomb Raider. Itโs in one of Richard Croftโs letters to young Lara.
I walked in front of his coffin holding it at his funeral (with correct hand positioning from the great
@SamanthaSwords
) whilst wearing a pair of Jimmy Choos, since Dad liked them and always said he imagined me clacking down the corridors of game studios, striking fear into devs.
โSometimes people leave you, halfway though the woods. Do not let it grieve you. No one leaves for good. You are not alone. No one is alone.โ GNU Stephen Sondheim. Will fondly remember the time when a trio of Pratchetts sobbed together in the third row during Into the Woods.
We played Bat out of Hell at the end of Dadโs funeral (and I thoroughly recommend ending such things on an โupโ song) and he also chose it as one of his songs on Desert Island Discs. It has a special place in my heart. A big GNU for Jim Steinman.
The way folks have been talking about

and her child is truly despicable. As is this manufactured controversy-for-clicks which seeks to centre JKR yet again. JH is a beacon of light and love and does not in any way deserve this. She has my support unwaveringly.
Feels like older male devs want to explore the facets of fatherhood and what it means to feel and break that bond. Older female devs are more like 'Yes! Send me into the wilderness with a cat and a load of books and a weapon made of my own teeth. FINAL CRONE FORM, MOTHERFUCKERS!'

Iโd say Dadโs world is rich specifically *because* of his characters. They are the pillars - Vimes, Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, Death, Moist, Rincewind, Tiffany Aching et al.
@LittleMissLizz
@woofknight
Potter's worldbuilding is flimsy because at its core, it's the story of a kid going to an elite boarding school and making friends. The fantasy element is just the specific flavoring.
A fantasy fan will prefer discworld, but for someone in it for characters, it won't work

MOVIE PITCH:
Dragons re-emerge in modern day Britain but, thanks to a long forgotten prophecy, โonly those who are knighted can slay a dragonโ.
So itโs Helen Mirren, Ian McKellen and others, playing themselves, fighting dragons.
Yes?
If that was really the case, then GCs would stop obsessing about trans people and which bathroom they use. If you want that to be the case, then clean house and stop the constant transphobia.
Rhianna's Dad wrote books packed with gender criticism, critiquing gender-stereotypes, critical of restrictive gender-roles...
Rhianna: Horrifying! Dad can't be gender critical!
The clue is in the words, Rhianna. Read. A. Dictionary.

Your obsession with โYes but what would her father think?โ has no bearing on this particular issue. He would want me to make up own mind with the kindness and empathy he and my mother tried to instil in me.
A Pratchett fav. We had a cat who had the given name of Taggart after Commander Quincy Taggart since they seemed to share the motto โnever give up, never surrender!โ But because vaguely sensible names never really stuck for long with us, he just got called Pongo.
Galaxy Quest is massively under-watched, especially because Alan Rickman *perfectly* captures the vibe of an actor who did a sci-fi show for a paycheck and then realises they're going to spend the rest of their life at conventions being asked about what really happened in ep 42
I wish that this quote wasn't so endlessly apt for the world over the last few years. This law is barbaric and evil. Being proud to support such a thing is utterly contemptable.
