People need to just stop. Twitter and my email are full of people blaming the NYSPHSAA sectional leaders and the state office staff. There is only one guy making the decisions depriving H.S. athletes of the chance to compete, and that is Andy Cuomo.
H.S. sports fans: Kiss the winter season goodbye. Mr. Cuomo's spot-zoning solution to "hot spots" injects such randomness into the ability to practice and play that the season isn't salvageable. The virus is real, the strategy is laughable.
The NYSPHSAA has announced that football, girls volleyball and fall cheerleading witll be moved to a March 1 start. I don't see any way that keeping other fall sports in place can be justified, but that's strictly opinion.
A proposal being put in front of the Executive Committee on Friday would have the way for NYSPHSAA schools to add a regular-season football game to the schedule, possibly as early as this fall.
Acting with emergency powers because the state legislature's dereliction of duty, Cuomo is a dictator in every sense except for his official title. He has changed course so many times on restaurants, gyms and salons that his credibility should be questioned but hasn't been.
Fifty points is literally an average night at the office for Joe Girard III. That, though, was no average finish, my friends. Great players make clutch plays when they're needed most, and JG3 delivered for his team and his town.
Does your school use an athletic trainer? There were two stories out of Section 1 yesterday illustrating how ATs do stuff a lot more crucial than taping ankles and icing bruises.
H.S. sports fans should familiarize themselves with the phrase "lawnmower parents." Ousted Honeoye coach Mark Storm fought back against one such set of parents and won a $50,000 settlement. Fascinating story:
With Spectrum having pulled back from televising most if not all state tournaments since the Time-Warner merger, NYSPHSAA is working on a plan to sub-license content to the NFHS Network. Final details yet to be hashed out. Some sections are already moving games to NFHS Network.
It's Day 1 of another H.S. sports year. Here's wishing for a fun, exciting and memorable year of competition and camaraderie. Most importantly, let's all be safe. There were too many tragedies and unfortunate injuries last year. Wishing all our athletes and coaches the best.
I know for a fact that there are H.S. coaches who set down rules that make it difficult for their kids to play other sports, but the real problems are (1) club coaches, who sometimes have financial motives and (2) parents fixated on chasing "full" scholarships that don't exist.
@nysswa
This all falls back on parents coach's at each sport not wanting kids to play another sport. As most only care about there own program. And not the athlete
Friends: It's my sad duty to report that the incomparable Neil Kerr, the co-founder of the New York State Sportswriters Association and its driving force for more than half a century, died today in Syracuse. He was 80. More:
Kudos to Syracuse Univ. for assisting the NYSPHSAA with moving the Class AA football title game from Sunday afternoon to Saturday night in the face of concerns about the weather. On a holiday weekend and with SU playing a home game, that was a class move.
Here's the link to the girls all-state soccer team as selected by the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports (NYSSCOGS):
Nothing in New York H.S. sports will change until Cuomo so. Don't blame the had-working sports administrators who have effectively been stripped of the power to do their jobs.
Coaches: If you haven't been paying attention, Maine has been plucking underappreciated players out of Upstate NY for the past several years and doing well with them.
Section XI is going to catch much criticism in the coming days for pulling the plug on the spring sports season, but it's absolutely the correct call. I'm holding out hope that some sections can salvage some of the season, but its simply not plausible in that region of N.Y.
Hey, N.Y. high school athletes: Wednesday is Coaches Appreciation Day. What are you going to do to honor the modified, JV and varsity coaches who have mentored you through the years?
A Glens Falls (JG3) vs. Batavia (Ray Leach) final would shape up along the lines of the 2004 Class AA clash between Syracuse CBA (Greg Paulus) and New Ro (Ray Rice), which was only one of the finest games in NYSPHSAA history.
Congratulations to Fairport H.S., the 2018-19 winner of the Kerr Cup All-Sport Championship. The Red Raiders won the most hotly contested race in the 11-year history of the New York State Sportswriters Association's competition for NYSPHSAA schools.
BREAKING: The New York State Public High School Athletic Association Executive Committee will hear a proposal Friday to add at-large teams to the state football tournament in three classes to end the awarding of quarterfinals byes.
The proposal on changing the sport calendar, effectively pushing back the start of sport seasons by one week, has been approved 12-10. That kicks into effect in August 2020.
Member schools will be receiving NYSPHSAA-branded signs this fall with a "Sportsmanship Is An Expectation" message aimed toward spectators. It's a small but important initiative with officials and coaches being berated so often.
Just received this incredible PSA from Saranac Lake Central School District related to poor sportsmanship - You have to watch it!

With everything that's been going on the last 72 hours, a milestone moment was able to sneak up on us here at the New York State Sportswriters Association. We'd like to express our sincere gratitude for helping us reach 10,000 followers on Twitter on Thursday.
It appears that Glens Falls has won back the NYSPHSAA boys basketball final fours for 2020-22. Executive Committee has final say, but having two groups today reach the same decision makes it all but certain.
The Boys Basketball Committee and the

office are both recommending the Cool Insuring Arena is Glens Falls to host the 2020-22 State Championships. Final vote belongs to the NYSPHSAA Executive Committee, who will meet in February.
Ryan Cole of Somers and Sebastian Regis of East Islip share New York State Sportswriters Association player of the year honors in Class A football. Full team here:
There is no aspect of school policy -- whether it's the learning or extra-curriculars -- that isn't frustrating the people of N.Y. and it's the governor making (and then unmaking) those decisions willy-nilly. If you're not screaming at him, then you're screaming at the wrong guy.
"I met my wife in the bleachers at Irvington HS. My 3 kids live in gyms," Kevin Devaney wrote this morning. Yeah, I admit it. That got the tears welling up in my eyes.
I know the suspense was killing you but, yeah, North Rockland junior Katelyn Tuohy is Gatorade's New York female cross country runner of the year again after another undefeated season.
Joe Girard III of Glens Falls repeats as the New York State Sportswriters Association player of the year in boys Class B basketball and makes the first team for the fourth consecutive season.
In case you missed it: The New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports released its all-state team for softball on Saturday:
Baldwin defeated Christ the King 58-49 for the Federation girls Class AA basketball championship. Christ The King had been ranked No. 1 nationally by USA Today.
There had been rumblings recently that something might be in the works. Unfortunately we now have confirmation. It appears News12Varsity is heading off in a new direction. Best wishes to Kevin & any colleagues who are similarly affected. They've done amazing work over the years.
Affirming the recommendations late last year by its basketball committee and the NYSPHSAA office staff, the Executive Committee has voted to return the boys tournament to Glens Falls for 2020-22.
The New York State Sportswriters Association has released its all-state team for boys basketball in Classes B, C and D. The large-school classes will be announced next week.
Glens Falls junior Joe Girard III is now the all-time
#NYSPHSAA
scorer in boys basketball and has pulled to within less than 100 points of NBA player Lance Stephenson for the overall state mark.
Track finds a way.
The Palisades Mall has one of the biggest underground parking garages in the US. With the mall at half capacity, and the garage closed to the public, where better to hold a track meet?
Years of Black Friday shopping can now count as track practice!

Point guards Joe Toussaint of Cardinal Hayes and Andre Curbelo of Long Island Lutheran share NYSSWA player of the year honors in boys Class AA basketball.
We ask your prayers for the Glorious Resurrection of Buffalo News high school reporter Miquel Rodriquez, who entered into eternal rest today. Please keep Miggy, his immediately family and his Buffalo News family in your prayers. He will be missed. Rest In Peace Miquel.
NYSPHSAA girls basketball coordinator Tim Lincoln is emphatic on wanting to stick with NCAA rules and says his committee has grown tired of having to defend their choice repeatedly in the past eight years.
There was a great moment in a wrestling tournament final Saturday night with a defending state champion passing up a chance to win by default. Instead, he allowed an injured opponent to finish off a victory.
I'm no expert on volleyball, but there's no way I'm putting my life on the line trying to block this kid at the net when we get back to playing 6-on-6 in the fall.
Easily the most discussed high school sports story of the week: Ex-Honeoye coach Mark Storm fought back against allegations made by disgruntled parents and landed $50,000 in a settlement.
I commend club programs that put their teen-level teams on hiatus during the H.S. season. They're under no obligation to do so, but it strikes me as wrong to force kids to either double up (at the risk of overuse injuries) or be made to swear their loyalty to one or the other.
Much smarter for a club team to encourage multi-sport athletes vs specializing for many reasons. We also respect HS Softball and our athletes limited time by shutting down Mar through early June. Not all club teams motivated by money and false hope.
The New York State Sportswriters Association will announce its all-state football team in the small-school classes at noon on Wednesday. The Class AA and A selections will be unveiled on Jan. 17.
Many "traditional" media outlets underestimated the power of the commercial Internet for a decade or longer. MSG/News12Varsity was one of the best when it came to identifying a strategic niche (exclusive H.S. content) and defending it. Sad to see it appears to be ending.
