Thread 🧵 on corporal punishment in Yeshivas: As a kid, I was one of the best (if not THE best) boys in my class (at least during Judaic studies). Yet even I was hit numerous times. One time, my teacher in 2nd grade smacked me so hard that I & my metal desk fell over sideways.

I can attest that over the last two decades, hitting in Yeshivas has become much less frequent. But to deny that it's still a common practice is nothing short of lying & gaslighting. It takes advantage of the fact that it's hard to prove what happens inside those insular walls.

To be clear, the decline in hitting is mostly a result of parents being angered (and occasionally bursting into the classroom to confront the teachers!). It is not because Yeshivas have explicit policies against hitting. In fact, Hasidic Yeshivas have few policies (or curricula).

There is a massive #GOTV campaign in various Orthodox magazines, calling for "an earthquake" by voting as "a bloc" against the "liberal agenda" which is "pro criminal, anti religious..." The campaign seems to be anonymous. No sign as to who is behind it. It just says "paid ad."

Governor Hochul made it on to the cover of a Haredi newspaper. Why? Because of the hundreds of millions $ she secured for Yeshivas? Nope. Because she hasn't agreed to meddle into @NYSEDNews efforts to ensure all schools, including Yeshivas, comply with the law.

This is interesting and will probably rattle quite a few Haredi Yeshiva defenders. On Zev Brenner's radio show, Prof @AlanDersh predicted that Haredi Yeshivas would not win outright in a SCOTUS showdown on secular education. At a minimum they'd need to compromise. #YeshivaGate
