This is, I’m afraid, wrong. A Ministerial Broadcast is customarily followed by a response from the Leader of the Opposition. It has been the case for decades.

I see absolutely no reason for this to be broadcast at the expense of the taxpayer. This isn’t party political. Boris Johnson didn’t make a statement as Leader of the Conservative Party. He addressed the nation as our Prime Minister. BBC have big questions to answer on this.

OK, enough of silence. Others have been braver and more honest. I’ve held off my direct criticism of Cummings for years, as I haven’t wanted to revisit the personal anguish he caused me when I was a Tory adviser. And, frankly, because I feared the consequences of speaking up.

I woke up expecting Cummings to have gone overnight. As the examples of heartbreaking sacrifices made by families during lockdown mount, every minister sent out to defend him is further tarnished, as is the government. This isn’t an SW1 scandal- it’s a personal insult to us all.

Tribalism in politics makes people do strange things, but loyalty to your party shouldn’t override personal integrity. We all know MPs and ministers who have been aghast at Cummings for years. The PM is being poorly served by someone who should never have been appointed.

Anyone with any experience of political comms can see what a disaster this is, how toxic is the charge of “one rule for us...”. It required a swift, fulsome apology and, probably, a resignation. Anyone with the best interests of the government at heart would have gone.

This is rather shocking. The footage in the hall showed Boff, a long-standing elected Conservative and current Chair of the London Assembly, quietly voicing his disagreement. He wasn't violent or disruptive. Yet is physically marched out by heavy-handed security and police.

@DPJHodges You’re crediting her with powers of self-reflection which have not been notably in evidence thus far.

Spending a lovely day (in between rain showers) at Windsor on a tour of Frogmore House and gardens in aid of @guidedogs . And especially delighted to bump into the fabulous Ingrid Seward- @RoyalBiographer - and the @MajestyMagazine team!

Been to have a look at the Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree- and to be fair, it’s not as bad as some of the pictures earlier made it seem.

It is rather amusing to see the many different ways people are getting their 1922 facts wrong. No, it isn’t the centenary of the 1922 Committee. No, the 1922 committee wasn’t named after this meeting. The committee was formed in 1923, by Tory MPs elected at the 1922 election.

If, as @IainDale speculates here, Penny ends up as PM, worth remembering that she promised, at the recent @forthemanypod live event, to make an ennobled Lord Dale her Secretary of State for Transport. Highways Agency beware…

I remember in 1975 the Heath government tried to throw Margaret Thatcher under a bus and put her up against Denis Healey in a Finance Bill debate. She wiped the floor with him, and a few days later Tory MPs voted for her to be their next leader,

I am truly honoured to be appointed to the Advisory Council on National Records and Archives, the statutory body which advises the Government on public record releases and national archives. As an historian & keen user of @UkNatArchives I’m very excited!

This new protocol of Mr Speaker and the Lord Speaker greeting honoured guests on the steps of Speaker's House for a photocall is rather a nice ceremonial touch. #Zelensky

Hello to all the new followers I seem to have acquired since my tweet correcting a Tory MP on a point of historical precedent. For balance, could some Labour, SNP and Lib Dem MPs please make some similar errors on arcane points of political and constitutional practice? Thanks.

In the spirit of promoting openness about #mentalhealth : I’ve suffered a bit of a setback recently with the return of rather nasty anxiety, after a number of years of being much better. It’s deeply frustrating. Positive vibes appreciated. 😕
