They met in Amman. One of them volunteered at UNHCR on her study year from @SOAS . The other walked out of Syria - widowed, heavily pregnant, toddler by the hand. 9 years on, thanks to resettlement, these two best friends can go camping in the Lake District together. My girls.

My comment for any further journalists re the #BibbyStockholm . If this was by suicide, WE MUST NOT BE SHOCKED. Suicides & attempts have been linked to the barge since August (yet denied by the HO) and are depressingly common in asylum accommodation. The signs were all there.

I've been told this evening that NO mental health support has been offered to the asylum-seekers on the #BibbyStockholm , not even those who were very immediately affected. Again, no one should be surprised. These people are of no consequence to the Home Office.

According to a letter from Sir Matthew Rycroft (HO perm sec) to Dame Diana Johnson (chair of HASC) on 12 Dec, CTM is paid £22,450,772 or over £44,300 per head for the barge. It wouldn't cost much more to send a child to Eton, where the board and lodging is somewhat better.

They may NEED to be off the barge over lunch, eg to travel to see a lawyer or family. So if they miss lunch, that's 9 hours without food. If they miss dinner as well (far from beyond the realms of possibility) they will be without food for 22 hours. /5

It's working! Campaigners forced ministers to axe plans for barges at Birkenhead & London. Suella Braverman admitted local opposition meant officials were drawing up plans to book more hotels. Hotels are awful, but better than RAF barbed wire or barges.

(1) not enough fire escapes (2) 10 bedrooms could not easily be opened from the inside (I suspect it's all, but only 10 were in use at time of audit) (3) staircases don't have enough venting to remove smoke (4) a fire wall had been compromised (5) regular fire drills are needed

The @ukhomeoffice has had the #BibbyStockhom at Portland Port for 35 days now. That's at a cost to the public purse of around £1,794,158 for that period. People were on board for 4.5 days, or 12.9% of that time. This is a MONEY-SAVING strategy?
