Collaboratively fighting large asylum-seeker containment sites in ex-RAF bases, former prisons & floating vessels. Linton-on-Ouse campaign. Ripon CoS 💪🏼 🇵🇸
Mariella Frostrup was kind enough to invite me onto Times Radio this lunchtime to talk about the
#BibbyStockholm
and the 3 million things that are wrong with this batshit plan.
Coverage of the judicial review application officially submitted on Friday, including intervew with claimant Carralyn Parkes. Thanks to

An expedited court hearing has been requested as it's a significant planning issue.
My briefing on retraumatisation caused by containing people on barges after deadly sea crossings:
- they may never have experienced open water before crossing
- they're now terrified of water
- they probably can't swim

🚨 Asylum-seekers on the
#BibbyStockholm
have no access to food for minimum 11 hours per day and report going to bed hungry. This is despite HO promises on the *media* tour in July that bread & soup would be available 24/7. CTM is paid over £44k per head for board & lodging. /2
@LouCalvey
It's tragic. But my first thought was that this was a WANT, not a NEED. The news item I saw was about a missing billionaire. Why do the wealthy have such a need to go where others don't/can't - space, the depths, Everest? These are expensive choices - whereas fleeing isn't.
Robert Jenrick has banned
@Care4Calais
from Napier and RAF Wethersfield. No haircuts, no clothes. And of course - most significantly - no caseworkers...
🚨 DELIGHTED to annouce that Mayor of Portland Carralyn Parkes has launched a legal challenge to the Home Office re
#BibbyStockholm
and is seeking a judicial review on planning grounds (in her personal capacity).

The HO press office asked Yorkshire Bylines to take down my article because it was 'full of inaccuracies'. I then gave YB evidence of EVERY SINGLE POINT, so they republished the article. How dare the HO bully titles, and expect them to be an extension of the gov't policy machine?
Here is a young man, with his whole life ahead of him, who was treated as a number and not a human being, and for whom the prospect of the Bibby Stockholm was simply too much. The
@ukhomeoffice
should feel deep shame – if it knows how.
BIBBY STOCKHOLM WILL COST MORE PER HEAD THAN HOTELS
When all costs are taken in account, it will be MORE expensive per head per day, as revealed in our new report co-published with
@Reclaim_The_Sea
Download the full report here
The
#BibbyStockholm
is an embarrassment. It arrived with a rotten hull, not fire-safe, riddled with Legionella, plumbing that doesn't meet regs, and no ability to connect to mains power.
A max of 39 men spent 4.5 days on board. Non-operational periods have cost well over £3m.
This is the most detailed information about the safety risks on board
#BibbyStockholm
#ShipOfSorrow
.
How can this possibly go ahead? It's political grandstanding that doesn't even work. And not only is it cruel - it's downright deadly.
Bibby Stockholm is a disaster waiting to happen - overcrowding, limited escape options, basic health and safety concerns, poor access for emergency vehicles - it's time to put an end to large-scale containment | Nicola David

Oh, Sue-Ellen.
Hard to see how they can integrate and learn English now you dump them behind barbed wire at RAF sites and tell them they can't leave, and ensure that the far right are whipped up to harrass them wherever they go, Was that YOUR family's experience?
"They are coming from abroad, they are not learning the language, they're not embracing British values."
Suella Braverman says there are some people "not taking part in British life" and that "we need to be fearless in calling that out".
Politics latest:
It would genuinely be cheaper, at this point (per head per night) to move the asylum-seekers from the
#BibbyStockholm
and give them a suite at the Savoy and buy them a slap-up fish & chip supper at Langan's.
They'd have a fiver left for the bus fare back to the Savoy, too.
⚖️ We're in the High Court in London on Tuesday to hear Alex Goodman KC
@workofanhour
ask the court for a judicial review of the HO's decision to use the Bibby Stockholm at Portland Port. Here are the details - all welcome to come and support!
🚨 OFFICIAL - BUT WHAT WE GUESSED ANYWAY
The
#BibbyStockholm
failed its fire inspection on multiple counts, and the fire service wants to be kept in the loop as cohorts grow. According to a report FOIed brilliantly by
@RefugeeAction

Somewhere out there is a family trying to make sense of the fact that life was worse here in the UK, for their child, than it was under the regime they fled.
#BibbyStockholm
Home Office holding refugees on the Bibby Stockholm in ‘quasi-detention’ - meets all 4 of the APPG Immigration Detention's criteria for quasi-detention. For people who have done nothing wrong.
HO & LA attempting to keep them on the barge - proof
Over £560k could have been used to employ 20 asylum decision-makers at the Home Office for a whole year. In just one month, 20 people could clear 80 claims - double the amount of people who were (briefly) on the
#BibbyStockholm
.
With just hours' notice, people are uprooted from their studies, churches and hospital treatments. For what? A display of disdain and power from the Home Office.
This is absolutely bloody brilliant! This the second PAP letter sent to the Home Office over the
#BibbyStockholm
; that means 2 known judicial reviews now, and I feel sure others will come. Way to go
@fbunational
- THANK YOU.
We knew it. And almost certainly in response to fire safety concerns.
The number of asylum-seekers on board the
#BibbyStockholm
is to be cut.
Most costs are fixed, so the cost-effectiveness of the scheme is being questioned after downsizing the cohort
What a resounding success the
#BibbyStockholm
has been so far. I hope no one ever asks
@ukhomeoffice
to organise a dust-up in a flour mill. Let's see what goes balls-up THIS time.
It's working!
Campaigners forced ministers to axe plans for barges at Birkenhead & London. Suella Braverman admitted local opposition meant officials were drawing up plans to book more hotels.
Hotels are awful, but better than RAF barbed wire or barges.
1,309 people felt strongly enough about the
#BibbyStockholm
court case to donate an amount large or small. We're still fundraising: back in court for a 'rolled-up hearing' (permission + possibly then a full JR) 27-29 Feb. Please support us if you can.
A whole month wasted out of the 18-month
#BibbyStockholm
contract. Sue Ellen is smashing it.
That's about £690,000 of our taxpayer dollaz.
Wait, wasn't this meant to be about value?
#ShipOfSorrow
#NoFloatingPrisons
Thanks,
@LouCalvey
! I *can* tell you what it costs per night for just 15 people on the
#BibbyStockholm
...
£110 per night in a hotel (on average)
£3,418 per night on the barge
Yeah, makes sense. If you're batshit crazy.
First 15 asylum seekers moved onto barge
15 frightened people.
@nic_d
wonder what your costings are on 15 people? Per night cost must run into the thousands… all to be seen to be vile to migrants.
What a disgraceful country we’ve become…
Every Briton - whether they know it or not - owes a debt of gratitude to the lawyers who fought the Rwanda plan. It's easy to mock lefty lawyers till you need one yourself; easy to let the gov't get away with horrors when it doesn't affect you directly. One day, it would.

From 2003-2014, Langham Industries (which owns Portland Port - which recently deleted its Twitter - and

No wonder they're happy to take the barge.
Proof:
My comment for any further journalists re the
#BibbyStockholm
. If this was by suicide, WE MUST NOT BE SHOCKED.
Suicides & attempts have been linked to the barge since August (yet denied by the HO) and are depressingly common in asylum accommodation. The signs were all there.
Important story from the Guardian - the 39 men on the barge have written an open letter about what it was like to be on board. Imagine with 506 people, not 39. Imagine for more than 4.5 days.

🧵 😲 Seems that Aussie firm CTM has squeezed enough profit from their £1.6bn contract (for managing hotels + ONE barge) to be able to subcontract managing the barge to the unheard-of Landry & Kling, a American firm (so multicultural!). So much profit margin to spread around!
Impossible to imagine what this would do to you. We all have just one life to live - and the HO screws it over, and doesn't care. There's no do-over - this is the only life this man will have.
27 months in immigration detention. 27 months barred from contributing, caring for family, working. 27 months of public funds paying to keep him locked up. 27 months and Braverman’s Home Office doesn’t know when it will decide his application to remain

It's been less than a week and only £382 to go! 688 spectacular people have already pledged.
Who can help us over the line so we reach the £15,000? (Otherwise we don't get any of it!)
🚨 Home Office has been accused of wasting millions buying an immigration detention site.
It paid £15.3m for the Northeye site at Bexhill - but 13 months earlier, developers bought it for only £6.31 million - so they flipped it for £9m profit (142% ROI)

I've been told this evening that NO mental health support has been offered to the asylum-seekers on the

Again, no one should be surprised. These people are of no consequence to the Home Office.

#ShipOfSorrow
According to a letter from Sir Matthew Rycroft (HO perm sec) to Dame Diana Johnson (chair of HASC) on 12 Dec, CTM is paid £22,450,772 or over £44,300 per head for the barge. It wouldn't cost much more to send a child to Eton, where the board and lodging is somewhat better.
"Plans to house thousands of migrants in new and cheaper accommodation could face new setbacks, after reports the Bibby Stockholm barge has not received approval from local fire services."
They may NEED to be off the barge over lunch, eg to travel to see a lawyer or family. So if they miss lunch, that's 9 hours without food. If they miss dinner as well (far from beyond the realms of possibility) they will be without food for 22 hours. /5
HOW INCREDIBLE
Australian ethical fund Future Super is to sell its shares in Australian firm CTM (which has the contract to manage the

MORE OF THIS FROM BUSINESSES, PLEASE

Campaigners forced ministers to axe plans for barges at Birkenhead & London. Suella Braverman admitted local opposition meant officials were drawing up plans to book more hotels.
Hotels are awful, but better than RAF barbed wire or barges.
Just imagine putting people without hope in small cabins on a BARGE, sharing with complete strangers, surrounded by water, little chance to get off port, a 'compound' to exercise in. With self-harm in mind, will they jump in the water?
#NoFloatingPrisons
🚨THIS is a key question, 2nd only to safety.
If HO must significantly reduce the number of people on
#BibbyStockholm
, the cost per head/per night will be an absolute joke - could easily be £200. So much for cutting the daily hotel bill! Humiliating.
Mass-containing traumatised people ANYWHERE is despicably inhumane, but there's an extra dimension when you put them on water.
We need to stop the barges. Thankfully, more and more ports are saying NO.
#NoFloatingPrisons
#ShipOfSorrow
@BibbyMarine
So much for Rishi Sunak promising to end the 'eye-watering' cost of hotels at £5.6m a day - turns out the

🚨 After the suicide on
#BibbyStockholm
last week, I was told by someone on board of a further attempt on Friday night & another on Sunday evening. There was also a seizure in a public space on Saturday afternoon. Nothing but emergency vehicles all week. Pic: min 4 cars on Friday
The Mayor of Portland is taking the Home Office to court over the
#BibbyStockholm
. She says they should have sought planning permission - and would have been refused if they had.
If you'd like to know more, the essential grounds are laid out here.
(1) not enough fire escapes
(2) 10 bedrooms could not easily be opened from the inside (I suspect it's all, but only 10 were in use at time of audit)
(3) staircases don't have enough venting to remove smoke
(4) a fire wall had been compromised
(5) regular fire drills are needed

The
