it’s been 25 years since my favourite film, 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU, was released in cinemas! to mark the occasion, i wrote about heath ledger’s cheeky smile and how the film perfects the art of the modern shakespeare adaptation for

after weeks of sharing violently racist and islamophobic posts on instagram, amy schumer is currently happily promoting her role in the trolls, a children’s film. meanwhile,
Wael Al Dahdouh.
Yara Eid (pictured with Ibraheem M. Lafi, killed on October 7th wearing his press vest).
and the 70+ journalists and their families who have been killed over the last eight weeks, too many to fit in one picture.
My person of the year? The people of Palestine.
always love that James McAvoy brings this up whenever he can because he’s right. there is no nurturing of young talent in underfunded/privileged cities. the british entertainment industry is an ecosystem fuelled and funded by the privately educated, wealthy few for their own.
if they wanna talk about nepo babies, bring my man to the table as one of the panel because he has talked about it for more than a decade in many many interviews eventho he is friend with dozen of nepo babies and posh actors. im sure he has a lot to say
“but they were always nice to me” is quite literally the mindset that keeps the cycle of abuse in hollywood (and society in general) going. dakota johnson is gross for this
Evan Rachel Wood’s testimony is one I will never be able to forget. this is horrifying and just so demoralising to witness. sending nothing but love and solidarity to her and all survivors that are being forced to relive their trauma because of this case ♥️
Marilyn Manson is now suing Evan Rachel Wood for defamation over her claims of abuse. The Johnny Depp/Amber Heard case has bigger implications for victims coming forward than people realize. And keep in mind Depp and Manson are close friends.
there’s a scene in THE BIKERIDERS where the camera lingers on austin butler’s face as he flirts with jodie comer by staring at her in silence & slowly smiling. at LFF, you could literally hear everyone in the room giggling and blushing. you can’t get a reaction like that at home!
Disney is no longer set to release ‘THE BIKERIDERS’.
New Regency is now looking for a new distribution partner for the film and is considering all release possibilities, including a streaming release.

people are (rightly) pointing out that emerald fennell’s socioeconomic background is likely a key reason why her films fall flat and her response is “male directors aren’t held to such scrutiny”… lol. will white women ever tire of that excuse
where’s that audio of greta talking about how the studio didn’t like this slow-mo shot so she tested it on an audience and when this scene came on everyone in the room gasped and she was like “because that’s how we feel about timothée!! and that’s okay 🥰”
absolutely incredible that this came together in six weeks. proof that even in the face of loud antagonism and attempts to censor or suppress solidarity for Palestine, community will always prevail. so much respect for everyone involved in this!
Kosar Ali is such an exciting new talent. equally exciting is her personal style - i always look forward to seeing her fits. incredibly disheartening to learn that designers are unwilling to adjust to her request for modesty when seeking out red carpet looks. it’s not hard!
Olivia Rodrigo says the scrutiny she faced from legal issues with 'SOUR' didn’t make her second-guess writing 'GUTS':
"I feel like now I know so much more about the industry and I just feel … better equipped in that regard. It wasn’t something I thought about too much."
when did pop stars become so cowardly in their politics? we used to have george michael giving interviews opposing the Iraq war, now we have harry styles tweeting “vote with kindness❤️” and calling it a day 🥴
BIG on this. it’s so crazy that we all praised how accessible film festivals became during the pandemic but as soon as restrictions were lifted, they just went straight back to the old system. exclusivity in all the wrong ways for all the wrong reasons imo
there should be a virtual option EVERY year imo. not just for people who the pandemic disproportionately affects, but poor people as well. how are young writers supposed to come up with the money for travel and accommodation?
ok i finished jury duty. imagine being truman show-ed and your only form of post production support is james marsden calling you to tell you life is real and you’re gonna be okay
Regina King is coming for ALL the awards, fellas, be warned. ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI is touching, inspiring and all the rest of it, but the most impressive part is maybe how King handles four heavyweight names with a kind of mastery you’d expect from a longtime director.

hello from the GLASS ONION
#LFF
press conference! highlights included: Kate Hudson and Daniel Craig messing around, and Kathryn Hahn making a Notting Hill joke which made Craig cry from laughter 😭
i just feel like “The king is profiting from the deaths of thousands of people in the north-west of England” should be a sentence that never leaves our brains
i don’t care about whatever everyone’s arguing about but i will say that leading men in the 40s/50s/60s were so attractive in an ugly way and we’ve lost that now. who’s doing the work to preserve THIS aspect of film history huh
THE BIKERIDERS: very enjoyable. like a sweet ode to classic scorsese. jodie comer is fantastic (as usual), tom hardy is hilarious (as usual), and austin butler is very pretty to look at (as usual) 😁

Martin Scorsese says “I’m old. I read stuff... I want to tell stories, & there’s no more time.”
“Kurosawa, when he got his Oscar… he said, ‘I’m only now beginning to see the possibility of what cinema could be, and it’s too late…’ Now I know what he means.”

to all the politicians, the celebrities, the influencers who pretended this “global day of jihad” was anything more than a justification for islamophobic violence: blood is on all of your hands. know that every day you get to live is a day you stole from this child
So the dumbest most racist white people across the country just invented a “global day of jihad” for Friday the 13th, bosses & employers told their employees to be safe on the “global day of jihad,” social media let it spread, and now a Muslim child in Chicago has been murdered.
BONES & ALL — I winced. I yelped. I gagged. I had a blast. there’s a scene where Timothée Chalamet says “I ate him the fuck up” and I laughed so hard. walked away from this one feeling unbelievably nauseous and extremely unsettled. that’s cinema, baby

when this article was doing the rounds, all i could think was… obviously. we can say we want a change in the culture of exclusivity that the UK industry runs on, but when that isn’t supported by local programmes + funding for the youth, what good is it?
in season 1 of succession logan tells shiv she’s marrying beneath herself because she’s scared of being betrayed and then season 3 ends with her being betrayed by tom anyway…… insane show
feel like they need to change best actor in a comedy to something like ‘best comedic performance’ because jeremy allen white was not performing comedy in the bear
anyway. i found saltburn to be smug, self-satisfying, and wilfully ignorant of the intersection of race and class — mainly because the film isn’t actually interested in a class discussion at all. the film equivalent of “great gowns, beautiful gowns”
i’ve studied so much gothic literature and film in my time and listen… INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE is one of the best modern additions to the genre. just such a rich text overflowing with an abundance of respect for the genre whilst also carving out its own space. lovely stuff
no but it’s the way the Mangrove Nine trial literally wasn’t that long ago and yet we weren’t taught a single thing about it at school. and Boris is out here yapping about how we should be proud of our past

everyone who made bridgerton spent hours and hours working hard to make that show just for jobless people like me to watch the entirety of season 2 in two days
THE POWER OF THE DOG is haunting, and intimate, and slow in just the right way. The tenderness with which Jane Campion is able to capture so many complex emotions is amazing. One of Benedict Cumberbatch’s best performances for sure
#LFF
Everywhere I go, I am haunted by the sound of Benedict Cumberbatch’s creepy whistling. And I kind of love it 👀

no movie stars? no problem!
bring back rom-coms and i’m certain we’ll find the real stars of this generation.
more love! more romance! more, more, more! 🥰🍿
speaking of rom-coms… now THIS is a rom-com. falling in love in New York? chemistry between the two leads? a lead character with impeccable dress sense? this film truly has it all! Something From Tiffany’s has restored my faith in the modern rom-com. i’m in LOVE
@kaiyashunyata
yes! although i do sense that there’s a certain level of pity that scorsese feels towards ernest, even if it isn’t felt by the audience (there was a moment during the screen talk where he was explaining how he believes ernest really loved molly and everyone was just silent LMAO)
completely unrelated to any recent news, here are some female directors who released films this year who i’d love to hear from:
Mia Hansen-Løve (ONE FINE MORNING)
Alice Diop (Saint Omer)
Laura Poitras (ALL THE BEAUTY)
Halina Reijn (BODIES BODIES BODIES)
Frances O’Connor (EMILY)

posting about sports or music feels so ridiculous when you get a news notification about the thousands of palestinians being slaughtered with no end in sight
As culture writers or people who work in the media industry broadly I do think we need to read the room and discard talking about an artists latest project when crimes against humanity are unfolding like this
I think If Beale Street Could Talk is thee most perfect example of a film where absolutely every aspect of filmmaking is used to tell the story. if i ever gave a lecture on how to make a film, that’s the film i would use as my example. barry jenkins is insane
btw it was phenomenal. far superior to season 1, and it’s not even a question. jonathan bailey and simone ashley pls call me i think we could be great friends x
i really can’t believe how quickly the world just defaulted back into this position. it’s like everyone was just waiting for the opportunity to get right back to dehumanising muslims with impunity
A twelve year old girl had her hijab pulled off in the park near my house today by a grown ass man. I've had to have conversations with my baby cousins about considering maybe not wearing their hijabs when they're walking home from school. A new generation of girls, traumatised.

when they played scenes from Mean Streets/Taxi Driver during his LFF talk, we were all sat there watching him react to his own films. De Niro did his “you talkin’ to me?” and Scorsese was sat there nodding his head, impressed as if he were watching it for the first time 😭
Francesca Scorsese says her father, Martin Scorsese, sometimes watches his films as though he’s never seen them before:
“Something will happen and he’ll be like, ‘Ha! That’s great.’ And I’m like, ‘You literally made this.’”
romcoms are failing is bc everyone treats romance as a flimsy genre and the “leading men” are too busy doing up superhero nonsense to actually prove themselves as leading men by carrying a romcom with charm and wit. also people keep hiring hot people without doing chemistry tests
the way 90% of romcoms made in the past decade have been shit ☹️ at least back in the day even the bad romcoms were entertaining. nowadays they’re just hollow and depressing
