Last week, we celebrated
@WorldHijabDay
at work with the students.
I faced islamaphobia at school where other children would pull my hijab down, call me names and tell me to go back to where I came from (I was born here). It all. made me feel like I didn’t belong.
I’m striking today because I love being a teacher and love how we have the privilege of changing lives of the young people. I’ve been teaching since 2009 and it’s never been as bad as this. We can’t do the job we love without the funding & with current pay and conditions.
@NEUnion
"So you’ve got to find the tools within yourself to feel visible, and to be heard, and to use your voice." This is what I will tell myself and others when that inner critic rages.

So I’m currently reading A Thousand Splendid Suns with Year 11s and they seem to be really enjoying it! I saw one student reading it while walking to her next lesson and a couple others won’t stop asking me questions about it outside of class. Just perfect. ❤️
Let us Muslim women define ourselves rather than trying to define us in the way that suits your own narrative. We do not fit in to your boxes and even if I did, I’m claustrophobic.
7 months since my dad passed away and I’m still heartbroken.
He was the best. When I used to travel to college and uni, he would drop me off and pick me up from the bus stop. When it rained, my dad would be standing there with an umbrella. Selfless in every way. Miss you abba.💔
I’ve just caught up on what’s been happening at a school regarding prayer ban.
It’s easy to supervise a prayer space by having a staff member on duty there.
I will repeat: islamaphobia is rife and it’s in our schools, offices and everywhere we look.
Lovely PLN I have some news. Today, I found out that I will Assistant Headteacher leading English
@FgcsInfo
! I am really excited! Thank you
@MissTBegum
@Msmiley8
@charlottewhela
for giving me this opportunity. 1/4
One of my fave moments
#rEDBrum
was a chat with a lovely Year 10 student
@brown_andrew86
.
S: “Miss are you Bengali?”
Me: “Yes I am. Are you?”
S: “Yes Miss. Are you presenting?”
Me: “Yes I am presenting”
S: “Oh cool. That’s really good Miss.”
My ♥️ melted.
‘To Allah we Belong and To Allah We Return.’ My beloved dad passed away yesterday 💔
He was the love of my life and my guiding light. To honour his memory, we’re raising money to build water wells in Bdesh and would really appreciate any donations:
As a petite hijabi woman, I’ve noticed people assume I lack leadership presence. LP is not about the way you look, it’s about being authentic, intentional and serving others. Looking forward to exploring more tomorrow
@WomenEdLondon
Week 1 of Deputy Headship & I’m shattered. It’s been interesting though leading another area of school improvement.
I’ve been meeting and listening to the pastoral team, planning centralised detention, centralising LM for pastoral team and planning our ‘Push for Punctuality’.
Before the start of a new term, I write down all the things I’m looking forward to in the term ahead, both personal and professional.
I then write down what I’m anxious or worried about and what actions I’ll take/who I will seek support from which tends to help.
🧵Through coaching, I realised that I was always seeking perfection as a leader for fear that people would take my areas of dev. as weaknesses and question my leadership capabilities. Since then, I have tried to share some of my own areas of development to model vulnerability.
Ramadan Mubarak!
Not only do we abstain from food and drink, we increase our prayers and charitable acts. We also use this month as a time of reflection to help us increase our taqwa (faith).
I’m thinking about everyone suffering in Gaza and around the world.

It’s my husband’s birthday today.
I’m celebrating him for his kindness, respect, joy, advocacy, and most importantly because he goes to every edu conference I go to even though he’s no longer a teacher. If you’ve ever met me at a edu event, you’ve met him.💜😂🙈🥳
I tried to be cool last night but I can’t be cool anymore. I love you PLN but my role model Michelle Obama retweeted with a comment and I just can’t stop staring at her claps. Poor
@mrmiah11
had to deal with my excitement last night.

😂🤯🤩
Today marks the 5th anniversary since my mum’s passing and I miss her every day. Hope the life I lead is one she would be proud of and happy with.
May Allah grant her the highest ranks and reunite in Jannah. Ameen. Please keep her in your prayers and thoughts today. 💔
I’m overwhelmed by the support on
#edutwitter
so thank you. It still feels surreal to see my name on the front cover of a book.
I was close to giving up after my dad’s passing but now I’ve decided to use the book to honour him and my mum. My first (and best) teachers. ♥️
What sparks joy? For me, it’s supporting others’ practice! Here’s my session for ECTs on Metacognition. Thank you to the brilliant
@FunkyPedagogy
and
@EducEndowFoundn
and
@AlexJQuigley
for the fantastic strategies. I told our ECTs to buy your fab book Jenny! Thank you!
Of course
@stormzy
is right about racism.I should know having faced it my whole life. Being told to go home even though I’m born and bred here, is something I’m used to. Being told I’m a problem because of the colour of my skin and my religion, is something I’m used to.
3 years without our beautiful, wise, knowledgeable, kind, giving, generous, witty amma (mum). All I am is because of who she was as a human, a woman and a mother. She taught me to live life fearlessly and faithfully and authentically. May Allah grant you Paradise. Ameen. 💔
Eid Mubarak to everyone celebrating tomorrow or Thursday!
This Ramadan has been so different as we’ve been thinking about brothers and sisters in Gaza. May Allah accept our fasts and ease the pain and suffering of all.
Have a great day!
Holidays are strange without my parents. 💔
Every year, my mum would make the most delicious food. Though we don’t celebrate Christmas, it was a time to get together, eat and laugh.
Hold your loved ones close because soon you may only have the memories.
Today, I remembering my favourite human, my dad. He loved the beach and water and just being silly.
I can’t quite believe it’s been 2 months today since he passed away. Please keep him in your prayers and thoughts. 💕
Here’s my presentation from
@rEDSurrey2022
on Coaching and how to embed both Executive and Instructional Coaching so that ALL staff benefit from both or either models.
Both include
@EducEndowFoundn
effective PD mechanisms so why not?
While I am nervous and excited about my new role in January, I’m feeling sad about temporarily letting go of my current role leading Teaching and Learning. I’ve loved it so much.
I’m reflecting on what we’ve achieved over the last year and a half and some of the big things incl:
Enjoyed delivering this week’s T&L briefing introducing our focus on this half term: ‘Empowered Readers, Empowered Learners.’ Thank you to
@AVisserFuray
@AlexJQuigley
@mshmalik_1
. We’ll also explore strategies to increase reading fluency, support weaker readers and empower all.
Conversation this week with a student that made me teary and reminded me why I love SB:
Student: Madam, is it true you’re leaving?
Me: No of course not.
Student: Ok good. Madam, are you now Deputy Headteacher?
Me: Yeah, I am.
Student: Madam so proud of you seriously.
Me: 🥹
It’s Father’s Day today and 8 months tomorrow since my dad passed away.
He was the best man, dad, advocate and our number 1 supporter.
He was the dad who would walk down and wait at the bus stop for me every day so that I wouldn’t have to walk alone because I was scared.
Thank you to everyone who attended my
@researchEDBrum
presentation! The tech stressed me out and I missed a few things! Here’s the pdf version of the updated slides for you all. Feel free to drop me a message if you have any questions. 😊

I finally finished The Midnight Library (yep I know it’s early) and I’m so sad it is over. It really is a life affirming and beautifully written book. As Nora realises, our Book of Regrets, however heavy, won’t change our life. Only we can by living it. Thank you!
I love teaching about diversity and how Britain is wonderful because of it. Schools shouldn’t be treated the same as a Woolworths store where people can pick ‘n’ mix the parts of diversity they want young people to know. Treat all with love and respect.
#diversityEd
We all know how much I love a socratic seminar to get students talking and discussing their ideas!
@LitdriveUK
@FunkyPedagogy
I’ve taught them your rule of 3 things about 3 things and it’s really helped improved their analysis so thank you!
Leadership is not just a title to be held, it’s a responsibility. Who do we serve? Ourselves or others? As a Muslim, I see leadership as an amanah, a trust, given to me to serve and contribute to the school and wider community.

How wonderful to watch

Today is the one year anniversary of my dad’s passing and I really miss him.
He was the best dad.
He would call me daily to check if I’d got home from work and since his passing, there have been many times where I’ve called him after work forgetting he’s no longer here. 💔
I enjoyed sharing ideas about how to implement dialogic teaching through socratic debate. Thank you
@FunkyPedagogy
for recommending me. I hope i’m making my NQT mentor Teresa proud! I was nervous to share a virtual stage with legends but
@WomenEd
’s 10% braver helped!

Visitor at reception: “Excuse me, you look really familiar.”
Me: “Oh hello”
Visitor: “Are you Miss Bibi?”
Me: “Yes I am. Did you work at another school with me?”
Visitor: “No, you were my form tutor at LIS when I was in Yr 7!
Me: Oh wow! Hello! How old are you now?
S: “21”! 😱
I’m editing aspects of my book and the chapter on ‘Managing Workload and Wellbeing’ is making me reflect on what I need to do myself!
This is the book I needed myself as a new teacher and I really hope it helps others too!

My sister in law is getting married so it’s been a busy start to the holidays for us.
First event: mendhi! Here’s our sweet and savoury table set up with all the food by made us.
I made the pani puri, the dynamite prawns and the jelly shots. MashaAllah I’m quite proud of it!🎉
Why aren’t we talking more about
#Menopause
in schools? It impacts us all and yet there’s nothing much within the education system about how to educate our Ss and help our colleagues.
@nickybright
I’ve found your subchapter so informative & insightful

On Thursday, I spoke at the
@ThePiXLNetwork
English Festival on the main stage. I spoke about Daring and Thriving in Leadership and my own experience. I initially had a speech written down.
Here it is: …

@WomenEd
🧵I ♥️ teaching The Merchant of Venice. I fell in love with this play during A-level Lit back in 2004. Our class was mostly Muslim female teens exploring religious discrimination &more post 9/11. Instead of assuming we knew nothing, my lecturer Noel, asked us about what we knew.
I’m looking to deliver a mini online course on being interview ready for teachers, aspiring middle leaders and aspiring senior leaders from the global majority. Would that be of interest to anyone?

I’m struggling with imposter syndrome because my inner critic keeps telling me I’m not good enough to write a book.
So instead of listening to her, I’m using today to write and draft.
@Ethical_Leader
told me to stop being a perfectionist which was needed! Thank you! ✍️
From Jan, I will temporarily be going down to part time hours in order to care for my unwell dad. I am so fortunate to work in a school with the most supportive and inspirational leaders and colleagues in the country. Thank you for everything.

Delighted that I’ll be speaking at the

Have you seen this from incredible

In the lead up to
@researchED1
, I was nervous as a first time speaker at the National conference.
@tombennett71
Thank you to everyone who attended my session yesterday, especially those on the floor in the sweltering heat. 💜
Here are the slides:
I had a really exciting phone conversation yesterday with the wonderful
@MaryMyatt
. I can’t quite believe it but I’m really looking forward to collaborating Mary!
Today would have been my dad’s 86th birthday. 1 January 2023 now marks the beginning of the first year without him but I recognise how lucky I was to have him for as long as I did. He was the person who taught me about unconditional love. Happy birthday abba. 💔
What a gentleman and inspiration you are
@MusharafAsghar
.
Thank you for sharing your story and sharing the importance of diversity in and beyond the classroom. As someone who is neurodiverse, it was incredibly powerful.
