My favorite PhD moment:
Me (2nd year): "I don't think I am making enough progress; when I look at other lab members, they are much ahead of me."
Him: "Mohit, different people are good at different things. Don't be so harsh; you'll do well."
Can we share our
#mentorship
stories?
As a 1st year PhD student , I thought of following criteria to find a suitable lab. However, what ended up impacting my PhD journey the most was how supportive my PhD mentor was.
Thus, I encourage everyone starting a PhD to learn how supportive the lab PI & environment is. (1/n)
It has been an overwhelmingly challenging MS/PhD application season for me - uploaded 240 letters (& counting) for 25 Bachelors/Masters students (Bio,Maths,Physics,CS,ChE backgrounds) who are working/have worked with us in past 2-3 years. Hoping for best outcomes for all of them!
New year;new responsibilities - Editor-in-Chief at NPJ Systems Biology & Applications. Welcoming submissions (research/review) developing experimental/computational tools/methods/models to elucidate biological emergent phenomenon at a systems-level. Please DM me for any questions

"The key to running a healthy and productive lab can be summarized in a single word: happiness." It well summaries the discussion I have with PhD students after meme-based talk - "If you are happy, you will be productive; so identify what keeps you happy".
Stoked to share our

My favorite mentor moment:
I was visibly tired in the lab on a Friday. A student came in and said: "Mohit, you are always asking us how we are doing. I wanted to tell you that in case you are stressed for any reason(s), you can talk to me/us."
Felt so fortunate!
@PhDsofIndia
What a great
#HappyTeachersDay2020
gift! Humbled to receive 1000+ citations in 2020 (2nd calendar year in a row now). Grateful to the entire academic community, colleagues & collaborators for recognizing our work, and to all the team members who make it possible
@SMB_MathBiology
Academic version of "chalo is dosti ko rishtedaari mein badal dein" [Lets elevate our friendship to a relationship] ->
Collaborator to me: "I will be happy to have your (BS/MS) student as a graduate student in my lab."
or "I will be happy to have your PhD student as a postdoc."
Elated & proud to see
@shuba_raghu
giving the FIRST PhD colloquium from our group. Blessed to have such a student, especially as a young PI! It still seems like yesterday (but actually it's been 4 years). Many congratulations & wishing you the very best. Charge, Shuba!
@BSSE_IISc
A delightful surprise in lab today - belated birthday celebrations planned by the group! Lucky to have y'all around who'd go the extra mile in making me feel special & also think of adorable, rib-tickling, mischievous gifts! Happiness = working in team with shared sense of humor!
After the improv talk
@IndSciFest
, I am thinking of preparing a scientific talk on our research using mostly memes/movie/TV show screenshots. 2 questions: a) Is there an audience? b) Any organisation/institution willing to host such a talk? Plz RT/DM

1/ Happy to share our latest review on how cancer drug resistance can emerge from collective behavior in cancer cells, & non-genetic mechanisms such as multistability & stochasticity. Can we unlearn that cancer is just a bunch of individual renegade cells?

Biological regulatory networks are large & complex, but converge to only a few distinct phenotypes. Why?
We look at networks across many contexts - EMT, pluripotency, gonadal cell-fate, neuroendocrine differentiation - to answer this question.

Happiness is when your PhD mentor tells you in front of your students - "You've been doing great; publishing in journals where I've never gotten earlier". Just talking to him even today gets me out of occassional

Anecdote -
Student: I am getting married in first half of my PhD. Will it delay my PhD?
Advisor (yours truly):
The feeling of joy and gratefulness when your first-author paper crosses 500 citations. This milestone is special for many reasons: a)
@FrontOncology
had no IF in 2015, b) Hybrid E/M states were not much studied till 2015 & c) my PhD co-advisor passed away during its peer review.
Thoroughly enjoyed interacting with school kids & their parents, science popularisation colleagues, and BS/MS/PhD students at this public talk
