Large-scale trespass into a private quarry, folks getting injured falling down the slope, getting caught on barbed wire, damaging the finder’s car by moving logs placed to prevent parking, & Lee Evans in an ill-fitting hi-viz on traffic duty, is surely Peak Twitching? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The top map shows the worst case emissions scenario (RCP 8.5) predicted for Dec 2023 in Dec 2014. Bottom map shows actual Dec 2023. Figs are of temp anomaly from 1979-2000 data. This is definitely not a good thing.

People don’t like seeing genocide daily. And when they learn about the West Bank, settlers, land and homes being stolen, they start to see things differently. When they see children being shot, infrastructure wantonly destroyed, they become angry. Things are changing.

@ShamaTatler
Could you explain what the antisemitic graffiti said?
Several sources have told me you don’t tell the truth all that often, so I can’t just take your word for it…
@LBC
@mrjamesob
The UK establishment appear to be rather relaxed about the imminent further ethnic cleansing. This is going to look utterly appalling in a few years time.
I enjoy seeing rare birds on my TG42 patch, but away from there, I’m happy to see photos of rare birds that are long distances away. No need to physically “be there”.
Much cheaper, much better for the planet, and leaves the day free to do plenty of other things. 👍😁
Israel has destroyed all universities in Gaza, most hospitals, people in their homes, people escaping on roads, journalists at home, & most infrastructure. All of it intentional. No building is undamaged. As Jeremy Bowen said “If Hamas was targeted they must have been everywhere”
Emissions for Antarctica tour = 6T for the ship & 4T for flights. 10T plus the usual annual UK emissions = SIX times the amount to accord with Paris commitments.
Why is a conservation event pushing these & after praising low-carbon birding, why are birding orgs so quiet?
There’s never been a better time to visit Antarctica - not least due to the increasingly rapid loss of ice sheets as the climate warms due to the emissions of the wealthy.
Pop along to the Birdfair for your choice of Antarctica trips - because you’re worth it!
Earlier I tweeted that Corbyn hadn't condemned Hamas for the attack on 7th October. Many people came back at me to say he had. And yes, they are right. He did condemn it, so my tweet was wrong. But it remains a fact that his long-held support for Hamas is totally wrong.
We could stop making programs about the problems nature & the planet face, & start making programs explaining what we can do - stop flying, drive less, stop eating meat & generally adopt low-carbon lifestyles? It’s insane that we aren’t doing this!
@ClimateHuman
I’d look into Mr Navalny a bit deeper first. He wasn’t as our media present him. He had many very unfortunate elements to his character and past actions / comments.
These are dismissed as him being “complex”.
Hopefully back to normality in TG42 today, if kite doesn’t return. Crazy few days, plenty of good bits but a lot of damage done by an idiotic minority(?). Individual gratification trumps all - could be our epitaph. Kite pic 👌

A stress-free, non-tiring, walk/cycle in the fresh air yesterday. Didn’t see any rares, didn’t give £££ to Shell, didn’t add to a list, didn’t add to atm CO2, didn’t spend hours in a car, wasn’t “educational” and didn’t see any “familiar faces”. Had a superb day though. 👍😁
@ChrisGPackham
Maybe best to stop flying to Africa and doing photo shoots for the billionaire press then. And be very vocal about why. This will have a major impact on your audience.
Beeeaters return to Norfolk as climate rapidly warms.
Conservation organisation writes celebratory tweets.
People encouraged to drive to see & photograph birds.
People trespass for better photos.
Nothing about this is particularly edifying.

A lot of hard work on yet another unseasonably warm day paid off big-time with a lovely Red-flanked Bluetail this afternoon. Great views of it devouring a butterfly too.
Plenty of crests and a good few thrushes, SEO, Brambling, Redpolls & Siskins etc😁

You can’t use that as an excuse to steal people’s homes and land 1948-2024.
That’s just insanely dumb
And then you starve them, control their movements, their food, their water, their power, detain thousands, murder them, torture them and claim you’re the victims.
@lmharpin
Reports I’m hearing from people on the ground are that Corbyn has a huge amount of support and the private healthcare CEO guy is really struggling.
As the planet continues to burn and flood, and people lose their lives, homes and futures, we continue to laud this utterly absurd type of activity.
Time to change.

Strict schools work because they only have to deal with the easy pupils. The rest are kicked out or never even get in for various, usually unethical reasons. Teaching in them is the easiest job in the world. Those who celebrate it are an embarrassment to teaching.
If everyone outraged at one tree being cut down decided not to fly again / eat meat, & so greatly reduce the damage they are doing to the planet and the futures of all 16-year-olds, I’d be hugely impressed and we’d have taken a great leap forwards.
Sadly, they just want blood.
The biggest problem we face by far is the climate emergency. If you want to do something to help:
Reduce - or better still - stop flying
Go Vegetarian or Vegan
Drive as little as possible
Consume less
Speak about these things
And be politically active & protest.
Slightly bittersweet moments this morning - lots of happy faces and a great bird for the patch but both bird and crowd also a reminder of the profoundly serious environmental issues we face.
Thanks to people for parking sensibly at the reserve.👍
@hausfath
The UK emissions do not include aviation and shipping and we have outsourced a lot of them.
@kevinclimate
has covered this many times. Our genuine decrease has been around 0.5% per year.
One of the most positive things about

is that it looks to the future. What you did yesterday, last week, last year, 10 or 20 years ago is history.
Everyone can start LCB and take steps to live more sustainably. We can only change the future ✊👍🚲
With so many extreme climate events happening, many people will (and should) be wandering around the

tomorrow feeling very uneasy. Very disappointed in the lack of leadership on offer. Things have to change.

If you’re at the very high-carbon globalbirdfair today, watch out for the flooded areas and be careful not to trip over the cognitive dissonance too - it’s everywhere but can be hard to spot. And don’t look up!
Bramblings, redpolls and a single Redwing this morning. Very little else. Shorts and T-shirt weather on Oct 8th. No skuas or shearwaters, passage wildfowl & waders aren’t happening. Grim times.
#lowcarbonbirding
Recent sightings from the rain-soaked hinterland have included superb close-up views of subadult (3cy) male Hen Harrier, Smew, several Cattle Egrets, Barn Owl, Snipe, Jack Snipe, Mistle Thrush, Fieldfare, Whoopers and Bewick’s etc.

The everyday treatment of people in Gaza and the total lack of compassion for those people shown by Israel and it’s supporters, is ignored by a great many more.
@CharlieJGardner
Research shows that making those changes in your personal life has a positive effect on those seeing you make them, increasing the likelihood of them making changes in turn. Certainly not minimally effective, disempowering or demotivating. Quite the opposite.
@MarkAvery
@GlobalBirdfair
Sadly, the event is still normalising very high-carbon travel. Your tweet shows you know this Mark. And you know it has to change. We all do. It should have changed years ago. Why are we waiting? Are things not bad enough?

A superb idea. A conversation between Jim and Kevin would be accessible and very informative. It would help get hugely important science a much wider audience. A definite win. 👍
10,000 penguins dead in Antarctica through effects of climate change. Our conservation orgs & birding media were only a few weeks ago promoting and supporting a global Birdfair selling high-carbon trips to Antarctica.
Quite a week: a superbly showy Blyth’s Reed Warbler in the village, at least 3 new shrikes in the square in last 3 days, a couple of Marsh (1 inland & 1 in south TG42) & a Monties (id from photo).
Very few hirundines, very few waders & terns. BRW pix by AJK

It is completely caused by humans. It can be measured, the mechanism is very well understood, and it can be attributed to human origins via isotopic content of the CO2.
Another beautiful day on the coast. Stunning skies and scenery as ever. Whoopers, Waxwing, a flock of redpolls, Siskin, Purple Sand and Black Red in the square, plus a Pallid Swift in Winterton, if you were desperate enough…
#lowcarbonbirding
There’s a lot of this energy that Julia refers to in the birding community. Taking action to mitigate and combat climate change is not pointless and younger people deserve the chance of a liveable future.
Glad tidings, rejoice! for we have possibly reached peak "self-pitying white old dude who understands very little about anything but is still willing to encourage doomerism and sacrifice of future generations"

The only genuine playing to an audience is the Telegraph piece, so that’s a shabby accusation. I’ve never seen Mr Anderson do it. His output is clear & consistent & has been for years, while the situation we face has markedly worsened.
Large numbers of birds feeding offshore. Auks numerous, Med Gulls everywhere, lots of terns and Gannets & a bit of scarce. Best were the Little Gulls - at one point around 300 in a loose mass, darting here and there, and resting on the sea. Wonderful.
Jeremy Bowen recounts how he was nearly killed by Israeli soldiers firing across the border into Lebanon. A fellow journalist with him was shot and killed, with Mr Bowen having to inform his wife.
Bowen is asked about Israel killing a journalist in Lebanon today & he recounts how, in 2000, he & his team were targeted by Israel in the same area & they killed a journalist then too
A reminder that targeting & killing journalists is something Israel has been doing for decades
Another superb day on the coast. Hardly a soul around. Recent sightings in the square include Black and Common Redstarts, Ring Ouzels, Woodlark, Hooded Crow, Red Kites, Spoonbills, Groppers, Willow Warblers and Whitethroats.
