Mexico City is decades ahead of the US on housing production policy. For example, in 2017, across a city of about 9 million people, they simply abolished parking minimums. That's about the same population as the roughly 90 jurisdictions in LA County.

Listening to a CEQA attorney in a wealthy Bay Area suburb explain that because of laws I have worked on the planning commission can no longer use CEQA as a fake reason to deny a housing project 🥲

The City of Oakland permitted 5 homes (not projects, homes) in January. SF permitted 6 homes in January. The scale of this housing crisis is going to get unimaginably worse.

The median price of a home in California in 2009 was $293,000 and today it's $831,000. LA got particularly screwed. In 2009, the median price of a home in LA was $340,000, and today it's $1 million.

It’s way too expensive to not have a car in this country, and it’s way too expensive to have a car in this country. A failure of government policy.

The Builders' Remedy, sponsored by the Bay Area Council, is perhaps the most successful housing law ever in California. Just one of the law firms I work with has dozens of projects and tens of thousands of homes in review. It's a staggering wave of housing about to crash on rents

As some of you know, this is my last week as CA YIMBY’s legislative director. It's been an honor to represent this organization and work with the broader movement over these past ~5 years. Together we’ve built a movement, completely transforming California housing politics. 1/x

This would absolutely change the lives of so many people I know. They’d pursue their dreams, start families, and take productive risks if released from the yoke of this debt. This would be amazing, completely life changing.

Schumer saying Biden can cancel first $50,000 in student debt via executive order. And will do so in first 100 days. This will change so many lives.

A fracture explodes: this week, CA’s top NIMBY groups joined a major wing of the environmental movement to oppose SB 423, which allows faster/cheaper homebuilding. That’s at odds with experts who say infill housing reduces emissions and segregation. Left-NIMBY alliance deepening!

The Squamish People are developing a massive amount of housing on land returned to them by the Canadian government - local government zoning restrictions don’t apply to the tribe.

Cities interested in affordable housing policy could buy development rights to a home in a single family zone, upzone it, and then sell the development rights, keeping profit, if any. They could use that money for affordable housing, infrastructure, whatever!

A reminder that Senator Wiener wins elections by consistently larger margins because voters resoundingly support the work he does on housing and he’s one of the most popular politicians in California. *Not* voting like Senator Wiener on housing is now the political liability.

My landlord has now taken down my "no exclusionary zoning please" sign SEVEN times and is asking people in my house who keeps putting it up. My housemates tell him they don't know. Solidarity, folks 😤👍

Interesting fact I learned today! AARP was started because a school principal found a former teacher living in a chicken coop. That's why they've always been there for housing, from ADUs to SB 50.
