Do any of these knuckleheads realize that Roe V. Wade was enacted because so many women were dying from illegal abortions that it was a public health crisis?
Feel like we are not giving Lakeith Stanfield enough credit for how easily he is both unfailingly decent in KNIVES OUT, and unpredictably chaotic in UNCUT GEMS. Dude is the stealthy glue of both those movies, two of the best of 2019.
Big fan of the ALL OF US STRANGERS YouTube press tour, in which Paul Mescal gently ribs Andrew Scott for not understanding how to play any of the games, and Andrew Scott reveals himself to be a delightful himbo, and also horrified at all the straight guy stuff Paul says
MAVERICK is going BACK into theaters while that successful movie from last week is leaving theaters and won't be available for a month. Make it make sense!
Lady Gaga's performance in HOUSE OF GUCCI is this alchemy of sheer charisma and presence, power of personality, and commitment to the bit. The way she stares daggers at everyone on screen is terrifying. The more I think about it, the more Patrizia is a true horror villain🖤
Unexpected highlight of tonight’s MASTER AND COMMANDER screening at the Academy Museum: sitting across the aisle from Margot Robbie. She must be a Weir Head
What strikes me watching this is how many different people’s hard work and creative labor is just being chucked in the bin. The devaluing of artists and artisans (and writers and journalists and actors etc etc) in this era is so depressing.
No film is served by hyperbole, but there was a point when I was watching

when I thought, “this is the culmination of all cinematic history.”

, this weekend I was loading up my car, talking about my “tray-zures.” My uncle overhears, comes up to me and says, “are you a murderino?” Me, shocked: “YES.” Uncle: “keep listening to the hometowns.” [walks away].
No surprise that DECISION TO LEAVE is an unequivocal masterpiece. Director Park doing Hitchcockian noir the way only he can: darkly amusing, romantic, obsessive, beautiful. Maybe my favorite of his???
In PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE, men speak a total of 4 lines, AND there’s a moment where you can whisper to your date, “that’s the portrait of the lady on fire.”
What's your favorite unconventional holiday movie (do NOT say DIE HARD). Something that evokes the holiday spirit, is randomly set during the holidays, or happens to be an easy family hit when you're all together?
THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS felt like Lana having a fast, loose, fun time remixing the existing material, and even though it's about the love story of Neo/Trinity, it's an unabashedly queer blockbuster.
I've never rarely an audience so captivated as the crowd with whom I saw CHALLENGERS: people were gasping and applauding at small gestures and glances in the climax. This movie is FUN and SEXY and FLIRTY and HOT and WILD and it's IMPORTANT that we have movies like that for adults
Couple things:
1. It is FUCKING INSANE how good BOOKSMART is. It is STUPID how good this movie is. I’m agog.
2. It is second coming of CLUELESS.
3. Beanie Feldstein should be nominated for, and win, an Oscar for this performance.
I feel high right now.
I feel like a big bozo for using the phrase "Amanda Knox saga" as a shorthand in my review of STILLWATER. Apologies to Amanda, who eloquently lays out why everyone in the media needs to do better with our choices, especially when it comes to real lives.
Does my name belong to me? My face? What about my life? My story? Why does my name refer to events I had no hand in? I return to these questions because others continue to profit off my name, face, & story without my consent. Most recently, the film

! — but alas, no Ram Charan. That means their big U.S. reunion will happen at Monday’s highly anticipated, sold-out-in-98-seconds IMAX Chinese screening after all
I was so ready to be skeptical of BODIES BODIES BODIES, but I loved it. It utilizes traditional horror tropes so well, & it's incredibly sharp, absurd and deeply nihilist. Halina Reijn directs the fuck out of it too, the lighting alone is incredible. Got lots to say about it!
Wow, NAVALNY is an incredible doc. I did not know the details of this story and it's straight-up spy thriller, stranger-than-fiction material, but it's all too real and all too terrifying. It's absolutely crucial and urgent to watch when it's on HBO Max/CNN.

MAY DECEMBER is just so spectacular and strange and funny and sad--it is completely its own thing and it feels at once like Todd Haynes returning to his melodrama genre play roots but also doing something completely new and original. A singular film.
The best way to watch Love is Blind is to have Twitter open the whole time searching things like "Nancy brothers" and "Bartise abortion" so you can enjoy the power users cooking these people up
The underlying ethos of WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR— that every person has value, and every person deserves love—feels both radical and completely vital today, this week, this year, this life. I want to shout it from the rooftops. You are valued. You are loved.
I've been thinking about Lynn Shelton & Marc Maron, and how easy it was to fall in love a little bit with Marc when Lynn was directing him (GLOW, SWORD OF TRUST, his specials). The mutual love, respect, & trust is so evident on screen in their collaboration.
I have finally FINALLY experienced RRR (truly one of the best cinematic experiences of my life... this is why Thomas Edison did the damn thing), and now I can't stop watching young Jr NTR videos on YouTube
HOUSE OF GUCCI is somehow even better on rewatch (and the digital screener looked better than the screening room??!!) There some godlike scene transitions in this thing, and whatever wavelength Jared Leto and Lady Gaga are on is wherever I want to be.
DICK JOHNSON IS DEAD, one of the best films of the year, comes to Netflix tomorrow, 10/2. Kirsten Johnson is one of the GREATS, a genius filmmaker who generously offers the gift of humanity and vulnerability with her work. I promise you need this movie in your life.
In the interview room, you have to hold up numbers to ask a question.
@JordanPeele
walked to the mic, looked at the numbers and said, "Am I about to be auctioned off right now? This is… creepy"
I have a great Social Distancing

Investigates:
1. ZODIAC (Netflix): cop / serial killer
2. SPOTLIGHT (Hulu/Showtime/etc): journalist / Catholic Church.
3. DARK WATERS (Amazon) lawyer / DuPont
Happy Ruffalo Investigates Day!

's DC office (202-224-3841) rang busy for me, but a nice young man in the LA office (310-914-7300) picked up and I told him I was horrified by her actions today and she should have stopped this whole repulsive sham hearing!
Re: Jennifer Lawrence's (hilarious, brave) nude scene in NO HARD FEELINGS... there's a specific context to her wanting to do nudity on her own terms--she was the victim of a cyber sex crime and had her private images disseminated without her consent
Natalie Portman looks so embarrassed to be holding that hammer. She’s gritting her teeth and thinking about all the bizarre high-camp art films it’ll pay for.
