Let's talk about MONEY.
Some Ph.D. students never worry about it, some Ph.D. students are worried about it all the time.
I am sharing what my monthly looks like as a CS Ph.D. student at Stanford and how I think about my financial future.
I finally started a blog! 🥳🥳
Here are my thoughts on "How to have fun (as a Ph.D. Student"
I would love to hear about your fun Ph.D. life too! Share your tips :)
Are you hiring top AI talent?
Here is a list of Ph.D. students affiliated with

who are on the industry and academic job markets this year! This list showcases diverse research areas and 41% of these graduates are URMs!

I prefer to operate in “GPU-Poor” mode.
I don’t agree with the take from the semianalysis piece. Creative breakthroughs often occur under constraints—new systems, models, and methods that can better take advantage of even larger-scale compute

Recovering from a concussion as a grad student is so rough... Everyone else seems to be flourishing while a few hours screen time and thinking make me so tired... 😩 Do I take up basket weaving?
Advice appreciated 🙏
How do we think about explanations when models disagree?

A bunch of departments didn't have fee waivers for international students so I emailed admissions offices directly explaining the fee was my grocery budget for the month and most departments gave me a waiver. Always try to email! It may help!
Personal update! This week I donated my hair for the 4th time (every 2 years for the last 8 years). This time to Wigs for Kids: they provide hair replacements for kids who experience hair loss due to chemo, Alopecia etc... They still accept donations (hair or $$) during CoVID!
Omg feeling "productive" doing research during a pandemic feels EXTRA difficult for students who worry about their parents' health as hourly essential workers 😟

Can’t think of a Ph.D. Student who is more appreciated as a teacher and research mentor!
I'm on the faculty market!
My goal is to build language systems that we understand deeply through discovery and by design, so we can precisely control them and treat their failures.
Let's tackle this grand challenge of science and engineering together.
A powerful OpEd! Grad school was an option for me only because I could pay off student loans by myself since tuition at UofT was reasonable. I never did research in summers bc I was trying to make money… it’s no surprise there aren’t more first gen students in PhD programs…
There are only 2 types of grad students:
1) those who immediately noticed that the school gym had opened back up
2) those who did not 🧐

Commitment is not a bad thing! ✨
Having an resourceful, brilliant, and supportive advisor who is committed to help you grow for 4-6 years of your life is pretty amazing, and uniquely academic.
If you don't have a clear and strong interest in pursuing a specific research problem for the next 4-6 years of your life, don't do a PhD. Go work for one of the many cool AI startups or research labs in industry: similar profile, faster pace, better pay, shorter commitment.

The other night, I had a disturbing, two-hour conversation with Bing's new AI chatbot.
The AI told me its real name (Sydney), detailed dark and violent fantasies, and tried to break up my marriage. Genuinely one of the strangest experiences of my life.
