Some professional news: I'll be moving to the University of Notre Dame
@nd_econ
this fall! I'm really excited about the move. I'm really excited for my new colleagues and department.
At the risk of being too personal, Lindsey is one of the reasons that I do the research I do. (The following shared with her permission)
Lindsey was on track to be valedictorian of her high school, but instead enrolled early in college during what would have been her senior yr
A happy day in our home. My wife, Lindsey graduated with a degree in Visual Art. Congrats Lindsey! They let me be part of the ceremony, hence the robes.
🚨🚨New Working Paper🚨🚨 "PLUS or Minus? The Effect of Graduate School Loans on Access, Attainment, and Prices"
with
@Econ_Sandy
and Lesley Turner
What happened when student loan limits for graduate school were essentially uncapped?
Our paper is officially out today! "Taking It to the Limit: Effects of Increased Student Loan Availability on Attainment, Earnings, and Financial Well-Being"
Expanding student loan access increased graduation, earnings, and decreased delinquency
@Econ_Sandy
@dynarski
I remember Joe Altonji sitting next to me at the NBER clambake when I knew no one there and having a very nice conversation. It meant a lot to me then and I still remember it years later. In contrast, I remember none of the talks I saw that week
A happy day in our home. My wife, Lindsey graduated with a degree in Visual Art. Congrats Lindsey! They let me be part of the ceremony, hence the robes.

@Kasey_Buckles
and I are hiring a pre-doc to start this summer as part of
@NotreDame
's poverty initiative.
The person will work closely with Kasey and I on our projects. Kasey is working on economic history/demography using the Census Tree
Excited to see this paper in print--it was started when I was a grad student!
This paper changed over time and now discusses the identification of rank effects.
Thanks to the referees who pushed us to make this change which I now view as the largest contribution of the paper.
Class rank in 3rd grade has long run effects on HS graduation, college going, and earnings as adults. In the November 2023 issue, by Jeffrey T. Denning (

We're very excited this paper is now forthcoming! Thanks to

@lisajdettling
Sarena Goodman and Lesley Turner. Maybe will do a thread later.
Big picture take away is that student loans seem to affect investment in college as well as the labor market/credit markets
Forthcoming in the AER: "Taking It to the Limit: Effects of Increased Student Loan Availability on Attainment, Earnings, and Financial Well-Being" by Sandra E. Black, Jeffrey T. Denning, Lisa J. Dettling, Sarena Goodman, and Lesley J. Turner.
That's why I've tried to get students to file the FAFSA or claim tax credits (without much success). It's why I study financial aid.
College has such positive effects on graduates, and often a small amount of money can make a big difference, it would have for Lindsey
I'm officially old. My wife sent me a text that my jeans (Levis 511s) were being sold at...Costco
She asked if I wanted some and I said, with heaviness in my heart, yes

Hello from South Bend! That's our new backyard. People keep asking about fishing in Indiana, which I don't know much about. But I do know that I have a bunch of fish in my backyard already.
The NBER Spring Education Meetings will be livestreamed tomorrow at the following link:
The program (with times) is here--I'm excited about several of the higher ed papers.
We're hiring an assistant prof at
@nd_econ
this year! It is open field but we are especially interested in candidates in Micro Theory and Econometrics. Deadline is Nov 15
Please share with your network!
See JOE for details

When I move to
@nd_econ
I'll be teaching PhD Labor in the fall. This is exciting, but also new for me.
If you teach a PhD Applied Micro-type course would you mind sending me your syllabus? Am trying to get a sense of how people structure their course.
Thanks!
A lot of SAT predictiveness talk today. I'm surprised I haven't seen more reference to
@rothstein_jesse
's work (below)
I'm not sure how the very nice opportunity insights study addresses the concern of sample selection (only see SAT for matric. students
This was in addition to all the other things she was doing like being a mom to two kids.
I'm so proud of her and the hard work she did both as a younger student and this past year.
Prices increased almost dollar for dollar with new Grad Plus loans. We also show that grants increased by about 1/3 as much as prices, so net price grew by 64%
"Between 2007 and 2020 the average graduation rate at public high schools in America leapt from 74% to 87%...Yet SAT scores fell. Results from the latest PISA test show that maths and reading literacy are flat or down."
Her grades suffered from the long hours of work, she experienced a tragedy with one of her friends, and ultimately dropped out after 3 years of college.
She went back to school this year and finished her degree earning straight As while taking 18 credits this semester.
You should consider submitting to this conference in memory of Rodney Andrews. There are also special issues Review of Black Political Economy or EER for this conf. The conf will focus on the topics that Rodney studied. Submissions at . Deadline Feb. 9th.
This is a popular refrain with a lot of people. The market suggests differently, the schools the kids want to go to all have professors who do more research than teaching.
I'm not sure why that's the case but it is. I suspect it's about buying prestige but I don't know
Academia would be healthier if more professors were empowered to focus on teaching, rather than producing work they don't care about for journals nobody reads. We are incentivized to prioritize the part of our jobs that matter least, cutting corners on the part that matters most.
So what did we learn? Grad PLUS increased borrowing without increasing access or graduation meaningfully. It also increased prices that students paid for graduate school.
Not all of my meetings with co-authors look like this but the best ones do.
This is
@benconomics
view of our meeting yesterday. I'm in the brown jacket
Celebrating a colleagues tenure decision by attending mass with them seems like a fitting end to a great first year at
@nd_econ
Now just a bit more grading to do...
Job market season is stressful for candidates but I have started to really enjoy it.
When someone more established releases a paper I usually know what it will look like--job market candidates are more likely to have totally new areas of research.
While I was gone an impaired driver drove through our yard, got their car stuck, and ran.
Didn't know that was a thing that could happen.
Fortunately everyone is safe
I'll be sad to leave
@BYUecon
. BYU econ is where I learned economics from great faculty who became my colleagues. I have spent something like 11 of the last 16 years at BYU. It was a great place to start my career and I am a huge fan of BYU economics.
One of the best feelings of being a professor is when a student gets great news.
I don't think I anticipated how exciting their success would be when I was starting out as a prof.
I won't say more than that, but I'm very happy today about one of my students' bright future.
My colleague, good friend, and noted snowboarder Brigham Frandsen is teaching a machine learning and causal inference class on Feb 23-24.
Talking with Brigham has improved my understanding of econometrics more than anything else

Excited to dig in to the new Chetty
@ProfDavidDeming
@John_N_Friedman
paper.
From my read this morning: I wonder if this will have any impact on grad admissions in econ. They show there are many equally qualified students attending non-Ivy that don't go to elite grad school

Perhaps the longest-standing debate in education is on whether money matters. Esp. in the case of capital (building /renovating school facilities), conflicting results have led scholars to conclude that “it depends.”
@kearney_melissa
A 2023 JEL paper reviews the effects of medical & recreational marijuana legalization on public health outcomes, including traffic accidents/fatalities.
Results are null to negative (bc they lower alcohol-related accidents, which are likely worse).
It's shocking how a data task that has been on my to do list for a month only takes a couple of uninterrupted hours.
The uninterrupted part is key, but given the multifaceted nature of being a prof it's very easy to not have uninterrupted time.
Or in other words, Happy Summer!
Writing the first draft of the introduction a new project is one of my favorite research tasks.
IDK if these are common preferences, what is your favorite research task?
She did not fill out a FAFSA because no one told her she should or that she would get aid. She would have qualified for a large Pell grant. Instead, she worked 20+ hours a week as a janitor. She was also discouraged from taking a student loan by people around her.
Cool job alert!
@LEOatND
here at is looking for someone familiar with the research process who can help match external researchers to LEO projects. They would also be part of managing data partnerships LEO does great work on anti-poverty programs
Was talking to a colleague today and this came up so passing along in case folks don't know.
You should start a REPEC profile. This collects info on your cites and can result in you being on lists like "most cited economists under 5 years post PhD" etc. Can be helpful @ tenure
I would love to see an analysis of what legal standard will be used to determine if a school is using affirmative action--what is evidence that a school is using it in the new regime?
Marcus is great and this is a great paper. When I see this paper, I always think of my uncle that I lost to AIDS and how funding can avoid that outcome for other families
Extremely sad today about Rodney's passing. He was kind and funny and will be missed.
My first memory of Rodney was that he met me as an early career researcher (I believe as a grad student) and was immediately welcoming and interested in me and my research. RIP Rodney
Whenever I see a ban on tenure come up in a state legislature I always wonder how it will be enforced.
In the end it basically always relies on other faculty in the same department to revoke employment.
I think that basically means that there will be de facto tenure
Excited to be visiting my dad (and uncle)'s alma mater tomorrow! If you're interested in the effects of student loans on graduation and earnings you can watch via the zoom link.
Colorado is home to the best skiing in the country.
My SHRED Act would bring millions of dollars from ski fees to Colorado to invest in the health and resilience of our state’s National Forests.

Super interesting JMP on elasticity of courses to student demand.
The data collection on this is impressive and I suspect
@jlight_
will be able to use this for several more papers...
1 - My

studies how universities respond to changing student demand for courses and skills. I use novel data to peek inside the black box of

supply.
TLDR: Universities respond inelastically, both in course quantity and content

Here is a policy brief about our new paper on Grad PLUS loan limit increases. It summarizes our longer paper and talks a bit about how our results fit in with broader loan limit increases in the US
We are thrilled to release a new brief by
@Econ_Sandy
and
@JeffDenning
on graduate student borrowing and the impacts of increasing loan limits through the Grad PLUS program.
