I wish reporters would stop saying “gop tried to stop wage increases”…
Virginia passed new minimum wage legislation. It’s the law.
The proper phrasing is, “GOP tries to lower wages”
Dear General Assembly,
The pandemic demonstrated we have the technology to hold virtual meetings.
VA citizens should not have to waste time & $$ getting to Richmond to speak on issues in their community.
Let’s cultivate engaged citizenry by expanding virtual options.
Best,
VA
Soooo Arlington, Richmond, Fairfax, & Henrico school systems all respond to the executive order making masks voluntary by saying they will remain mandatory…
Who was this reckless eo for?
One thing that is undeniable from
#VAGOV
…
DPVA fully gave up on rural VA
I’ve lost track of how many times I asked candidates to visit ESVA only to get no response.
Rural Dems hit me up if you want to organize ourselves since the party thinks we aren’t worth the time of day
Me: I’m going to get outside it’s beautiful
General Assembly: Not so fast pal. The House is stripping duly appointed citizens from natural resource boards because they can’t put a coal lobbyist in charge of our environment.
This is why we can’t have nice things.
Big shoutout to all the journalists covering today who made it clear
#CriticalRaceTheory
is not taught in Virginia schools.
Facts of the matter continue to be eroded and I’m so grateful to the reporters who refuse to let the truth be drowned out by sloganeering.
Virginians: let’s stop the racist war on drugs!
General Assembly: Here you go. Our roadmap for some folks to get rich off legal marijuana sales.
Virginians: This isn’t what we asked for. We wanted you to stop arresting black & brown people ASAP
GA: But who would make money?
BREAKING:
@MarkHerringVA
has issued an opinion stating the “Governor may not repeal or eliminate, through an executive order or other action, the enacted statutes and regulations pertaining to the Commonwealth’s participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative…”
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Cancelling student debt wouldn’t mean “you got ripped off” ...
It just means our Country continues to improve and better provide opportunities for all.
Y’all need to chill out on the selfishness. The USA is a work in progress ...don’t begrudge the future for getting brighter.
People: what does protesting even accomplish?
One week later in Richmond:
- citizen review board ✔️
- establish crisis alert ✔️
- ordinance to remove Confederate monuments✔️
- implement racial equity study ✔️
- Governor to remove Lee statue from Capital ✔️
One. Week.
Virginia’s newly named Director of Diversity, Opportunity, & Inclusion will also serve as “an ambassador for unborn children”…
I’m sure VIrginia women will be thrilled to learn the Commonwealth intends to have diplomatic relations with their womb.
I’m just so confused… we are in the middle of session with a Democrat controlled Senate & House… and you do this?
His advisors clearly don’t think he should pass any legislation
Democrats today do not believe in — nor do they want — a strong America, an America with no rivals; they are content to concede, to compromise away, to abandon the very foundations that made America exceptional.
A town in my community is selling their confederate statue & land to sons of the confederacy for $1 so that it will stay up forever
We’d like to make a counter-offer & use the space to honor the immeasurably contributions of black Virginians
So would you help us buy a statue?
I’m honored to receive the endorsement of Virginia State Senator
@BarbaraFavola
.
A strong leader for Northern Virginia families, she is working to protect Virginians’ fundamental rights, protect the right to choose, and protect our environment for future generations.
Thank you!
School is cancelled today on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Not because
#HurricaneIan
is directly hitting us but rather because even moderate rain & storm surge coupled with
#sealevelrise
makes many of our roads impassable.
VA needs

resources. We need to stay in

Each election cycle in Virginia we get to watch a whole new crop of politicos realize that twitter presence is in no way shape or form representative of the actual voters.
Gonna be a lot of people surprised later that memes didn’t get their candidate over the line.
Stop invoking the Founding Fathers when you try & run up in a Trader Joe’s without a mask on.
The founding fathers would be ashamed of that irresponsible behavior... & they’d probably tell you to go home & plant a damn garden.
Don’t drag those dead men into your nonsense.
Youngkin naming Trump EPA head, Andrew Wheeler, VA’s next Secretary of Natural & Historic Resources.
Wheeler rolled back Clean Water Act protections, clean power plan, & vehicle emission standards. Also claimed “… most of the threats from climate change are 50 to 75 years out
Dems saying “If we just were just a little more republican” are once again taking away the wrong message.
You need to stop letting Republicans drive your narrative. Polls always show broad support for progressive issues. You need to learn how to win not adopt Republican lite.

We joke that talking about the weather is somehow is boring but I just finished planting 100s of pears, chestnuts, & blueberries on the promise of rain.
Weather is life in rural communities… which is why the inconsistent patterns created by the

is so worrisome.
Governor vetoed a bill to label invasive plants.
Invasive species cost Virginia parks, farmers, small business owners, & homeowners hundreds of millions of dollars… but we can’t tell people they might be buying one.
It’s time to ban their sale Virginia.
Last month, the Governor said that the most effective approach to addressing this issue of invasive plants is education. Today, I learned that he will be vetoing SB306. This bill educates consumers by requiring signage identifying invasive plants where they are sold.
I'm proud to announce Virginia is no longer participating in West Virginia v EPA, a lawsuit that could devastate the coal industry and the thousands of jobs it supports in Southwest Virginia.
Virginia is no longer anti-coal.
Dear Virginia General Assembly,
I’m bringing my daughter to work tomorrow so please be nice to our bills so we don’t ruin democracy for her:)
XOXO-
Jay
A Delegate just walked into the hotel bar and said, “I need to get something or I’ll kill myself after today.”
They then purchased a bag of Cheetos and walked like Charlie Brown to their room.
We are at that point of General Assembly folks... sad Cheeto time.
Since Virginia budget negotiations are ongoing it feels like a great time to remind everyone that if we do not rejoin RGGI we will be out more than half a billion dollars for climate adaptation & energy efficiency work over the next two years.
Oh yea & our emissions are way up.
"A group connected to Dominion Energy has spent at least $300,000 on TV and Facebook ads in the last two months warning consumers against deregulating the state’s utility market." from
@BPaves
The Virginia air board just voted to repeal the RGGI regulations… a move that could have tremendous environmental, economic, and public health consequences.
VA’s Land Conservation Board will add State & Federally recognized Indian Tribes to our grant manual today & for the 1st time they can access our flagship grant program protecting land for future generations
Long overdue but I’m thrilled to be able to vote for this program today
Dear Virginia General Assembly,
What time are you announcing what committees members will be on and important follow up….
Can we do it Harry Potter style with a sorting hat that yells out their committee assignments?
The Youngkin admin wants to tear down the Pocahontas Building, that hulking den of lobbyists, lawmakers and reporters looking for somewhere quiet to record.
I’ll never stop telling people from Maryland that Chesapeake Bay blue crabs are all born and raised in Virginia... even when it’s not remotely related to the topic at hand.
General Assembly idea: members get to select entrance songs that play while they walk up to the podium to hype the committee before they present their bills.
Most important bill of session advanced!
Shore’s own Chincoteague pony to become VA’s pony, 1st amongst its tiny brethren, the Commonwealth’s feral horse, king of the ponies.
In your face Shetlands. VA has but one top pony & it may or may not have come from a Spanish galleon.
Historic clean water & climate change investments in the budget!
- Puts VA back RGGI
- 400m for wastewater
- Full funding for Agricultural clean water practices
- Funds the Office of Resilience to help VA adapt to climate impacts
- 20m for the innovative pay for outcomes pilot
I’ll tell you what… this has been one of those weeks that makes selling out or becoming extremely radical very attractive.
Being reasonable and balanced has a rapidly diminishing role in the public sphere.
A mature forest ecosystem takes between 150- 500 years to develop…
Yet you can plant acres of a single tree species, with government funding, to cut down in 30 years, & it’s legally a “forest”
So many of the issues we face exist at the disconnect between science & policy.
Lots of deserved praise for
@VASenateDems
being a wall against rollbacks…
However, yesterday Senate Dems helped move a bill to gut environmental boards… effectively shutting
#EnvironmentalJustice
voices out of decisions impacting their communities.
Gotta own the good & bad.
Colleague: isn’t waiting outside the Delegate’s office “stalking”?
Me: No, You’re just being helpful… they just haven’t yet realized they want to talk to you
Colleague: ok
Me: If that doesn’t work wait in the stairwell!
…
I give you 99% of lobbying & advocacy
Follow up tweet since some Dems contacted me to say, “highlighting donations from Mountain Valley Pipeline isn’t helpful”
Is it more unhelpful than climate change? Is it more unhelpful than a company with countless water quality violations in Virginia?
Y’all need to be better
Congratulations to JUDGE Lynwood Lewis!
Thanks for your decades of service to the General Assembly and best wishes in your new role serving our community here on the Shore.
The most honest & painful quote in this article:
“To be real, it sounds like you are saying stop pushing for what Black folks want”
Said it before and I’ll say it forever. We don’t compromise on human rights. Their is no “centrist route” on human dignity
Please stop saying, “get back to normal”. There was nothing “normal” about how we were living.
We’ve been on an unsustainable, collision course with the natural world for generations.
We’ve built an economy that only functions if we maximize consumption.
We need a new “normal”
The bill to eliminate minimum wage exemptions for farm workers is up next week in the Senate
You’ll hear members say race isn’t an issue before voting against it...
But let’s be honest if farm workers were white voters instead of brown immigrants this wouldn’t even be a debate
@SenLouiseLucas
was our top taster today on 6 different regions oysters and clams!!
And Delegate Pugh Kent holding it down as shucker extraordinaire!!!
Is so insane that helping the unhoused, the environment, abandoned animals, the poor, at risk children, & others are all things we’ve largely shifted to the non-profit sector.
Society is like, “yea those things are important but only if some rich people feel like paying for it”
Kid: Dad I’ve been thinking
Me: oh?
Kid: I probably need my own house when I grow up.
Me: I figured you’d want that one day.
Kid: well I’ll want my own space sometimes so can I build a house somewhere on the farm close to you?
Me: of course (Goes to cry)

General Assembly sidequest where you start on the lower level & climb the entire staircase to the 14th floor, collecting 10 unique candies along the way, before answering a riddle posed by

gives you 2 mins on your favorite little bill.
I hope everyone who enjoyed an oyster yesterday will join me in thanking the man, the myth, the legend

The pop up only happens because of him &
@chesapeakebay
(and I suspect many happy legislators) are so grateful to him for a truly wonderful event.
Big thanks to

for refusing to accept the premise that Virginians are dumb
“The reason the dairy industry has seen decline is not because people are confused about if soy milk is cow milk,” said Sen. Jennifer McClellan, D-Richmond.
Friday’s should be bring your dog to work day for the Virginia General Assembly.
I guarantee more bipartisanship & better outcomes for the Commonwealth.
Governor vetoed HB1100 which would have given ALL localities the ability to protect tree canopy during development.
NOVA has this authority so vetoing the bill denies Hampton, Portsmouth, Norfolk, Petersburg, RVA & the rest of VA the rights afforded to our wealthiest region.
Idea for VA.
Create an Office for Climate Change to coordinate across government.
Between emission reductions, sea level rise, health impacts, sequestration, & more… we have scores of agencies acting without a big picture plan which can (and has)lead to inefficiencies.
