I GOT THIS ACCOUNT BACK!!!! After having lost it for one year. Whew!
If you followed me at
@jackjmirkinson
, thank you, but follow me here now! Otherwise, carry on…
Defeated on same-sex marriage, the religious right went searching for an issue that would re-energize supporters and donors.
Now, the pace of the campaign against transgender rights has stunned political leaders across the spectrum.
Palestinian writer and politician Atef Abu Saif has been in Gaza with his family since October 7. He has kept a diary of the experience, and today,
@thenation
is publishing a month's worth of excerpts from that diary. I cannot urge you to read them enough
Unreal CNN panel. Nina Turner brings up suffering in Gaza, gets interrupted, and Anderson Cooper says ‘we don’t need to debate the issue’ and tries to pivot. How tf to you discuss the Michigan uncommitted vote without discussing THE REASON ITS HAPPENING??
buzzfeed news is not shutting down because of anything its workers did or didn’t do, it’s shutting down because it is run by rich people who see no value in something that doesn’t make them even richer
I wrote for
@thenation
about one of the most tiresome tropes of the last few months: the "Biden is definitely very angry with Netanyahu behind the scenes" story.
The deafening silence of the US media establishment as Israel carries out the most sustained attack on journalism in modern history should be a source of lasting shame. I wrote about it for
@thenation
I wrote for
@thenation
about the crazy-making, grotesque absurdity of watching Joe Biden make all these elaborate plans to ease the suffering in Gaza that is being caused by HIS OWN WEAPONS
if you'd told me a year ago "israel has to protect civilians in gaza" would be a democratic applause line i would not have believed you. that's what the movement for palestine has done
"We are a very queer, a very trans, a very Black, and a very anti-fascist city. Moms for Liberty fucked around, and they found out what it looks like when you cross us and threaten our neighbors." Philly's own
@GrimKim
everyone 😎
yes, unionize your workplace, but that’s not enough. too much of the media is owned by millionaires and billionaires who fail upward and leave a trail of other peoples’ broken careers in their wake. people have to support real independent media for this shit to change
Really pleased to have the great
@EmissaryOfNight
writing in
@thenation
about Matthew Miller and the other Biden flacks who have come to embody the cynical, soulless nature of the government's Gaza policies
nothing in this piece points to "a sinister cabal of doctors is turning kids into trans werewolves" but a hell of a lot points to "these people seem way overworked and under-resourced, maybe if trans healthcare was more accessible things would be better"
Weird how YET ANOTHER concern-trolling feature story can't find any evidence of kids being rushed into transition but ONCE AGAIN implies that they are everywhere and just about to emerge from the shadows.
The Harvard Law Review was supposed to run a piece by
@RabeaEghbariah
about the war on Gaza. But the HLR leadership took the unprecedented step of blocking the piece's publication. Today,
@thenation
is sharing the piece the HLR didn't want you to read.
Today,
@thenation
is publishing the fourth in our series from the Gaza diaries of writer Atef Abu Saif. As ever, to call them essential is an understatement. I have run out of ways to tell you how much you should read them, so just read them.
v weird that people do not seem to be able to hold two thoughts–such as, for instance, "the adl really sucks" and "this specific attack on the adl is clearly antisemitic in a way unconnected with the things that make the adl bad"—in their heads at the same time
setting aside the fascist rhetoric for a moment, it's...interesting that adams whines about how the migrants are going to make him cut public services as if he didn't already do that so that the cops could have even more money
NYC Mayor Eric Adams is a xenophobic bigot: “[Migrants] will destroy NYC. How many of you are organized to stop what they’re doing to us? It’s going to come to your neighborhoods. All of us are going to be impacted. The city we knew we’re about to lose.”
Our correspondent in his last report as Israel imposed total blackout. "Please guys if you can hear us send the message to the world we are isolated now in Gaza. Again guys if you can hear us ... we are isolated we don't have phone signals or tech connections.."
This is just a sample of some of the "Biden/Netanyahu ties are strained/things are more fraught/a breach is definitely widening" stories written between November and February. In that time, around 17,000 people in Gaza were killed.
I'm something of a NYC nationalist—I really think it's a miracle that all the peoples of the world can live together in one city basically in peace and harmony—and this UES halal cart vendor story is only reinforcing that.
I was so proud to have edited this piece. In it, Ahmed wrote to the world, "Help us tear down the wall, end our imprisonment, and fulfill our dreams of liberation." We owe it to him, and to the family he has lost, to heed his call.
The Nation is heartbroken by the news that an Israeli airstrike has seriously injured poet & journalist Ahmed Abu Artema and killed his young son. In his most recent piece, he begged for the world to help Gaza. We share his plea again now.
Up now on
@thenation
: the very brilliant
@OmarSShakir
takes us through why the ICJ's Israel ruling matters so much and what it will mean if the world doesn't ensure that Israel complies.
i know from my own experience and that of my colleagues at
@thenation
that it is not hard to find palestinian voices and sources right now. but you have to want to find them. clearly, the times doesn’t want to.
Proud to have been part of the team that computationally analyzed the New York Times' biased coverage of Israel and Palestine. This is part of a broader effort by Writers Against the War On Gaza
@wawog_now
, who released today a tour-de-force exposé of NYT:
Journalists in Gaza are doing some of the bravest, most emotionally taxing war reporting ever—and getting killed in record numbers. As
@Nadia8
writes in
@thenation
, it's time for the journalism world to treat them as the heroes they so clearly are
to be crystal crystal clear, these democrats deserve no credit at all for just clapping. but it is a sign that they're scared, and they are right to be scared.
I feel crazy having to point this out, but: if you say that you want Israel to stop killing so many civilians, and at the same time you're sending Israel weapons you know are being used to kill civilians, you don't actually want Israel to stop.
We have been writing an occasional about how Henry Kissinger keeps not being dead for over two years. Honored to finally bring that series to a close tonight
somehow even though none of us at discourse blog had any business experience we knew not to blow our entire budget on milk. and yet nobody has entrusted us with millions and millions of dollars. weird i know
If people think Vice mgmt’s incompetence is exaggerated: At one point they were seemingly spending 90% of the snack budget on milk. Every time our union committee met my NY coworkers would talk about how much milk there was. Around this time they just stopped paying for PACER
Thank you
@JesseSingal
, I definitely appreciate you deleting the tweet. But I respectfully ask that you characterize your statement properly and not blame me or
@translashmedia
for your own misunderstandings. Which I feel I once again need to clear up.
Earlier this month,
@thenation
published excerpts from the Gaza diary of Palestinian writer and politician Atef Abu Saif. I'm very grateful that we've now been given the chance to publish another week's worth of entries. Please, please read them.
President Biden and his top advisers are warning Israel with growing force that it will become increasingly difficult for it to pursue its military goals in Gaza as global outcry intensifies about the scale of humanitarian suffering there.
Our peer, and journalist
@MohammRafik
has been injured by an airstrike last week.
His account has been horrifying. Israel must be obstructed from receiving weapons and should not have this much power over the lives of millions. Literally choosing to feed them or not. Send water
Today on
@thenation
we have something you genuinely almost never see: a whistleblower's staggering inside look at one of our most secretive, powerful, and destructive companies—McKinsey. My eternal thanks to
@GarrisonLovely
for telling his story.
The Palestinian protest is delaying arrivals for many including a lot of the big stars. Numbering in the 100s, they have shut down the cross street of Highland and Fountain, a main thoroughfare, according to one spectator. The Academy is sending golf carts to retrieve them.
Today in
@thenation
:
@sophiehurwitz
crashed a Friends of the IDF Gala with anti-Zionist Israeli activists and came back with this exclusive, and very wild, report.
Up on
@thenation
today: an astonishing series of letters between
@SarahAziza1
and
@IntifadaBatata
from before and after October 7. They are brave and beautiful and wise and you will be bowled over by them.
Sigh, I didn’t want to do this, but my account got stolen from me and Twitter has done nothing to get it back! So I am parking myself here for now.
@TwitterSupport
gimme my account back! Everyone else follow me here until further notice.
Just learned that
@MohammRafik
, who has written regularly for
@thenation
from Gaza, was injured by an Israeli airstrike along with his family, including his 2-year-old son. Everyone is alive, thankfully. This is the second time Mohammed's been hurt by an airstrike. Beyond awful.
This is a devastating documentation of the NYT's utter and continued refusal to prioritize coverage of the war against trans people in the United States
We've also compiled a timeline of events since the publication of the letter, including the NYT's various responses, reporting on staff's past attempts to address bias, and the anti-trans legislation that has gone largely unreported by the paper.
Today on
@thenation
, we're publishing our third set of entries from Atef Abu Saif's Gaza diaries. This set is just as moving, harrowing, and indispensable as the last two. Please, please read it.
“What Was I Made For?” singer Billie Eilish, “Poor Things” star Ramy Youssef and more celebrities are wearing red pins at the

in support of Artists for Ceasefire.
i guess it's "wake up and find out in the new york times that the website you helped build from scratch only to have it liquidated overnight has been randomly resurrected over four years later" day
Eric Adams and the PBA have negotiated a new NYPD contract that will cost the city $5.5 billion.
Pay raises are across the board and retroactive to 2017.
For example, cops who are 5 years in will now earn $130,000, a $40,000 increase. That's not including overtime.
this is why all of the stories i wrote about that insist that biden is definitely really truly madder than ever at israel are so awful: because in reality, biden is letting israel act with total impunity no matter what
The Biden admin won’t punish Israel for a Rafah military operation that doesn't protect civilians.
Three U.S. officials told us no reprimand plans are in the works, meaning Israeli forces could harm civilians in the city with no American consequences.
this is a very obvious line of questioning that pelosi has no coherent answer to. shameful that you will so rarely see a top American journalist ask these things
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi defends continued U.S. military aid to Israel:
“Israel is very well equipped with weaponry. There’s nothing that we have sent since Oct. 7 that has contributed to this brutality. In the longer run, they are in a dangerous neighborhood…”
gotta say this blog about how we should have paid slightly more attention when john fetterman was openly saying "i have bad politics on Israel" during his campaign is holding up nicely
very pleased to have
@ushahamat
's lovely piece about a group of queer kids who banded together to stand up to Republican politicians trying to legislate them out of existence up on
@thenation
this morning!
The U.S. provides $3.8 billion a year to Israel. The Biden administration and Congress must make it clear. Israel has the right to defend itself and destroy Hamas terrorism, but it does not have the right to use U.S. dollars to kill thousands of innocent men, women, and children
We have something exciting on
@thenation
today: the first media interview
@RepRashida
's given in some time. She talked to
@NicholsUprising
about Gaza, Biden, dealing with the torrent of hate she gets, and more.
Beyond grateful to
@YoumnaElSayed17
, who has been reporting from the heart of the assault on Gaza for the last month, for taking the time to talk to
@thenation
about what her life is like right now.
sorry but if your rumination on the war posits that Israel’s war crimes in Gaza are some big break with its past conduct—rather than a particularly horrifying extension of the conduct it has engaged in for decades—you are telling us not to take you seriously
I've spent the past month talking about what's happening in Gaza with some of the world's leading experts on military strategy, counterterrorism, and the law/ethics of war.
What emerged was a story of a war gone terribly, horrifically wrong:
I cannot emphasize to you enough how much you should read this piece by
@maramcavallaro
about her family and the 1973 Chilean coup. An extraordinary story, told extraordinarily well.
NEW: Just 17% of Arab Americans say they will vote for Biden in 2024, according to a new
@AAIUSA
poll—a staggering drop from 59% in 2020.
“This is the most dramatic shift over the shortest period of time that I’ve ever seen,”

The killing of Banko Brown—a young, Black, unhoused, trans man—in San Francisco has drawn little attention from the folks that usually can't get enough of SF crime stories (wonder why that is) so I'm glad we have something about it on
@thenation
today.
This piece by
@hannahcrileyy
that's up on
@thenation
today is perfect for anyone who wants a really good rundown of what's been going on in the fight against Cop City in Atlanta and why it matters so much
"It’s not that all of Fetterman’s positions are wrong," writes
@GrimKim
. "It’s the way he’s gone about expressing his stance. Quite simply, he has decided to be a real dick about it."
On a day when very bad coverage of trans issues is dominating the discourse, I'm really grateful to have this beautiful, wrenching piece by Karen Krajcer about the experience of raising a trans kid in Texas up on
@thenation
.
now that these people have (many many many many months too late) acknowledged the level of suffering by journalists in Gaza, maybe their outlets can stop saying that reporting from Gaza is "rare" as if none of those journalists exist
⚡️ 30+ news outlets affirm support for
#Gaza
journalists
“These journalists – on whom the international news media and the international community rely for information about the situation inside Gaza – continue to report despite grave personal risk.”
