Why now? KU’s attempt to suspend tenure & its over-reliance on short-term contracts for teaching faculty, no voice in major decisions abt academic programs, stagnant wages not competitive w other flagships, decline in state funding 1/

There is no truth to the rumor that we put troublesome faculty in the larger classrooms to increase the odds of infection. But, now that you’ve suggested it, it could influence spring course assignments. How big of a class can we assign to the AAUP president?
All faculty - no matter where you work and no matter what field you’re in - need to understand that protecting, defending and strengthening the profession is PART OF YOUR JOB.
Higher ed is facing an existential threat.
Glad to see more coverage of the war on colleges and on college and university accreditation. This is in fact a war, and the higher ed sector must defend itself.

Academic freedom includes the right to free speech. When faculty speak as citizens, they should be free from institutional censorship or discipline. Shafik’s public naming of professors under investigation sets a dangerous precedent & echoes McCarthy era cowardice.

These weren’t decisions on tenure or qualifications. By the slimmest majority (4-6), the board's out-of-state political operatives changed the rules in the middle of the game. To them, it IS a game. To the affected faculty, it's a career.
Despicable. Five faculty members denied tenure
@NewCollegeofFL
because the out-of-state political operatives who have hijacked the board don't think the school needs a GIS professor or a chemistry professor. I guess this is how you build a "Hillsdale of the South."
Irene Mulvey: Tenure exists to protect academic freedom, & academic freedom is necessary at the university level to advance knowledge. By getting rid of tenure, they're getting rid of academic freedom.

🙏 Academic freedom allows the research to go wherever the search for truth takes it. Tenure w/ due process protections is what prevents inappropriate political or other interference into that search for truth. If that's gone, public higher ed in GA may all well close up shop.

Exactly. Without academic due process (prior to dismissal, an adjudicative hearing before an elected faculty body at which the burden of proof falls on the administration), academic freedom is not protected and “tenure” is meaningless.

Students should be able to study the subjects they are interested in, in classes taught by faculty experts in those subjects who decide the curriculum and methods of instruction. That’s how college works.
FL’s Education Commissioner has NO research, studies, or analysis to justify the elimination of sociology from general education at our state universities + colleges.
But he’s running with it anyway in order to serve his anti-woke master, Ron DeSantis.
Consequences be dammed.
