Last time the RNOH became a 'Trauma Centre' at the drop of metaphorical hat - this time, as a major incident is declared in London, we have become a COVID ICU and COVID recovery centre ... hats off to colleagues who are managing the change ... we can do this - and do it well...
The RNOH is going back to its roots, first trauma meeting since 1982 at 7.30am tomorrow... Hopefully not going to go back further in time to its days as a Sanitorium? I am sure our well trained trainees will keep us on the straight and narrow๐ค

We're thrilled to introduce

and holds the position of UCL Professor of Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at Great Ormond Street and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospitals.
They mirror yours Roshana.
There needs to be career progression for all: it needs to be upfront & agreed.
But -surgeons should be /must be (if they are interested) training surgeons and training well.
So ... training others - yes, but at the expense of surgical trainees, no
30%of registrar intake are now female, almost 20% consultant appts in 2022 were women -the tide is changing. And ps - we are good surgeons too!

@drlesleybarron
I am 100% sure that being dismissive is the root of their problem. And in the realm of guy surgeons literally no specialty has proven themselves to be as awful as the big bro team of orthopods. We need young women to flood this specialty.

So - I fainted dead away in my first op as a registrar - I took the Mayo tray and the custom made implant with meโฆ I didnโt think it was possible to be red faced on coming round from a faint!!
Have just had a message from a Med student who saw my tweet about fainting
She wants to be a surgeon but faints and has been told more than once to give up her dream
So here is the advice I gave her, incase anyone else needs to hear it too ๐งต

Great article .. update on 'UK' figures, 35% T&O CTs and 29% STs identify as Asian/British Asian, 30% and 18% are women, 30% of female consultants are 'early years' .. we are changing .. .
I truly think our orthopaedic patients deserve consideration too - joint replacement well recognised as being one of THE best operations for improving QoL. ... our patients have been at the back of the queue too long.

@WeAreARMA
No sign of any rise in mortality since the UK COVID-19 ๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝsecond waveโ yet we continue to have significantly reduced resources to carry out cancer surgery. Cancellation after cancellation. Can we just stop over-engineering this and get back to treating cancer patients please?
ST3 applications are open. Looking forward to great trainees applying to the best surgical specialty and ... Remember women outshine the men (a bit!) at T&O interview!

We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Dame Clare Marx CBE, DL, MBBS. A former BOA President and leading light in orthopaedic surgery, Dame Clare was a role model and inspiration to so many. She will be deeply missed, and our thoughts are with her friends and family.
So- how well are we doing in elective orthopaedics? 3m into the restart, we have gone up ... from bottom to next-to-bottom .... NOT good enough, must do better. This is not a lack of motivation .. this is a lack of resources ...
@BritOrthopaedic
If you like fixing things, if you like removing the dis- to reveal the ability, if you are interested in how things function, comfortably, if you are always asking how and why and want to learn ย - then T&O is the only specialty there is.ย

Appointing 28-ish female consultants next year would raise the consultant T&O percentage who are women by 1% - but we do have that number of trainees - it takes time to change..,,
Hard hitting meeting with the Presidents of the RCS of England and Edinburgh - trying to find ways to help our patients, surgeons and trainees.. no magic wand but undeniably a willingness to continue to work together..
