As I journey away from my conservative, Reformed world and study for myself, I find it shocking how much of the theology ends up with gaining and preserving power. 😰
My sweet 14 yo girl had a fundoplication a few years ago due to a hiatal hernia & lots of pain, suffering and seizures.
The symptoms are back & a 2nd surgery is terrifying.
She has a GI scope on Tue.
If you are one that prays, would you pray for an end to her suffering?
@_nomadic_soul
If God just creates us in order to get what God wants…(glory, praise honor)
Why would human relationships be different?
(That’s not my view of God anymore.)
1/ "Power offers an easy substitute for the hard task of love. It seems easier to be God than to love God, easier to control people than to love people ... Much Christian leadership is exercised by people who … have opted for power and control [over the work of love].
You know what loving your neighbor looks like?
It’s when your mower is broken and you need to work and do ER visit after hospital visit….
And you come home to a mowed lawn. 😭
Today is my daughter Livia’s surgery day 😥
If you are one that prays or whatever else, please think of her.
Her stomach keep riding up above her diaphragm. This is the second attempt.

Interviewer: “I’m not walking away from Jesus, but I’m done with the church” (context is Mark Driscoll harm)
John Piper: “IF YOU DO THAT, YOU’RE WALKING AWAY FROM JESUS!”
If there is an accusation of abuse and you tend to side with the person/group that is
kind, gentle, level-headed
AND AGAINST
angry, agitated, emotional
It’s more likely you are siding with the abuser.

“What’s the big deal if my favorite theologian owned slaves, their theology is top notch, I just use discernment.”
Same guy:
“I would never read/lean on a theologian that is ok with allowing women to teach/preach/lead — their theology is skewed from holding that view.”
@ZachWLambert
That’s because Evangelicalism, like Complementarianism, is based on a redefinition of words and phrases, such as “we are all equal.”
It’s gaslighting.
Piper/Grudem in RBMW: “we desire that every Christian man who reads this book will come away feeling in his heart that women are indeed fully equal to men in personhood..before God”
So women can’t be in charge or lead men, but they want men to “feel” like women are equal?
To Egalitarians:
An apology
I’m sorry for
-not giving you the benefit-of-the-doubt
-believing you were outside the faith
-believing you didn’t care for the Bible
-not reading your own writings myself
Will you forgive me?
My wife & I were in despair with trying to find a church outside of our conservative world.
She found one via Google this week and we visited. The female pastor said to us after:
“We strive decolonize the way we view leadership.”
“Literally, this is a man being elevated who is the model of everything everything that is destructive in, in morality in our culture.”
-John MacArthur referring to Donald Trump in March 2016
(Notice Al Mohler beside)
I keep getting these comments: “hate the sin, not the sinner.”
But if you pick the wrong sin to hate, you end up hating and hurting people doing nothing wrong.
Christian history is littered with “hating sins” that are acceptable now (dancing, working on Sundays, drinking beer,…
I’m not comfortable calling myself a “Christian” anymore.
I hold on to Jesus, but that word has been used to harm, kill, “other,” subjugate, control, manipulate, obfuscate, colonize, enslave.
🤬🤬🤬
I have left 1 and now am loving 2:
1. Hierarchy is ordained by God, God appoints men on earth to rule on God’s behalf, use hierarchy to glorify God
2. Hierarchy is worldly, God laid down power and gives freedom, God cares most about those at the bottom of world’s hierarchies
Despite what the Moral Majority guys expected, Ronald Reagan decided to side with the NAACP & allow segregated schools to have tax-exemption revoked.
What did RJ Rushdoony say when he got a meeting with Reagan lawyers?
You won’t believe it. 😳😳
Tweet 11 is the shocker.

Want to be shocked?
Read about the Greco-Roman gender hierarchy with me.
Notice how close it is to Piper/Grudem.
“Several philosophers argued that the virtues of men and women are different. The man’s virtue is to rule and the woman’s virtue is to obey.”
🧵/1
This is a point I’ve never considered.
-All females are forever disqualified from ministry
-A man’s behavior is almost never bad enough to be disqualified from ministry
It never fails to amaze me that communities are fine telling women to get over idea that there something inherent in their femaleness that forever disqualifies them but cannot find the will to tell a man his behavior has disqualified him w/finality. 2/3
Focus on the Family’s movie review site on the Barbie movie.
“Their portrayal here—is often demeaning and belittling. We see men depicted as vain, selfish, self-centered, abusive and generally narcissistic, with precious few examples to the contrary.”
Waaaah! So unfair!
So if the fruit of a woman preaching and teaching the gospel are people coming to faith in Christ…
What is the fruit of a man telling women not to preach and teach?
What if all the people pushing and selling Purity Culture in the 2000s put all their energy, time and effort in fighting against sexual abuse and assault in the church?
Not nearly as profitable, but it could have prevented so many lives from being ripped apart.
This comic really, really, really captures an important truth that resonates deeply with me.
He points to the one Christian movement that got everything “right.”
Look at the facts, not your feelings only.
Trauma works to the benefit of the abuser.
The more trauma and abuse the abuser can inflict, the less credible and believable a target of abuse can be perceived.
2/
Complementarianism: God gave men power over women
Jesus: don’t use power, choose selfless love
Complementarianism: power is fine, just be nice
Jesus: power is easy, selfless love is hard
Complementarianism: love is following the rules, rules say men rule
Imagine if there were two churches in your town & you had to pick one.
1. Female pastor, teaches sound doctrine, cares for flock extremely well
2. Male pastor, teaches sound doctrine, arrogant, gets very angry when criticized, lots of study time, little time with flock

Why does abuse happen in the white evangelical church? Because people like Ray Ortund write things like this.
“they claim they have been hurt. But no one, however wounded, has the right to disrupt the blood-bought peace of a church.”

Good faith question — looking for help!
When you are leaving Conservative spaces and looking for a Justice-Minded church..
How do you respond when people say…
“There’s no perfect church, just join one because you need to be with other believers.”
I don’t want to compromise.
Shortest description of Complementarianism vs Egalitarianism?
Comps - gender hierarchy before the fall
Egals - gender hierarchy is a consequence of the fall
Can you do better?
(Inspired by Kevin Giles)
Found it! His grandmother, Bessie Dillingham, was indeed an ordained minister, and it looks like his grandmother Alice McCluskey was too.

Those of us that follow Jesus are on a journey, right?
Should our beliefs and understanding of the Bible and doctrines shift and grow?
If they haven’t in 20, 30, 40, 50 years — is it really a journey or is it a parking lot?

Much of American Evangelicalism:
Being wealthy is a sign of God’s blessing.
Being poor is a sign that you need to work harder.
Working hard will keep you from being poor.

How wealthy was Jesus again?
This really makes me angry.
You toss around the Southern Presbyterian Biblical arguments for why human chattel slavery was not inherently sinful.
You expect a black man to engage in a pleasant, intellectual discussion.
🤦🏻♂️
Why do so many conservative evangelicals teach theology that literally harms people?
Simple, because they believe that they think they are pleasing God by doing what the Bible says.
Let’s talk about how complementarians read the Bible.

A Twitter story:

Do we try to decide day-by-day whether to love our children depending on whether they make us happy or obey our rules or tell us how crazy amazing we are?
NO
We just love.
If you’re absolutely certain God hates women preaching…
But you’re not sure if God hates race-based human slavery..
You unknowingly may have inherited the theology of an 1860 Southern Enslaver.
There’s all this talk about people leaving church so they can sin.
What I see in history is people STAYING IN church to “sanctify” their ongoing harm to others (sin) by saying the Bible says so.
Al Mohler, March 2016 on evangelicals falling for the spell of Donald Trump:
“We are now seeing the humbling of evangelicalism in America. Let’s assume that God’s doing this in order that we are to learn from it.”
Here’s the full quote:

It’s all the religion of the slave holder. Use those under your privilege to amass wealth and power and wrap it in language of care and protection.
Love is absent.
This 1997 meeting called by James Dobson fascinates me. He and these guys met because World magazine broke the news about a secret TNIV version that made gender changes in their translation.

Providentially we found a small church 3 weeks ago.
We are allowed to have our own opinions.
We are allowed to feel any feelings.
We are allowed to share how we actually feel and think.
We are in shock.

You know what is driving me nuts lately?
Listening to guys in harmful systems say that it's not the doctrine, it's the sinful people.
How long will it take to realize that harmful doctrine creates harmful outcomes?

Did I read it 100 years ago? No! I didn’t mean it literally.
Who gets to decide what the Biblical author intended - literal or figurative?
Who knows for sure?
This is the problem with hard inerrancy.
Jesus didn’t come to earth to

So many defend complementarianism by saying they aren’t bad like the worst versions, but all versions keep women from equal power with men.
Power creates self-deception. This system has no way of correcting since women can’t influence it!

So many of us were jolted to the reality of the brokenness of US evangelicalism in 2016 and 2020.

I was taught that Jesus’s healing miracles were:
1) to prove His divinity
2) the show spiritual realities via physical (blind spiritually, etc)

Wow, quite an impact the theology and teaching has on all of us.
Maybe instead of teaching techniques to manage the “crushing guilt,” the foundational ideas around shaming people could be changed??
