📚I’m writing a book📚
In the last 25 years, 40 million Americans have walked away from church. Most of these folks are not rejecting Jesus. They are rejecting the use of Jesus’ name for the purpose of domination and oppression. They aren’t even rejecting the Bible. They are…
Elephants are born weighing 250 lbs.
They are the biggest babies on earth except for the people mad at Taylor Swift for being excited at a football game.
“A lot of pastors have to encourage women to stay with abusive husbands because if they taught women how to recognize abuse and leave it, women would be leaving their churches too.” Mandy Nicole
Let me get this straight, “guns don’t kill people” but…
- Target merchandise makes you gay
- Bud Light makes you trans
- history books make you Marxist
Is that right?
These headlines are two days apart.
On Wednesday, a pastor and mayor in Alabama was outed for secretly dressing in drag. The condemnation was swift and severe.
Today, he took his own life.
Anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric has deadly consequences. Please join me in praying for his family.
What’s your funniest purity culture story?
Mine’s when my parents secretly installed Covenant Eyes on our computer. A week later, they confronted me about my “p*rn addiction.”
I swore I wasn’t, so they showed me my “explicit searches.”
It had one entry: “the barenaked ladies”
Bible verses about being trans: 0
Bible verses about homosexuality: 6
Bible verses about promoting peace: 429
Bible verses about loving God & others: 714
Bible verses about caring for the poor: 2000+
As a Christian pastor, I unequivocally condemn Donald Trump using Holy Week to peddle “God Bless the USA” Bibles in order to pay jury-awarded damages to a woman he’s been found guilty of sexually assaulting.
👆🏻 I cannot believe that’s a sentence which needs to be written.
I met my first love in a 6th grade English class.
I was so disruptive that my teacher moved my desk into the corner of the room and then put a tri-fold gym mat around me so I couldn’t see anything except the wall.
The person closest to me was a girl named Amy...
Do you know the story behind O Holy Night?
If you know me at all, you know that I love Christmas music. My favorite song is O Holy Night.
I’ve loved it since I was a little kid, but I didn’t know the origins of it until a few years ago... and it blew me away.

10 years ago, President Obama wore a tan suit during a press conference and everyone lost their minds. Rep Peter King (R-NY) said, “There's no way any of us can excuse what the president did yesterday.”
Yesterday, former President Trump was convicted of defaming E. Jean Carroll,…
Beware of Christians who literalize the words of Revelation about burning suns and seven-headed dragons, but spiritualize the words of Jesus about helping the poor, oppressed, and marginalized.
She is my guiding light, my intellectual superior, and my best friend.
I've loved her since I was 11 years old and I will never stop.
I love you so much, Amy. Happy Valentine’s Day.
“Biblical marriage is between one man and one woman.”
No it’s not.
“Biblical marriage” is between one man, one woman, and that woman's slave. (Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar)
“Biblical marriage” is between one man and two sisters after he works seven years for each of them. (Jacob,…
When a husband takes care of kids, he isn’t babysitting for his wife, he’s just parenting.
When a husband makes dinner for the family, he isn’t giving his wife a night off, he’s just cooking.
When a husband does laundry, he isn’t doing his wife’s job, he’s just washing clothes.
Them: I can’t believe you allow women to preach at your church.
Me: I don’t.
Them: Oh good. I heard they were preaching, but...
Me: No, you heard right. Women preach at our church a lot, it’s just not me who “allows” it. Jesus does. I just get out of the way and cheer them on.
At a church leadership conference years ago, a pastor stormed up to me, finger-wagging in my face, and said…
“I can’t believe you allow women to pastor and preach at your church!”
“I don’t!” I quickly replied.
He looked confused for a second and then said, “Oh. Well, good. I…
People aren't deconstructing because it's "sexy" or because they're looking for excuses to sin.
They are doing it because the Christians they've encountered and the Christianity they've been handed are so unlike Christ.
a thread 🧵
Christianity in America would radically change if we understood “taking the Lord’s name in vain” as claiming the name of Jesus without doing the work of Jesus, instead of saying “oh my god.”
I know firsthand how damaging purity culture was and I also know it was exponentially worse for girls and LGBTQ+ kids than straight boys like me.
I hope this funny story and others below help our healing process.
If you don’t want to scroll them all, here are some favorites:
I honestly don’t know how I’m supposed to share a country with people who would rather see my little kids gunned down than have their “gun rights” restricted.
This is the result of calling queer people and their allies “groomers” and “pedophiles.”
This is what happens when homophobia and transphobia are mainstreamed.
This is where all the anti-LGBTQ+ legislation leads.
THIS IS WHAT WE’VE BEEN TELLING YOU WILL HAPPEN.
If you’re upset about Critical Race Theory and Intersectionality not being rooted in biblical principles, I have some things to tell you about capitalism and nationalism that you’d better sit down for.
Modesty is an important virtue discussed throughout Scripture, but it has nothing to do with sexuality.
Every time modesty is mentioned in the Bible it refers wealth and materialism.
In order to make biblical modesty about sex, preachers often manipulate passages.
For example:
I really wish the Christians who are celebrating the overturning of Roe could see the anxious and fearful messages I’ve been getting from women in our congregation all day.
Maybe take a break from your online victory laps and listen to people who are really hurting right now.
If anti-LGBTQ+ Christians were as serious about the Bible as they claim to be, they would be a lot more concerned with peace, love, and poverty alleviation than yelling at queer people.
I grew up in white evangelicalism. They taught me that:
- we’re all equal in Christ
- anyone is welcome at church
- we should uplift the oppressed
- every religion deserves freedom
- the words of Jesus must be taken seriously
But when I planted a church centered on these…
To all the men claiming not to know very many women who've been sexually assaulted, I have news for you…
You do.
In fact, the vast majority of women you know have been sexual harassed or assaulted.
They just haven’t told you because they know you’re not a safe person.
Here’s something I wish more Christians understood:
Many people are struggling to align themselves with Christianity, not because they find the core beliefs too outlandish or the ethical demands too arduous, but because most of the Christians they encounter are so unlike Christ.
I’m not against addressing mental health issues.
I’m against scapegoating mental health issues in order to justify not taking steps toward common-sense gun control.
We can do both.
I believe homophobia and transphobia are two of the greatest evils facing American Christianity today.
But here's the thing... NONE of it is rooted in Jesus or the Bible. It’s rooted in societal change.
In other words, anti-LGBTQ+ people are caving to culture.

Both of these men claim to be Christians.
THIS IS WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT.
I can think of very few things as evil as bullying God’s beloved children until they feel like suicide is the best option and then responding to their death like this.
1.8 million LGBTQ+ youth consider suicide each year and 1 attempts suicide every 45 seconds. Trans youth are 2.5x more likely to attempt suicide.
But having just one accepting adult reduces suicide for LGBTQ+ youth by 40%.
Trans kids will die because of this toxic garbage from…
I was hungry, but you took free lunch out of schools.
I was thirsty, but you made me drink contaminated water.
I was a stranger, but you watched me and my children drown underneath your razor-wire buoys.
I was sick, but you cut my healthcare coverage.
I was in prison, but…
Them: I can’t believe you allow women to preach and pastor.
Me: I don’t.
Them: Oh good. I heard they were, but...
Me: No, you heard right. Women preach and pastor at our church, it’s just not me who “allows” it. Jesus does. All I do is get out of the way and cheer them on.
When I was a kid, my church taught me that Christians should always help people in need, that Jesus loves absolutely everyone and that we should too.
But when I grew up and planted a church based on those values, those same people said I was woke and disowned me.
You cannot say the baby in the manger was a gift while saying a baby on welfare is a burden.
You cannot praise the family who fled political violence into Egypt while condemning a family who flees political violence into America.
You cannot worship the Jesus who said he came to…
There is so much more to the rest of the story, but the short version is this:
- We started dating a few weeks later.
- Got married when we were 21.
- Had our first child when we were 25.
- Planted

when we were 26.
- And we'll have been married 14 years this May.
The vast majority of people walking away from Christianity in America are not rejecting the person and work of Jesus.
They are rejecting faulty biblical interpretations that lead to bigotry, oppression, and marginalization.
This rejection isn't unchristian.
It is Christlike.
One time a pastor told me it makes him really mad when I call out churches that subjugate women and uphold white supremacy.
“You’re basically saying we’re all Westboro Baptist!”
My brother in Christ, if you feel comparable to Westboro or the Duggars, maybe you are the problem.
I don’t want America to be a Christian nation.
Christian Nationalism is toxic and abusive, and nations can’t be Christian anyway.
I just want Christians in America to live and love like Jesus.
I just can’t imagine a scenario where we get to heaven and Jesus says…
“You loved people too much.”
“You showed people grace too often.”
“You included too many people in the Church.”
“You spent too much time helping the poor, marginalized and oppressed.”
If every time I condemn homophobia and transphobia you assume I’m condemning Christians, that tells me everything I need to know about your version of “Christianity.”
My uncle is oscillating between tweets about how much he hates Taylor Swift and how much he wants Texas to secede.
Man, if you can’t handle seeing T Swift for 2 minutes during a 4 hour NFL game, I’m not sure you’re ready to take up arms against the federal government.
@DothanDave
I am not demonizing God’s people. This man was one of God’s children and he deserved so much better than the hate people like you poured out on him.
In the year 125AD, a Greek philosopher named Aristides attempted to explain Christianity to Roman Emperor Hadrian. Here’s how he described these early Christians…
“They love one another. They never fail to help widows. They save orphans from those who would hurt them. If they…
I grew up in white evangelicalism. They taught me that:
- we’re all equal in Christ
- anyone is welcome at church
- we should uplift the oppressed
- every religion deserves freedom
But when I practiced these values in our church, they called me a liberal and kicked me out.
All these “anti-CRT” lawmakers tweeting MLK Jr. quotes after they made it illegal to read Dr. King in public school classrooms is a level of duplicity I didn’t think possible.
Today I met with a woman whose son came out a few years ago. At the time, she was deeply invested in an evangelical church who told her she had to choose between God and her gay son.
After praying and wrestling for weeks, she told God, “I love you, but I choose my son.”
Hot take on the He Gets Us ad from the Super Bowl:

“You loved too much.”
“You showed mercy too often.”
“You welcomed too many people into the Church.”
“You spent too much time pursuing justice on behalf of the poor, marginalized and oppressed.”
I loved so many things about Ted Lasso, but the Roy Kent/Jamie Tartt relationship arc is my very favorite.
I’ll never forget this scene from Season 2.
Our world would be a whole lot better off if men were vulnerable enough to love and be loved like this.
7 year old: Can we play soccer in the morning?
me: No. Sorry, bud. I’m preaching at church.
him: Why don’t you get someone else to do it?
me: It’s a little late notice.
him: Just tell them to go up there, make a joke, read the Bible, and cry a little bit. That’s all you do.
I believe:
- in the incarnation and resurrection of Jesus
- Scripture is inspired by God
- the Apostles’ Creed is true
I also believe:
- Black Lives Matter
- LGBTQ+ folks should be affirmed
- God desires justice and flourishing for all
And I’m not alone. There are tons of us.
I met my first love in a 6th grade English class.
I was so disruptive that my teacher moved my desk into the corner of the room and then put a tri-fold gym mat around me so I couldn’t see anything except the wall.

So when you have a few minutes this Christmas season, put on O Holy Night (a version that includes verse 3) and spend time reflecting on what it means to truly follow Jesus.
We need it now more than ever.
@AndrewKsay
Great verse!
Did you know 1.8 million LGBTQ+ youth seriously consider suicide each year and at least 1 attempts suicide every 45 seconds?
But acceptance and support from just one adult decreases the risk of suicide by 40%.
This is how we love the "little ones" among us.
Jesus didn't kill his enemies. In fact, he prayed for them as they killed him.
If your version of Christianity includes violence against those who believe differently, then I sincerely doubt you have ever truly encountered Jesus.
If God inspired the Bible and it has multiple books (Psalms, Habakkuk, etc.) filled with people questioning God, then maybe questioning God isn’t sinful.
Maybe authentically voicing our questions/doubts is exactly what God wants us to do.
Maybe God is big enough to handle it.
The only clear line I draw these days is this:
When my religion tries to come between me and my neighbor, I will choose my neighbor.
Jesus never commanded me to love my religion.
- Barbara Brown Taylor
God is not asking you to choose between loving and supporting your LGBTQ+ kids and following him.
And any church or pastor who tells you to abandon your queer child in the name of God has completely forsaken the way of Jesus.
“Taking the Lord’s name in vain” isn’t about saying “oh my god” when you’re frustrated.
It’s about using the name of Jesus to justify oppression, marginalization and violence.
It’s about calling yourself a Christian without doing the work of Christ—justice, liberation and love.
Modesty is an important virtue discussed throughout Scripture, but it has nothing to do with sexuality.
Anytime modesty is mentioned in the Bible, it’s about wealth and materialism.
To make biblical modesty about sex, preachers often manipulate passages.
For example:
The target is not Christians, it’s Christian nationalism.
It’s not white people, it’s white supremacy.
It’s not heterosexuals, it’s homophobia.
It’s not men, it’s patriarchy.
So don’t take it personally; join the work and dismantle the oppressive systems.

@CarlosHappyNPO
Men telling women they aren’t allowed to preach the Gospel when Scripture says that Jesus purposefully chose a woman (Mary Magdalene) to be the very first Gospel preacher clearly demonstrates that patriarchy has always been power, not biblical faithfulness.
Just found out that my 9-year-old is already an activist and organizer.
His school is hiring a new 3rd grade teacher because the other classes are over capacity, so they plan to take a handful of kids from each of the other 3rd grade classes to make the new one.
My son’s class…
If your preferred version of the Bible includes the US Constitution and the Pledge of Allegiance, but ignores the biblical commands to sacrificially support the oppressed and marginalized, then you are worshipping America, not Jesus.
Side note: It was 37 office referrals and over 100 lunch detentions in case you were wondering. According to my sources at the middle school, no one has ever come close to to those numbers.
I'm the Wayne Gretzky of middle school troublemakers. No one is catching that record.
Beware of Christians who literalize the words of Revelation about burning suns and seven-headed dragons, but spiritualize the words of Jesus about helping the poor, oppressed, and marginalized.
If you didn’t speak up for George, Breonna and Ahmaud…
If you stayed quiet about Keenan, Trayvon, Kalief, Alton, Stephon, Tamir, Sandra, Elijah, Botham, Jordan, Philando and so many more…
Then please don’t quote Dr. King this weekend.
Actually read and listen to him instead.
I’m going to prioritize love.
Above doctrine and dogma.
Above theology and ideology.
I’m going to prioritize love.
Because Jesus didn’t say his followers would be known by their beliefs.
He said we would be known by our love.
Churches who say “everyone is welcome!” but have invisible restrictions on women and LGBTQ+ folks (baptism, membership, marriage, leadership, etc.) are actually much more damaging than churches who are up front about their exclusion.
- Alone with the Samaritan woman at the well.
- Alone with the woman caught in adultery after her accusers leave.
- Alone with Mary Magdalene outside the tomb.
Jesus was really bad at following the Billy Graham rule.
“I’d been in the presence of God. I was certain of it.”
This was such a powerful part of Matthew Perry’s memoir about faith and addiction. I’m going to miss him.

Which says:
Truly He taught us to love one another
His law is Love and His gospel is Peace
Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother
And in his name all oppression shall cease
I can think of very few things God hates more than casually preying upon vulnerable folks to make a political statement.
Immigrants are human beings, made in the image of God, who deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, especially by people claiming to be Christians.
