So half of the Bollards in East Oxford have been ripped out, and people have taken power tools to the planters to try and remove them. I am absolutely fed up with a culture that demands we drive everywhere and encourages vandalism to maintain this.
Cycle lanes are like railway lines... They shift people efficiently and quickly at high volume in a small space. This is why they look empty ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
On the other thread it has been suggested that either a) As the a local councillor I do something to ensure people have adequate parking and b) talk to people to see if they have driveway parking. ๐คท. No there are moral absolutes, not obstructing wheelchair users is one of them!
I was elected to deliver a Low Traffic Neighbourhood in "my" division. Today that dream became a reality, the decision to progress has been signed off. Well done to all who were on this journey with us. It will deliver for all, residents and businesses.
Well done for admitting it
@GeorgeMonbiot
. This particular line is very true... "Letโs face it, if wood burning were mostly a working class habit, it would probably have been banned already."
Why is the UK so wedded to the car?! The conversations I experienced on the
#labourdoorstep
today were quite astonishing. Must, need to drive 500m.
#SoTired
So frustrating that we continue to talk about the fishing industry... it's as if it is one of the largest industries in the UK. Teaching English has more economic benefit to the UK than fish!
#Panorama
No everyone LTNs do not make pollution/traffic worse, people refusing to alter their habits and continue to drive <1mile unnecessarily make things worse. You all know this! Grow up and be honest with yourselves.
Chewing the fat with a motorist neighbour. He drives everywhere. He suddenly says, "you have an electric bicycle, may I have go?". Of course I say. He takes it for a spin, comes back, and says, quote: "That's a game changer!".
We're breaking through ๐ช๐ฒ
Warneford Lane 9am. This is what happens when residents elect an administration that is serious about providing safe active travel infrastructure. Well done to all the team for getting this done.

I am disgusted by councillors in my own group attacking other councillors (from any party) regarding their actions to reduce their car use. This is everyone's problem and if we can travel by alternative means we should,hereby reducing congestion for those who need to drive.
To register a car in Japan, prospective owners need to obtain a "garage certificate" from local police to prove that they have access to an off-street parking space. Now, where is the world's largest motor manufacturer based ๐ค?
Just returned from the cycling round trip. Horrific traffic on the High and the centre of Oxford. We are an attractive, international, welcoming city, why do we accept the dominance of the car. Every other equivalent European city is combating this. We must do better!
Today. Shocking ๐คฏ. 30 years ago we hardly saw any pavement parking, now it is ubiquitous. This is an extension of that selfish behaviour, which isn't admonished by society or authorities due to said attitudes and cultures and a lack of enforcement, money, and legal authority.
Low traffic cities are the future quite simply. We have no choice. There isn't any debate here. The debate is how we get there and where does the investment come from.
Britain 2022 a story. A flood at a mini roundabout, I stopped, went home, collected wellies and returned. I removed the leaves from the drain. 25+ motorists passed, Inc. 2 buses, not one thank you, but worse several didn't slow down. I was soaked. Astonishing.
When was
#pavementparking
normalised? Is it just an extension of our neoliberal society becoming increasingly selfish?
I couldn't imagine any of my parents'generation thinking it would be acceptable to park like this...
"My" division is about to get the LTNs it so desperately needs. Years of painstaking work, involving both councils, councillors and concerned residents has paid off. The neighborhood will be safer, cleaner and greener. A wonderful
#PublicHealth
intervention...
After the abuse I have received since my last tweet I m restricting my tweets. This is a real shame, I am for open, honest and polite discussion, however I now need to protect myself and my family.
No, this is regressive. Irrespective of the pollution and climate issue, the lowest paid workers in the NHS are much more likely to us public transport, this should be subsidised, not motorists.
Just had the most lovely experience on Magdalen Road. A chap walked up to me with his child in tow and asked:
"are you Damian Haywood?"
"Yes", I replied, thinking the worst.
"Thank you" was his simple message as they walked on.
This is why we do what we do!
#EastOxfordLTNs
ยฃ500k well spent. Oxford thrives on the tourist industry. Enhancing this space will lead to increased footfall which will encourage a vibrant centre and the spend that comes with it.
The government could learn from this, investment leads to growth.
I am suffering with my mental health presently. I have taken advice and I am speaking to mental health professionals tomorrow. There are many professionals out there to help us. The first step is to recognise there is a problem and to seek that help...
Heading to my aunt's birthday party in B'ham. Train & bus for two: ยฃ110+ door to door 3hrs. Car drive 1hr15mins. We have to make public transport simpler and cheaper.
Here is the result of the Cowley Ltns disaster. One resident sent me this picture of their wall knocked down by someone trying to reverse because of the planters.
Especially after the advice of emergency services Oxfordshire county council endangering people's lives.
Please do not block the pavement. Yes we need secure in road solutions to bicycle storage (we are working on this), but in the meantime don't do this...
Hi
@Maylarch
very disappointing to see this this morning. This is a busy route for cyclists. Also when asked to move by members of the public they were laughed at and the driver refused.
@OxfordCity
these are your contractors.
Completely agree with
@OwenJones84
here, ruined really? Confetti not paint! Compared to the thousands of lives and the amount of misery caused by his policies, these two issues are nowhere near similar.
'Genuinely, do you think it [the wedding] was ruined by some orange confetti?'

Why are local Tories so against public health measures:
-20mph
-Active travel
-Safe streets outside schools.
They should be supportive because these initiatives save the tax payer money. A healthier society is a wealthier one.
At full
@OxfordshireCC
council tomorrow we have a Tory motion asking for the removal of LTNs.
I am receiving approx 10 emails against the motion to every one for.
There is a clear yet silent majority who prefer quieter, safer and cleaner streets.
Why do we have to fight so hard to get even the slightest bit of safe cycling infrastructure? It is so illogical. All councils should start with this question, how can we do this in a cleaner, greener and healthier manner? It is always going to be cost effective.
We have fixed the Howard street planter that someone tried to take apart overnight. And will do so every day if necessary. Give the trial a chance. Not cool.
A human being died yesterday in an horrific manner, an awful tragic loss of life. But the comments on this story in social media are beyond belief and the pale. Astonishing hatred of those who choose to cycle and protect society for all of us.
Hey
@metoffice
with this morning's temperature of -10โฐC and the 40โฐC in the summer, is this the greatest temperature differential in a calendar year?
I do despair, this is a newly elected
@UKLabour
mayor wishing to rip out active travel infrastructure at significant cost. Active travel reduces inequalities
@borolabour
, do better!
I am astonished at how many socialists are calling us out because we marched yesterday. Stating that we are somehow ignoring our commitment in reducing poverty, inequality, homelessness etc. It is for these reasons that we march, opportunity, stability & international socialism.
@sixteenthCgirl
Or... "Oxford introduces traffic filters to reduce the congestion caused by too many cars on a street plan that is hundreds of years old."
This evening we cycled the entire length of the Iffley Road
#Quickway
. What a dream, simply due to the absence of parked cars. It is a start, we are planning much bigger and bolder measures to make Oxford true to that moniker "A Cycling City".
So that's it, my job is done. Matias (
@HaywoodMatias
) is officially an adult! Happy 18th Birthday to the most lovely, happy and inspirational young man. Love you loads son xxx
Surely the biggest and best argument for a low traffic neighbourhood is the one that goes: new developments would never be planned with significant high traffic flow through. So why do we accept it in neighbourhoods that were designed before the motorcar?!
I can only assume that those who have commented that they need to drive because buses are slow and infrequent will all jump back on them when we implement bus prioritisation?
This is really good, trees are really good. But why do councils always remove pedestrian space, rather than vehicle space, to locate them? (I know the answer btw, I am being sarcastic and rhetorical).
I am starting to get really annoyed with this lack of consultation nonsense re traffic measures. Councils are elected. The consultation is at the ballot box!
Been in Brum for a couple of hours, what they are doing to reduce cars in the city is brilliant. It is much more peaceful, clean and safe than the Brum of my youth. Well done

Remember, Paris wasnโt โalways this way.โ
It wasnโt even this way in late 2019 when I was there last.
Just a few years ago, Paris was choking in car traffic.
This is new. This is leadership.

It is fundamentally wrong that a city with the second largest proportion of daily commutes by bicycle in the UK doesn't have adequate cycling infrastructure, good to know we are are now doing something about this.

Why would someone so insanely rich want to reduce their tax bill? What is the benefit to them, how does it change his life? I do not understand the motive or ideology of those who are so wealthy.

The figures are staggering for the proposed development on the Harrow Tesco site:
559 new flats across 10 blocks up to 15-storeys high, 155 residential parking spaces, a 20% smaller Tesco store & 1/3 less customer parking

I have received a bit of criticism for this tweet. (Can't criticise cyclists ๐). The reason I posted it is that I have many in the cycling community follow me. I could have posted several pictures of cars doing the same thing yesterday, but that would have influenced no-one.
Please do not block the pavement. Yes we need secure in road solutions to bicycle storage (we are working on this), but in the meantime don't do this...
In the 70s working 7 days a week down t'pit my dad grew veg and kept chickens in our garden. That was our foodbank. My dad voted Tory for the 1st time in 2019. He will again at the next election. A great man. Comments turned off to send the left in to meltdown. But u can like ๐
Itโs been over 5 years that Hammersmith Bridge has been closed.
I have been campaigning for its reopening consistently.
Meanwhile the Tories only come out at local or mayoral election time, pretending their dither, delay and inaction isnโt the reason repair costs are soaringโฆ
Cities are changing. Around the world they are waking up to the realisation that cars must not be the primary or even secondary modes of transport within. As soon as everyone accepts this and adapts the rewards will come. Time to get on board or get out of our way.
The following are a few words which have been used to describe me regarding my OM piece...
Disgusting
Nasty
Self-centred
Exploitive
Condescending
Patronising
Racist??!!

Where does the hatred come from?!
This is far the biggest issue I have in "my" division. My son is in a wheelchair, you can imagine the difficulties we have. We need national law change. We get this by completing this consultation and selecting Option 3
#BanPavementParking
Ok, I'll bite, and I will do it with evidence. Risk and harm evidence... LTNs lead to a reduction in street crime, especially violent crime...
Furthermore, fewer cars lead to a significant reduction in harm associated with motor vehicle incidents.
Labourโs LTNs create empty streets. These are a perfect breeding ground for crime & anti-social behaviour.
Donโt let Labour Cllrs sacrifice your safety, vote Conservative in the Tottenham Hale by-election.

Very disappointed to see so many local Labour Cllrs yesterday actively campaigning against public health measures I and other Labour Cllrs have worked so hard for over the last 3 years. You may not agree, I've heard you, but be supportive of your comrades, or just say nothing.
โA transport and environment policy that has any chance of succeeding to improve air quality and protecting the environment must also be rooted in tackling inequalities and improving the lives of the most disadvantaged in our city.โ

I am so pleased with this. Not only because I am in

(which is pretty cool tbh), but also if I have helped even make one person think they can change their behaviour and give up the car, that is a win!
Brum fully pedestrianised city centre, has been for approx 20yrs. Busy, lively, safe and happy. New St was hellish 20yrs ago, why can't we do this to High St Oxford. (Photo 9am Sunday so quiet).

Ok, so she shut down what was the only link from the Uk across to the States at the time . She shut it down instead switching across to resilient services. The whole thing went tits up for 3 hours.
Today was a good day for Oxford, but we still have a long way to go. I would hope that due to the majority of England currently melting at 40C, more councillors from all parties would see the need for us to go much further and faster on restricting car use in our city.
It takes courage, bravery and conviction to make a stand, a difference, especially against the onslaught of abuse and vitriol. I am very proud to be a member of this

For those at the back. You see that water out there, that is a direct result of us doing very little about climate change over the last 50 years.
It will only become worse.
Concerning development overnight. Bollards have destroyed by fire. This goes beyond vandalism to arson. The consequences of which are evidently more serious. Please call

Five, Four, Five!
These are the ages of three of the children killed in motor incidents over the weekend.
We need to act now to halt the endemic killing of our children. If this was anything but motor vehicles we would have spent millions to fix it.
We are all complicit.
The notion that everything was harmonious in East Oxford prior to the installation of the LTNs is nonsense, people have been fighting for safer, cleaner and quieter streets for years, but doing so without threats or violence.
