My kids primary school has gone quietly vegetarian 2 days a week. This means that just 3 of the 15 weekly main meal options now contain meat or fish. Many vegan options. No complaints from parents, they have been doing it nearly a year. Institutions can drive important changes.

A Friday pic of BeyoncΓ© on a bike (there are loads!). She loves cycling: β€œIt’s amazing how I’m able to ride around on a bike. People kind of see me but since I’m on a bike, they think, β€˜No, it’s not her.’ And by the time they realize it’s me, I’m already gone.”

This machine at Paddington is to taps what flying cars are to bicycles: a significantly more expensive, techy, yet rubbish solution. Takes 8 clicks, 3x as long, and you can’t half fill a water bottle - only does 500ml so overflows. Taps: working brilliantly since Roman times.

The active travel shift we’ve seen in the last 2 years at my primary school since LTNs has been incredible. This is just the YR and Y1 bikes which kids cycle themselves to the school on. There are also tons of cargo bikes, trailers, bike seats AND many kids walk. #LTN

I’m following Tower Hamlets because it’s one of the very few places ripping out safer streets. I just saw that the ENTIRE CABINET IS MALE?!!! Is this even allowed? Aligns with my view that safe streets are a gender issue: men drive, women and kids die (1/3)

The East Oxford LTNs are going in tomorrow. Few worthwhile things are easy, but to transform our streets we need to shift away from cars. This trial is one of the building blocks in a vision which will make Oxford a much more liveable city with better busses & cycling. 🧡πŸͺ‘🧡

Just had a conversation with a lady unlocking her Tern GSD. "I was opposed to the LTNs before they came in but now I love them. I couldn't see how we'd get around, I used my car daily to get 2 kids to school and nursery. Now I use the bike instead and I hardly ever use the car"

This is devastating. We do not talk enough about the huge number of injuries caused on the roads: it isn’t just deaths which are the issue. I recently read that 1,200 children PER MONTH are injured by car drivers on the school run. We need safer streets.

Breaking: Minister for local govt @Lee4NED has ordered South Cambs council to stop its pilot 4 day week despite actual data and Cam Uni research showing it is working. Anyone else bored of the Tories starting culture wars vs following evidence? #GTTO #4dayweek

And men on dangerous forms of transport (HGVs, LGVs, motorbikes) talking about how safety was every road user’s individual responsibility. Which concerned me: I believe that with power comes responsibility, ie if you drive dangerous vehicles you need to take care of others. (2/3)

Such a fun ride on the back of a long tail bike. Visited great friends and one of them gave me a lift home through West London. This wouldn’t have been possible 7 yes ago when I lived here. C9 rocks! Let’s normalise adults riding as passengers on cargo bikes.

β€œGo on then, show us those school cycle racks in February.” From this morning. Kids love cycling to school, my school is surrounded by low and no traffic roads, so kids cycle (and lots walk and run and scoot too!). Oxford has the UK’s no.1 cycling school, at 58%. SAFE INFRA!

Why is Utrecht such a great city for cyclists? Some thoughts. First, it’s foremost a great city for pedestrians. The city centre is full of shops (and all the huge chains, Zara. H&M Home et al) and we only saw one car - a police car. All deliveries before 7am. No kerbs. (1/5)

Anyone in Oxford want one of these? I’ve got four spare. They’re pretty big, A1 I think. Can put them on school railings (with permission) with cable ties, very easy.

As we stood there, an awful lot of new Β£50k+ SUVs with one occupant drove past. These are not local people, they are definitely not doing minimum wage jobs. Less than 50% of houses in this area own a car, we need to stop dangerous vehicles speeding through.

This reflects what I hear all the time - people like LTNs but are scared to say so because of the aggression of a minority. It explains why polls consistently show most people in favour, which genuinely surprises Antis because they’ve intimidated most supporters into silence.

β€œI’m a woman in my 50s. I live in the Bounds Green LTN, and love it. I really love it. The streets are returning to people. It’s quiet, it’s safer, and there’s less pollution. I consider myself lucky to be alive after nearly being hit by a driver last year on the road that I /1

Oh I nearly forgot - or you can jump into my comments and deny climate change, and go on about how individual actions don't make any difference, and make spiteful comments. That'll be really helpful for future generations and I'm sure it will make your family and friends proud.πŸ’–

Hey Twitter, what’s another example of an older technology which works really well and arguably better than an over-engineered replacement? I am thinking bicycles and taps at the moment and looking for a third.

Anyone else think that Wimbledon’s sponsorship by Land Rover is the most problematic since Shell’s sponsorship of the Science Museum? I might be missing other bad ones but this strikes me as pretty awful.

@the_LTA We’ve just been told that London will be unsuitable as a sporting host due to poor air quality, partly driven by your sponsor @LandRover_UK . Added to the extra risk of child death due to 4x4s, do you really think the sponsorship is a good look?

I'd like to share something innovative Oxfordshire is doing on 20mph because I realised on Sat that many other councils hadn't heard of it. The County is allowing local communities to apply for their own 20mph. So far, 270 of 310 (87%) have done so. (1/5)

This is incredibly sad, she lived in my ward and was much-loved. A stark reminder that with power must come responsibility: car drivers must take care around cyclists, and cyclists must take care of pedestrians. The towpath should be slow cycling only.

The day after the PM decides to focus on dismantling local councils’ ability to deliver safe streets (rather than focusing on the economy or NHS), a BMW 4x4 crashes into a bus stop near an Oxford school.

This has hugely improved drivers experience too (less clashing of cars on narrow streets). Parents in cars can drop kids at top of hill and they walk down with siblings, or the staff have walkie talkies - there’s someone at the bottom of the hill too. 3/3

Awesome article in today’s OM on all the businesses in Oxford switching to e-bikes to get their staff around the city. Estate agents, caring firms, midwives. It’s no longer just delivery logistics: this is now the practical solution for many. Great piece @rail_guns πŸ’–πŸš²πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ
